“No way.” I said, standing up, despite the splitting headache she was giving me.
“Frisk, you're weak. I might almost feel bad when I take over.”
“Ha. That’s not going to happen anytime soon.”
“I’m not so sure about that.” Chara then pushed into control without any warning.
I still looked through my eyes, but Chara was the one controlling my body. She stepped towards my friends, but it took her effort, since I was still fighting against her.
“Finally. I'm in control again.” A red knife materialized in my hand. It was almost familiar to me… Somehow. My eyes were now crimson red, just like the knife that I now held. “Heya Sansy~. Do you remember me?” An evil smile swept across my face.
“no… i won't let you hurt them!” Sans said as his left eye flared. My soul then turned blue. “don't take another step forward.”
I tried to fight against her, but she was too strong. I knew Sans wouldn't hurt me, but still. Chara ignored his warning and started running toward them. Sans then tried to trap Chara in a blue bone cage like last time, but it didn't work. Once Chara was trapped in the bone cage, she used the knife to get rid of the bones.
“Don't remember this? I’ve learned new tricks over the years.” Chara said getting closer.
Sarah kept looking at me. “Stop it! Stop it Frisk!” She shouted, obviously confused, thinking it was me doing this.
“Sorry Sarah. Frisk isn't here right now.”
“I want Frisk!” She shouted.
“Frisk is gone!” Sans then summoned gaster blasters to try and intimidate Chara. After all, he wouldn't hit me with one. Would he?
“Aw, Sansy. That trick won't work on me. Plus killing me right now would send me to the save screen where I can reset. Right now I don't have full control and I can't reset because Frisk is still fighting me, but soon…”
“W-we’ll stop you.” I heard Alphys say. I wish that were true, but Chara’s almost impossible to stop. Only Sans could do it, and even then, it’s only for a little while. Sans then picked up Chara with his blue magic.
“Sans, you know you can't hold me forever. Soon your grip will loosen and I will come for you.”
“Y-you’d fail.” Alphys said. She doesn't know what she’s talking about. “We have plenty of people to fight you. It can't be too difficult to stop a little girl.”
“Hm. You know, I’ve never actually killed you before. When I get free you'll be on the top of my to kill list.”
“don't worry alphys, i’m sure i can hold them.” Sans said, unsure of himself.
Chara looked over at Sarah, and I could see tears running down her face. I wasn't going to let Chara hurt them. “Go away.” I said to her internally.
“Don't worry Frisk. After I kill them we can just reset again.”
“And then you’ll take over, kill everyone, and I'll never see Sarah again. Yeah, that sounds like a great deal.”
“It won't be that bad. We can do it together like we used to do.”
“I don't even remember that. And I wasn't in charge of what I did then either.”
“Don't play dumb with me. You enjoyed killing them along with me. You act as if you weren't even there. What a shame.”
“I'm not going to be like you.” I said. “Now leave my friends alone.”
“I’m not going to leave after I’ve come this far. Just let me take full control.”
“No.” I said, tears streaming down my face. “I won't let you hurt them.”
“Whatever. It will just take a little bit for you to give in. And I have the time to wait.”
My vision cleared, and I looked up at my friends. “I'm so sorry!” I exclaimed, tears running down my face like miniature waterfalls. Sans, still skeptical held everyone back.
“frisk, are you okay?”
“I don't think I'll ever be okay.” I said, hugging him.
“how much longer do you think you can hold out?” Sans said hugging back.
“Against Chara? Not much longer. She’s getting stronger, and I'm doing Was best I can to stop her. I don't want to hurt you guys.”
“truth is, i don't think i can hold her back much longer either.”
“U-um, s-she wasn't s-serious about killing me, was she?” Alphys asked nervously.
“sadly, she probably was. i don’t think that she's ever been able to get to you in any of the timelines.”
“So, I escaped from her then? In the other timelines, I mean.”
“only because undyne sacrificed her life to give you time to evacuate the monsters in hotland.”
“W-what? Undyne… lost against a little girl?”
“yeah… she did. and so did everyone else… except a few people, but that's beside the point…”
“O-oh.”
