As they drove to school, the siblings sat in awkward silence. As much as she wanted to speak, Ambrosia wondered if she would ever have the same relationship with Callum again. He had hurt her badly and caused her much pain.
Reaching school, Rose was glad to not see Callum for a few hours. She didn’t know how to handle the situation. The two darted out of the car, heading their separate ways. Their usual goodbyes forgotten.
Ambrosia hastily searched for Josephine or any of her friends in hopes of forgetting about her brother; anyone would have sufficed.
“Hi,” a cheerful voice stated from behind her, scaring the life out of Rose.
Turning around, Demetri stood there smiling.
“You scared me!” Ambrosia muttered, playfully hitting him on the arm.
Waiting with his arms folded and his foot tapping, Demetri stood.
“What?” she wondered, confused.
“Are you going to say hello back?”
“Hi.”
Demetri instantly lit up. Is that seriously all he wanted? Just a hello?
“That’s better. What happened? You look sad as if you’ve been crying,” Demetri asked as he gently touched her cold, wet cheek. Embarrassed and a little ashamed, Ambrosia looked away; she hated when people saw her crying, or even noticed she had been.
“Nothing happened. I’m fine.” Demetri eyed her in disbelief.
“I thought we were friends. I thought we could tell each other everything,” he frowned, looking downwards.
“After hanging out once? I’ve only known you for a day,” Rose scoffed.
“Well, it feels like an eternity. I guess I was wrong,” Demetri mumbled, putting his hands in the pockets of his jeans, seemingly upset. Wounded, Demetri glanced up at her before walking away.
What did I say? I only told the truth.
