No! No, no, no! James, what realm? Tyler thought frantically. There’s gotta be something else, another letter, something! He continued to search his brother’s pockets, looking for any other clues before the ambulance arrived.
“Excuse me, sir. We’ll take it from here,” An emergency vehicle was now parked in the open area where Tyler had let his bike sit. “Do you know who this is?” The man dressed in an officer’s uniform asked.
“My brother,” Tyler replied. “James Coffey, age eighteen, six foot three. Is there any more information you need?”
“No, that should be good.” The man replied as other nurses came and picked up James’s body. “What is your parents’ phone number, or have you called them anyway?”
“Calling them won't do any good,” Tyler replied. “They don't care.”
The officer stood, thoughtful for a minute. “Okay. Kid, they're taking your brother to the hospital to determine cause of death. Do you want me to take you there in my car?”
Tyler nodded slowly.
“And then when we’re done with that, we’ll figure out the whole thing with your parents, alright?”
Tyler nodded again. Will I finally get away from mom and dad? He thought hopefully.
He followed the officer into the blue and white vehicle and climbed in. “What did you say your name was again?” The police officer asked, turning to Tyler.
“My name is Tyler, sir.” He said quickly. The officer won't get upset quickly like my parents do, right? But I can't help but feel that he will.
“Tyler,” the officer repeated. “Well Tyler, let’s get you to the hospital then.”
The rest of the ride was in silence as Tyler sat with a million thoughts running through his head. When they arrived to the hospital, James’s cause of death had already been determined.
“The cause of death was an overdose of drugs. What kind of drug has yet to be determined, but we need more time to find that out.” One of the nurses told Tyler.
“Do you need me to drive you home?” The officer asked, who had also walked into the building with him.
I don't want to go home… Tyler thought, but decided to not have his thoughts mirror his words. “I'll just walk home. Thank you though, officer. Goodnight.”
As Tyler strode down the barely lit streets, he couldn't help but thinking that his brother’s death was somehow his fault.
