Kayden sighs and puts some more distance between them on the couch.
"What's the deal with that guy that just came through? Is he important or something? Everyone in the room looked at him and then got really silent. Is he some sort of authority figure?" Kayden asks her as he begins fumbling in his pants pocket for his flip top lighter. Kayden has a bad habit, of flipping the top of his lighter off and on when he got nervous. He wasn't nervous because he was talking to the girl next to him. He was nervous of what her response to his question would be. Moments of silence pass between them and the girl next to him doesn't look so well. Her face has gone pale and her hair is falling half down, her eyes are staring at a place on the floor, and her fingers rest on her lap.
"You should be more careful about asking about them around here. Especially in headquarters, anyone with a black leather hooded jacket is our bosses' most trusted and appointed officials. Kind of like his own personal little army. That man you have seen, he is one of the top Specials and almost could be the bosses right-hand man. Except for the fact, that everyone here can sense the fact he is stronger than our boss and could easily take over this whole establishment if he wanted too. But he doesn't, because for him I think it's about the thrill of the hunt and excitement of the kill. Most assignments have to be dealt with properly, you know and he has the highest success rate of kills to date. But, don't talk to him. If you can, stay out of his way. He isn't one to be talked about, or to attempted to be handled. He goes about his day and we go about ours. All Specials of the bosses are to be treated with the utmost respect, we can provide for them. To make this place feel a lot more like home for them." The girl says softly, Kayden has to put his ear closer to her mouth as he scoots closer to her to hear what she is saying.
Kayden's blood already begins to boil and every fiber of his being is screaming to run up to the Special he had just seen, just so he could sucker punch him and put him down on the same level with everyone else. But, Kayden bites back his anger, the back of his bottom lip begins sting because it is almost raw from where his teeth have been biting it. He clenches his fist, and but then he stops as he looks over at the girl next to him who has tears in her eyes. Kayden can see the look in her eyes, and it's a look he knows far too well. The look of longing to see a family member again after they have been gone on vacation for a while or travel across the country only stopping in for birthdays or holidays.
"You know him don't you?" Kayden asks her as her tear-filled eyes look up to him, she takes off her glasses and Kayden almost blushes at how pretty she looks with her glasses off. He watches as she begins to fix the flower hair clip in her dark chocolate covered hair, and begins to tug at the gray lab coat jacket she is wearing. A crimson red capital "A" is sewn into the shoulder of her jacket and her name tag is clipped to the top right pocket of her jacket. He realizes at this moment she works here and isn't just a new applicant like he is. He almost lifts the hood of his jacket to cover the embarrassed look on his face but decides against it. He doesn't want to draw any unwanted attention to himself and lifting his hood might cause people to notice him. He'd rather blend in and stay cloaked behind the heavy movement of people rushing around in front of him.
"I use to know him. But now I don't even recognize the face in front of me anymore. Especially since I got fired today, for failing the psychiatric testing that is required to stay in my field. I was an Alterist. But, lately I have been slipping on the job and there has been a lot of stress over some family issues. It was quietened down in the past, but now the boss has been looking into it and it raised questions. I agreed to take the testing today because I thought it would help my chances of keeping my job. But instead, it caused me to lose it. I am Lana Kane by the way. Just call me Lana." The girl replied to him, as she reaches him a card with her name on it. Kayden looks at the picture on the card of her, and it looks nothing like her the image is blurred and all you can see is the light reflecting from her glasses and the chocolate brown strings of her hair falling down around her face. Kayden slips the card into his pocket and looks over at her.
"I am Kayden Knight. Call me Kayden, but don't call me Crazy." Kayden speaks to her flashing her a smile, as a couple of small laughs escapes from his throat. Lana glanced at him and laughs a little bit at what he had said.
"What's the red "A" stand for on your shoulder?" Kayden asks her quickly. She gives him a look and rolls her eyes as she begins slipping things into the small black backpack that she had been carrying with her, as it sits on the couch next to her.
"I told you I am an Alterist."She states back to him, no longer looking at him as she slips off her name tag and shoves it into the bag.
"Um, what's an Alterist? I have never heard of an Alterist before. Is it something like a scientist?" Kayden asks her as he scoots away from her again, back to his side of the couch.
"Well yes, you could say that. An Alterist is a person who alters the genetics of some of the injections promoting the expanding capabilities of one injection or limiting the capabilities of the others. In series of three injections, we balance the injection's capabilities out per each individual. Sometimes it's a good thing, and other times it is an awful thing. Some people just can't handle the side effects of the injections." Lana responds to him, as she stands up, and throws the backpack on her shoulder. Kayden swallows hard as he wonders what kind of madness exactly he had gotten himself into. He watches as she starts to walk away, then he glances down and notices that her phone is laying on the couch. He reaches down and grabs the phone when his fingers touch it the screen lights up revealing a text message. Kayden doesn't want to pry, but his curiosity gets the best of him as he presses the button to "View" the message icon blinking on the screen.
"Goodbye, Lana. -C.R."
That is all that the message says, he closes the message back and runs over to where Lana is walking getting ready to step outside of the entrance doors? Kayden quickly taps her on the shoulder and reaches her phone out to her as she turns to face him.
"You forgot your phone." Kayden blurts out quickly as she takes it out of his hands inspecting it to make sure nothing was broken or Kayden hadn't done anything to it. Once she is satisfied with the phone's condition and checked everything twice over, she lifts her eyes to lock with Kayden's eyes. She stares at them for a few minutes and then she breaks the awkward silence between them,
"Thanks, good luck today. I hope you like it here." Lana says quickly. She flashes him a quick smile and he watches her walk out those doors. He stands there staring in the direction she left in, as he feels a finger tap him on the shoulder.