“I'm sorry!” I said again. “She’s just too strong! Sans, I know you may not believe me, but if I wasn't telling the truth, would I be upset right now?” I asked him, referencing our earlier conversation.
“i guess no… but we should still get moving if we want to try fixing the dt extractor.”
“Okay.” I agreed. “Let’s get started then.” We got to the lab in about twenty minutes. Alphys and Sans went to go work on the machine, and Sarah and I went to explore.
“hey al, have you found the problem with it yet?”
“I-it looks like the copper wires melted.” Alphys said from the other side of the machine. “We’re definitely going to need new ones.”
“i can go get some if you have any. last time i checked i didn't have any.”
“Okay. Sans?” Alphys asked right as he was about to leave. “What if we can't stop Chara? What’ll we do then?”
“you’re right. we'll probably need a backup plan if this fails. have any ideas?”
“No, not really. How about I go get the wire? That way you can hold Chara off if she come back?”
“that sounds good. i can watch them for you.”
“Okay, thanks.” Alphys said, grabbing her stuff. “I'll be back in a bit.”
“bye al.”
“Bye!” Alphys hurried towards the elevator.
“now, where did frisk and sarah go?”
“Sarah, come on!” I exclaimed. “You’re so slow!”
“I'm coming!” Sarah said from around a corner. “Just give me a second!” We header back towards the dt extractor.
“Hey Sans.” I said, looking around. “Where’s Alphys?”
“she just went to go get some supplies for the extractor.”
“Probably didn't want to be around me.” I said bitterly.
“no, she cares about you. she's just worried about you.”
“If she’s so worried, how come she barely talked to me the entire way down here?” I asked.
“i don't think anyone really talked that much while we were walking over here.”
“Sorry.” I said. “I'm just so sick of this. And I don't want to hurt you, or anyone else. You’d all be safer if I was gone.”
“we all care ‘bout you frisk. we want to help you.”
“But with Chara continually possessing me, can you really care about me that much? That if at any time I could turn into her, you’ll still be my friend? It seems impossible.”
“don't worry frisk, i wouldn't chara bit.” Sans shrugged.
“That's not funny.” I said. “But...if I do turn into Chara… I might kill you. I don't want to, but she’s getting harder to fight.”
“if she becomes part of your chara-cter, then we would find a way to stop her.”
“Okay. What-” I collapsed. “Not again.” I whispered to myself.
“frisk! is she taking over again?!” Sans teleported over to Sarah, ready to get them out of there.
“I-I think so.” I said, weakly. “Get...out.” Sans then teleported Sarah out to his house.
“Hi Frisk. Are you ready to reset yet?”
“N-no.” I said weakly. My vision started to blur, unlike the other times.
“You’re so weak, I almost take pity on you.”
“I-I won't let you… do...this.”
“Too late for that.” Chara then took over again.
It was different this time. She had more control. I was afraid I was going to lose it. Thank goodness everyone had left earlier.
“You know what? I think I'm going to wait for Alphys to come back. Then I can take them out one by one.”
“NO!” I yelled at her. “Don't. Please…”
“HAHA! You're so scared! You’ll like it, I promise.”
“NO! NO, NO NO! She doesn't deserve it, none of them do! Let me go!”
“Even after she lied to you about the amalgamates and being your friend?”
“She had good reason to lie! And she wasn't pretending, she really is my friend!”
“She built Mettaton to kill you. To me, that doesn't sound like friendship.”
“That was before she was my friend. Besides, Mettaton never really meant to hurt me anyway.”
“Hm. Let me think. He tried to take your soul to bake it in a cake, he had you defuse bombs so they wouldn't explode, he made you do the colored tile puzzle or you would be incinerated by jets of fire, and finally he hired monsters to attack you in the core. Did I miss any?”
“I don't care. No one truly did any damage to me in the end. They are all my friends.”
“They've all tried to kill you at one point or another.”
“But they didn't, in the end.”
“Ugh. Frisk, why do you have to be so stubborn?”
“I'm not stubborn. Leave my friends alone.”
“See, you’re doing it again. Just give up on them. There's no hope for them.”
“Why must I give up hope just because you have? I'll do whatever I can to make sure you don't hurt them!”
