Liam and I didn’t speak anymore after that. He dropped me off and we went out separate ways for the night. My parents told me in a note that they were at the movies and Kaden was at a sleepover, so I just went straight to sleep. Though sleep didn’t come easily.
I laid in bed for hours before I finally drifted off and then woke up at 7:00a.m. so I could meet Liam. We agreed that Liam would come here at 8:00a.m., just after my parents left for work.
I showered quickly and dressed in baggy burgundy sweater and black tights. Right when I was heating up instant oatmeal, the doorbell chimed.
“Hey.” I greeted Liam after opening the front door.
“Morning.” He smiled and I gestured for him to come inside.
After offering something to drink or eat, both of which he declined, I grabbed my oatmeal and sat with him on the couch in the living room.
“Why do you think they wanted to dissect me?” I blurted out, surprising myself and Liam as he visibly jolted.
“I – I don’t know.” He said, weakly, “Maybe we saw it wrong?”
“I highly doubt that. We both saw the room and heard Greg.” I protested.
“I know. This is just getting really intense.” He said and I nodded.
“It is, but we have to get to the bottom of it. Did that Greg guy look familiar to you?” I asked, finishing off my oatmeal.
“Not at all.” He responded.
“Same here, but his way of speaking reminded me of the person who’s been calling me.” I told him.
“That’s good, then. We have one pretty solid answer.” He smiled.
“Not for sure, though.” I reminded him.
“Yeah.” He gripped his hands tightly before asking, “Are we going to talk about, well, you?”
“I don’t know what any of that was.” I said, a shiver running down my spine as I remembered the way my eyes looked.
“I know, but it was weird and absolutely terrifying.” He said.
“Greg did say we weren’t human.” I suggested as an explanation and Liam roughly shook his head.
“No. No, I don’t buy that. You and I are human, Charlotte. We would know if we weren’t.” He stated.
“But, we do things that aren’t normal! You can see the future and I loose my memories.” I protested.
“That doesn’t automatically make us another species!” Liam countered.
“I suppose so.” I said, then thinking more about what Greg said, “He said friends! Plural.”
“So there are more of us?” Liam asked.
“I don’t know, maybe. Greg seems to think so.” I said.
“Right, so you think these other ‘friends’ might have abilities too?” Liam questioned.
“They might, the way Greg said it seemed to imply that.” I said and Liam didn’t look entirely convinced.
“Well, my ability is to seem glimpses of the future, and yours is to loose your memory. As well as something else because of your eyes.” Liam said.
“I guess, although I don’t really know what the eye thing was all about. It was really weird to witness.” I said.
“You were angry when it happened.” Liam suggested and at my frown continued, “Like properly angry. Try thinking of something that makes you insanely made and focus on it.”
I thought of Abby briefly, and her betrayal, but my feelings towards her are more hurt than angry. I tried thinking of more incidents, but with my limited memories, I couldn’t come up with anything.
“I don’t have anything like that.” I said apologetically to Liam.
“We’ll just have to wait and see then. Next time you get mad, try to hone in on it.” Liam suggested, “In the meantime, we should head back to the warehouse.”
“Let’s go.” I smiled.