A girl with blue hair is standing behind him as he spins around and meets her eyes with his. Her eyes are brown with an orange and lime tint around her pupils and her skin is a sun-baked cinnamon brown color. Her natural blue hair sparks a curiosity in Kayden as he gives her an awkward smile.
"Are you Kayden Knight?" The girl asks him as she looks deep into his hazel eyes. He coyly rubs the back of his neck and smiles at her.
"Yeah, I'm Kayden." He replies to her as the smell of fruity flavored perfume almost intoxicates him. Her scent was warm and inviting much like all those other girls he had brought home that ended up gone the next morning. But Kayden could tell by the look in her eyes, that she had something special about her.
"Please follow me." The girl tells him, and so he follows her. She leads him over to the door with the number pad, key card slot, and fingerprint scanner. She slides her card, Kayden chooses to look away as she types in her numbers and then she places her hand on the handprint scanner.
The voice comes through the intercom repeating its previous statement. "Special Identified: Please Continue through." Kayden follows her as the doors slide open to reveal a glass elevator, which they both step into together. The doors slide shut immediately behind Kayden as he almost stumbles, as the elevator begins to rapidly move up the side of the building. Once Kayden steadies, his footing on the moving elevator floor. He looks over to the girl with blue hair, who is standing in the opposite corner of the elevator staring out the glass windows panes the elevator passes by, staring out into the view of the sunset slowly setting on top of an ocean. Kayden's mouth opens, as he shifts his eyes toward the oceanic view from the glass windows of the elevator. He places his hands on the glass, forgetting that the glass seemed to be the only thing separating him from reaching out and touching the ocean.
"I have never seen this ocean before. Is the view from the elevator always this breathtaking?" Kayden asks as he continues to stare at the oceanic horizon that laid off in the distance.
"That ocean is the ocean of Zerona. You can actually feel the Zerona's waves rushing up onto your toes, it's like heaven there. So if you visit Zerona beach, be sure to stick your toes in the waves. It is one of the most beautiful locations to visit on the planet. Sometimes, we get assignments near there so stop and visit the beach if you ever get the chance. I never get tired of seeing it from the elevator's here." The girl replies as she stares out at that same ocean. Her blue hair is hanging just beneath her shoulder blades and as the light shines in through the elevator's glass panes, her sun-kissed brown skin seems to glow with a radiance that Kayden hasn't encountered before. In this light, Kayden's breath is taken away by the sight of the woman in front of him instead of the oceanic view he had moments before. He blushes as he makes his way over toward her.
"Thanks for the tip, I'll be sure to visit it if I ever get the chance too. But I only have one condition if I ever visit there." Kayden tells her, as he stands close to her inhaling her perfume almost as if the very scent of it is a drug, that it almost gives him an instant high feeling. Sweeping him off of his feet, and up into the sky soaring high above the clouds floating above them. When her brownish orange eyes meet him, he is smacked back down to his spot in the elevator standing there with her.
"What's your condition?" The woman asks him as she fumbles, with a pen of the clipboard trying not to look nervous. Her tone was cold and empty, leaving her words as flat as the clipboard she carries in her hands.
"If you will go with me," Kayden says cheerily, flashing her his playful smile. As his mind begins to fill with all the possible things she could respond to him. Wondering if she was just another pretty painted face of an angel or a wolf in a beautiful disguise.
"I can't go with you. My boyfriend wouldn't like that, and neither would my boss. He doesn't believe in partnering people up, that wouldn't be good for each other. I don't think you'd be good for me." The girl responds to him, as her eyes give him a sinister glare. Kayden sighs and shakes his head.He watches as she walks over to where he had been standing a few minutes before, putting distance between the two of them.
Kayden watches her walk over to his spot, and he can feel the temperature change in the elevator. He knows the moment has passed and like all the other girls, she too is now just a remnant of something he thought could be possible that won't ever be anything more than a beautiful memory that left him breathless.
The elevator doors slide open, and she leads him out of the elevator into a long metal hallway. Kayden shutters as the elevator doors slide shut quickly behind him and beginning to descend back down. He stares at the metal walls around him as the girl leads him down the fluorescent-lit hallway of a dozen doors, on either side that they could walk into, he glances at the labels on the door that are all blank. She leads him straight down the hallway until they reach the large metal door with another handprint scanner, key card slot, and a number pad that sits perfectly aligned with the elevator doors at the other end of the hallway. Once again she slides her card, enters the numbers, and places her hand on the scanner. Then over the intercom comes the voice of the man that had called Kayden on his cell phone.
"Yes, what is it?" The man's voice is still deep and raspy even over the intercom. Then a phone on the opposite side of the wall rings, and Kayden watches as the girl picks it up and holds it to her ear.
The static of the intercom goes silent, as Kayden struggles to hear the raspy breathing of the man on the other line. Kayden can feel the sweat beginning to pour down his forehead. As he stands there looking around, he locks his eyes with the security camera overhead that seems to zoom in on his face. Kayden swallows hard but doesn't break eye contact with the security camera.
"Boss, I have a new applicant here. I was going to do the interview myself, but I wanted to check with you first before taking anyone new into the conference room." The girl says gently as she speaks into phone pressed to her ear.
