A Familiar Shadow

Complications

Complications

Dec 15, 2017

I turned my gaze downward. I felt overwhelmed. “Why am I here?” I asked, not picking my head up.

I heard her sigh as she leaned back into the booth, “You should know why you’re here. We tried to solve this simply before, but now that things are starting to become a bit more serious, we decided to intervene. You may think that right now it might not seem too serious, but the state of your mind is so terrible we had to make you see the damage that you were doing with your clouded vision.”

I raised my head, suddenly angry, “What do you mean ‘we’?!” I shouted, “You’re the only real person here, and you look just like me. What’s up with that? None of this makes sense... for all I know this is all just a dream and none of this is real, and when I wake up I’ll just go back to my crappy old life with my crappy job!” I screamed at her.

A cup of coffee slammed down on the table placed there by a speck of light. Suddenly, I was aware of all the eyes on me in the cafe, even the black glob had turned to see the commotion.

I shifted my gaze downward, surprised by my own outburst. The other Pandora kept her eyes on me, a tinge of impatience mingled in her expression.

“I want to show you something,” she said getting up.

I followed her out the door, avoiding the eyes of the people in the cafe that followed us out.

She walked slower than she had before, as she made her way down the sidewalk. I felt as if I was a child that was being reprimanded. I turned my head away from her and began to notice the increasing number of black spots in my vision. I took the glasses that she had put on me earlier and tried wiping them, but when I looked back up without the glasses the spots had disappeared.

Slowly I placed the glasses back on, bracing for what I was about to see. My vision was immediately covered with black. I yelped with fear as I fell back grappling with it. I struggled to breathe as it wrapped itself around my face.
