So now you know why I am running through the forest at night. I had to leave Silver behind at the edge of the forest because it wouldn't have been safe for any of us even though it would have been much faster if I had chosen to ride him instead. I'm currently carrying my friend, Indy, close to my chest with one hand while I use the other to help me keep my balance and to keep unseen branches from hitting me in the face. Indy had already tired herself out and was currently resting and saving what was left of her strength for one last spell for when we finally reached the monument. The spell would raise a plant based barrier up around us and the monument to protect us from our pursuers. It would also buy me a few more precious moments to find and release the black beast from its prison.
Suddenly we burst into the small clearing where the monument stood. Weary from our flight, I stumbled up to it and caught myself on the edge of the concrete slab before I could collapse from my exhaustion. I braced myself against it just long enough to gently place Indy down on top of it before I sat down at base of the pedestal. I stayed there and waited for our pursuers with my back leaning against the red brick to give myself a chance to rest and catch my breath.
While I sat there, I thought about where the monsters could've possibly hidden the black beast's heart and whatever object they used to keep it imprisoned with. They had to have done this because simply leaving it out in the open would not have only made it too easy to find and too tempting to steal but it would have been a very stupid move on their part. They also had to have made it relatively easy to excess and move too so they wouldn't damage it by accident in case they had to move the heart to a different location.
I had only been thinking about it for a few moments when the group hunting us found us. The group was comprised of monster/human hybrids who had chosen to remain in their stolen human forms to be more 'sporting'. You see, even though they were much weaker in their human forms they were still stronger and faster than most normal humans. But humans are a race of survivors and I am no exception. However, had they understood this better and taken the two of us more seriously than they had, we would never have reached the monument. If you ask me, it was another poor decision on their part to let us get that far, but I digress.
The monster/human hybrids burst out of the forest and into the monument's clearing shortly after I sat down. When they saw us, they realized the two of us were exhausted from them chasing us and they paused to gloat and congratulated themselves on catching Indy and me before spreading out to encircle the monument and us. They kept their distance from us, at first, but they soon made clear their reasons for doing this as they slowly transformed into their respective monster forms in front of us.
