"Honey, get down, quick, you're going to be late. It's your first day."
Skye rolled her eyes at her mothers comment and trudged tiredly down the oak stairs, her bag slung on her right shoulder.
"I'm half an hour early. The bus doesn't get here until half seven." She said tiredly.
Skye's mum grinned back at her, noticing the stain on her chin, and licking her finger to rub it off.
"I know. I've just always wanted to say that."
They chuckled.
"You have everything you need?"
She asked, packing a lunch box into her bag and shoving a $10 note into her pocket.
"Yes mum."
"Bus pass?" She asked.
"Yes."
"Pencil case?
"Yes."She replied.
"Locker key?"
"Yes!"
"PE kit?"
"Ma, yes! God! I have everything I need, okay? I'm going now, bye."
Skye pecked her mum's cheek and walked out of the door, shutting it loudly behind her. A few seconds later a knock came. Skye's mum answered it.
"I forgot my-"
Skye's mum stood behind the door holding her keys up. They grinned as Skye took the keys, once again pecking her mother's cheek and leading out the front door.
Skye walked cheerfully down the road until she saw the bus stop, Her feet immediately stopped as she stood, shocked. Around 50 odd kids, mostly older than her, stood around the crowded seats. Skye gulped nervously and gripped her backpack, walking forward to wait in-line.
"First day?"
An older boy nudged her. He had dark hair and a pale skin-tone. She nodded. He smiled.
"Don't worry. It's not that scary. You'll fit right in."
She smiled. His words gave her confidence, even if it was just a little. A yellow school bus pulled up, and everyone filed in, pushing and shoving. Skye walked up the steps, and was greeted first by an old, bold man at the front of the wheel who smiled and lifted his hat up to her. Skye smiled and as she looked around at the people on the bus. Towards the back, girls and guys alike chattered loudly. Skye felt something brush against her backpack. She turned round to see that a girl with headphones plugged into her ears, was staring at her.
"Sorry, I just love your backpack."
Skye turned her head to look at her backpack. She had bought it online on amazon, after it drew her in by the rainbow printed on it. Skye always loved rainbows. Her grandfather used to take her rainbow hunting every Sunday. They would drive around to see if they could spot any. Skye thought he was crazy, though she still loved him with all her heart.
"Oh thanks."
The tanned, blue, dyed-haired girl smiled sadly.
"Sure."
"Skye!"
Skye turned her head towards the back of the bus, to see Abby, her friend from her old school. She looked back at the blue-haired girl before another shout of her name broke the trance, forcing her to give a small smile, and move to the back.
"So, how's your family settling in here?"
Abby asked as Skye sat in the seat next to her.
"Mine's doing so well. We've already unpacked all of our things." Abby added.
Abby and Skye had moved to America. Their families had decided to move after a series of events occurred that had forced them to move. But Abby's voice soon drowned out, as did the chattering of the bus as Skye's attention focused on the boy who talked to her at the bus-stop. He sat next to the blue-haired girl and pecked her lips. 'They must be in a relationship' she thought.
"Hello? I said, 'what about you?'"
Abby asked, waving a hand in front of Skye's face.
"Sorry."
She shook her head.
"Yeah, we're doing great." Sky replied.
Skye smiled as Abby continued talking about her boyfriend and how the long distance was going. Skye was hardly listening though. Her eyes were still fixed on the girl at the front of the bus.
