My mum took her hand off the doorknob and looked at us with her thinking face “let's go.” She commanded then walked over to my father, grabbed his legs and dragged him over to the door. Thinking fast I opened the door so she could drag him into the car,
“when you're boots are back on, close and lock the door and get in the car, I'll be waiting.” With that she dragged my dad down the front steps towards the car. When we were ready Charles headed out the door first while I closed and locked it like I was told to.
The second we got in the car my mum started driving, we barely had enough time to put on our seat-belts. When the car was quiet and the only thing you could hear was all of our breathing I spoke up and did my usual seven year old thing and started asking questions, “why did dad attack me? Why did he look different? What happened to him? Is he okay? Why did dad go after Charles? Is he dead? Why did you hit him with a frying pan?” I didn't have to see my mum’s face to see that she was annoyed and to my left I could tell Charles was shocked by the sudden questions, but wanted to know the answers just as bad as me.
She looked back at me and Charles through the rear view mirror “Dad didn't mean to attack you sweaty, to him you were in the way at the time. Dad looked different because he hasn't eaten in a few days, it's like when you need to drink blood once a month because you are a half vampire. Well your dad needs to drink blood at least every day. Otherwise he gets all angry and turns into an aggressive vampire. Dad is fine. He went after Charles as a source for food. No he is not dead. If I hadn't hit your father with a frying pan Charles may not be alive.”
Charles’ eyes widened “wait so all of you are vampires?” He asked looking very concerned and at this point scared shitless.
All my mum and I could do was laugh, “No, no, no!” My mother started,
“My husband, Abe’s father is a vampire. He wasn't one when we got married though. He was bitten a year before Abe was even a thought. When Abe was born and we discovered that he was a half vampire rather than a full vampire I was quite relieved, knowing that my son didn't have to drink blood all the time.”
Charles looked up at my mum from the back seat, “If Abe is only a half vampire then why does he have a crown?” Charles said conflicted. Because in the usual vampire lore vampires didn't have crowns, well at least not ones that exist only to the eye but do not exist when being touched.
I looked up at my mum confused “yeah mum, why do I have a crown?” I said putting my hands on my head as if to cover the magical floating crown, but my hands just pass through it making my crown float untouched above my hands.
My mum looked back at me sheepishly “When your father was bitten by a vampire it seemed that not only had he provoked a born vampire but it seems that they had also doubled as a witch, who of course in spite of being provoked put a curse on both of your father's children. Which was you and your brother.”
At this point both Charles and I were pretty shocked, this was the first time I've ever heard this story. While I was lost in thought, thinking about all of this new information that my parents had apparently been keeping from me.
Charles apparently had another thought in mind and that was to try and touch the floating crown on my head that we had been talking about just moments before. This got my attention, and me being me I practically attacked him when I got the odd sensation that my crown was being touched. By practically attacking him I mean I hit him pretty hard in the arm, multiple times until I knew for a fact that he'd have a giant bruise, With a couple added punches of course. "fuck off ya wanker!" Charles yelled getting pissed at me for hitting him, now trying to dodge my punches but to no avail due to it being a small car.
Once the car was quiet again I happened to realize that we had been driving for about two hours now. “Where are we going?” I asked starting to feel a bit anxious about the whole car ride to this mysterious place.