“Whatever. Anyway, look who's back!”
I heard the elevator open. “No!” I thought.
“Hi Alphys! Welcome back!” Chara said smiling at Alphys.
“W-what? Where’s Sans?”
“He’s gone. It's just you and me now.”
“U-um.”
Meanwhile, I was trying to fight against Chara, but she had taken complete control. Sans suddenly teleported into the lab next to Alphys out of nowhere.
“al, that isn't frisk. we need to get out of here now.”
“Aw, come on. Don't leave the party so soon. Things were just getting interesting.” Sans then took one look at Chara and for a moment, completely forgot that I was still here. My soul turned blue, and I got thrown against a wall. Then I blacked out. I woke up with Sans looking over me.
“hey, you okay kid? you don't look too good.”
“You...you said you wouldn't hurt me!” I yelled.
“i got you some nice-cream if it will make you feel better. you were knocked out for a bit, so it's a little melty.” Sans said giving Frisk the nice-cream.
“But you said you wouldn't hurt me!”
“that smile… she had that creepy grin on her face. the same one she did when she killed everyone. it was almost like a reflex...”
“What about your promise?”
“sorry, i dunno what i was thinking.”
“I don't know what you were thinking either. But I'm glad you came when you did. Is Alphys alright?”
“O-oh Frisk! You're awake! Sorry, I was working on the dt extractor after Sans said that he was going to watch over you while you were passed out. It's a-actually almost done. I just need to make sure that it won't fry again by adding some modifications.”
“Are you okay? I didn't hurt you, did I?”
“O-oh no no no. You didn't hurt me I’m fine. Don't worry about me.”
“Why should you guys worry about me, but I shouldn't worry about you? How does that make any sense?”
“Because we care about you Frisk. We know you have a lot on your mind right now, and we don't want to worry you.”
“yeah, what she said.” Sans commented.
“But-”
“No buts. Now I want you to sit down and rest, while I finish the dt extractor.” Alphys said, pushing Frisk onto one of the beds.
I sat in the bed, bored. “Sans?” I asked, wanting to talk, mainly because I was bored.
“yeah, kid? what's on your mind?”
“How...how many times did you battle Chara?”
“frisk, why are you asking me this now?”
“I'm just wondering. If you don't want to tell me, you don't have to.”
“i killed her 336 times, over and over and over again. until i became predictable, and she killed me.” Sans said looking at the ground.
“Sorry.” I said, my voice a whisper.
“well, i guess that makes us even.”
“I just want everything to be normal again.”
“i don't know what normal is anymore.”
“Should I just reset? It would make everything easier for everyone.”
“if you did, then you would have to go through the whole underground again. you would also be giving chara what she wanted.”
“But then everyone else would be happy. Toriel would be back, and Alphys wouldn't remember any of this. Sarah wouldn't of had to get mixed up in it either then.”
“you do know what i would have to do to you to trigger a true reset right?”
“Can't I just reset by choice?” I asked.
“true resets are different than regular ones. once you leave the underground, you need to die if you want to trigger a reset by yourself.”
“Oh. Do you want me to reset?”
“i would personally reset, but you have the final say in the matter.”
“I guess...I don't really want to. Sarah would miss me too much.”
“you don't need to make your decision right now.”
“Sans? Are you...scared of me?”
“no… i’m scared of what could happen…”
“What could happen?”
“anything… that's what scares me.”
“What scares you about it?”
“U-uh, hey guys! I'm done with the dt extractor. Sooo…”
“Okay.” We headed back over to the machine and I climbed in. “I hope this works…”
“I-it should work, don’t worry I’ve got this all under control. I think.”
“Okay.” I said nervously.
“I’m turning the dt extractor on... now!” Alphys said turning it on.
She flipped the switch, and for a moment everything went smoothly. Suddenly lights started flashing. “What’s going on?”
“Just stay calm, Frisk! Sans, can you help me with this?
“sure al.”
“Should I try to get out?!” I shouted.
“N-no! Everything's fine! Just a minor bug! Just stay still.”
“Okay!” I said. Then something hit me hard in the head. I blacked out.
