In the beginning a man of unknown origins, stands at the edge of a skyscraper with his legs straight and together standing tall, his arms outspread like a bird flying through the air, and of course mostly naked in nothing but his boxers “How did I end up practically naked on top of a skyscraper? Guess you’ll have to read to find out.” the man winks and falls from the top of the skyscraper as the story begins.
This is the day it all began, September 6 2017.
It was the beginning of the new school year and as per usual the day began with going to our scheduled homerooms to collect our schedules that we'd have to memorize for the the rest of the year. Then off to the auditorium where they give a big long meaningless speech about the school for all the new students, and for us older students they just inform us about everything that is and is not new in the school this year.
As we all gather into the bleachers some of us are forced to sit in chairs down on the auditorium floor, “Yo, Abe!” I hear a familiar voice call out my name from behind me right as I’m about to take my seat on the bleachers, seeing how the older years got dismissed first. I sit and turn and see that it’s my best friend Charles, I wave him over and gesture towards the seat beside mine. He takes a seat beside me and we do our usual greetings and talk about our summer and what we did when we weren’t hanging out, it took about the entire assembly.
Charles has been my best friend and really my only friend since grade 2, his parents died when he was three in a car crash so he’s always been bouncing from home to home. Sadly I couldn’t convince my parents to let us adopt him, but he’s always been like a brother to me whether we live together or not.
We plan to move out together after high school but I guess we’ll have to survive this hell hole first. If we can that is. It's hard to survive high school when your best friend is a closeted gay and you are an asexual, half vampire half human child trying to keep it a secret. Secrets don't stay a secret when you're attending a school full of teenagers who want to rip you to shreds.
When the announcer finally handed the mic back over to our principal who after another long speech, said that we were released for lunch and that afterwards we were all expected to attend our first two classes. And that the week following would be us adjusting to our new classes. Luckily me and Charles had exchanged schedules and realized that most, if not all of our classes were the same “awesome!" we said in unison.
"We have all our classes together. Sadly not our homeroom but we don't really go there anyway so it's not a big deal.” I said getting up to head out for lunch, as the bell rang making sure to lightly shove Charles to get him to start moving.
At lunch we head out to our usual spot that's been ours since our first year at this damn school, that was 2 years ago. “Can you believe we graduate this year?” Charles says sitting down and taking a bite of the sandwich I gave him earlier. Since I hate the taste of sandwiches I've always said he can just have the ones my mom makes for me, I'd rather he eat it then the food go to waste.
“Yeah I know. How are we going to live? I mean we've got our scholarships but we don't necessarily have jobs.” I said as I took a seat, rummaging through his bag trying to find the snacks he always buys for me. “True, maybe we should actually sit down and write our resumes and cover letters for once. We've been talking about it since we were 14.” He says and I can barely contain my laughter. “Oh come on! Who the hell is going to hire two teenagers who haven't worked a day in their lives?” I ask, not expecting an answer as I already know his.
“Yeah I know, we really should though. We can't exactly just live off of our scholarship. How will we buy the all that crap that we want?” Charles said taking another bite from the sandwich. “That's true. I can't exactly live off my parents money forever.” I say as I finally pull open the pocket that contains all of my snacks and pop “you know you have to stop hiding my snacks on me. I do pay for them.” I said with a chuckle as I rip open the bag of my favourite classic chips.
