The Builders and the War Fighters

X-87's introduction

X-87's introduction

Dec 13, 2017

X-87 was the finest tracker the Great Alliance ever had at their disposal; however, they had a tendency to not follow orders very well. So it was only fitting that they were tasked with an order as simple as track down and destroy Unit J-71. This order, however, was much more complex and difficult than anything X-87 had ever been issued, simply because J-71 was a legend. Whoever this Unit was, they had the know-how and the capability to avoid all radar, conceal all movements, and evade all those attempting observation. Therefore, there was almost a complete lack of documentation on this one Builder. X-87 would thus begin with the question, where was the last sighting of a Builder traveling? The local archive terminal yielded one sighting at Builder unit E-09’s laboratory, three years ago, and none since. Well, that was a dead end, they could be on the other side of the planet by now. Which living Builders were known to have common chats with J-71? I-29, G-49, G-38, E-54. Alright, that's something. Which of these Builders had the longest connection with J-71? Chat logs showed chats with G-49’s laboratory for as long as 1350 years. That would be a start.

As X-87 approached the G-49 laboratory, they detected a sudden burst of radio waves under an encrypted frequency of indecipherable signal pattern that ended suddenly. Any radio chatter that was encrypted without X-87 having the key code would almost certainly have to be a high-ranking Alliance encryption. That would most certainly not be found in such a remote location, which means it would most probably be someone who had the know-how and the capability to avoid all radar, conceal all movements, and evade all those attempting observation.

Good, now all X-87 needed to do was look at the logs and detect the weaker mirrored wave that would indicate the receiver of the transmission. After a bit of processing, they found 3 mirrored waves, one in the direction of the bunker of G-49, one in the direction of the irradiated sand fields, and one towards a titanium refinery to the south. The source must be somewhere in one of these directions. Naturally, the only place where J-71 would be was away from registered structures, that is, the sand fields. With that, X-87 made their way to the source as quickly as their enhanced maneuverability limbs could carry them.

It was a slight trouble finding the laboratory at first because of a clever system of ion emitters and the turning off of the radio equipment inside. When X-87 entered the laboratory, they found nothing unusual except a surprising quantity of capacitors, titanium plates, and of course, the fact that there was no Builder. Checking the rear door, they found what appeared to be the tracks of a multi-legged entity and marks that seemed to indicate the dragging of some kind of medium sized object behind them. X-87 didn’t know why none of the other trackers ever used tracks in the pale sands and rock to track down their targets, but it never seemed like something to make a scene about. They followed the tracks at full speed for about 1800 ticks before they caught sight of something moving in the distance. After zooming their optical sensors in on the object they noticed one medium-sized cube-shaped object and multiple mechanical parts moving in a seemingly erratic pattern. Aha! This must be what they were looking for. In one quick, dynamic movement they drew their melee weapons and were flying through the air in fast pursuit.
