Even though the fair thing for Sooch to do would be to tell the truth, he made it quite clear through his internal monologue at the beginning of the chapter that he simply does not have the capacity to love Howie the way he needs to be loved atm... He really just needs to leave, and not make things any worse than he already has.
That wraps up the chapter! It was kinda rough but if you can make it through this chapter you can make it through the rest of the comic!!
