Chara smiled slightly. Sans didn’t seem to find it as funny.
“Kid, you have 10 seconds to tell me what you did to my brother. I know he’s not dead. So what did you do to him?”
Chara gulped.
‘I saved his life.”
Sans threw back his head and laughed, short and sarcastic.
“You…? Ha! Right. After killing half the underground, you ‘saved’ my brother. All we know is that when you entered the underground, Alphys’s entire camera system went down. The only witnesses report that the whole place ‘went dark, and there was a sound like shattering glass.’ So i will ask you one more time. WHERE.IS,MY. BROTHER!!” Sans screamed these last words. The calm, collected person who had spared her life seemed gone, replaced by someone driven by one thing;
The desire to protect his brother.
Chara grinned. “Relax. I didn’t do anything to hurt him. All i did was tuck him, and everyone else, into a pocket in space and time. A way to protect them.”
She stared at the ground, tears welling in her eyes again. When she spoke, it was barely in a whisper.
“To protect them from me.”
Chara collapsed on the floor, sobbing.
“I-I almost killed them! If Frisk hadn’t come up with the idea of storing them in a pocket…”
Sans didn’t have time to wonder what she meant. He pulled a notepad and pen from his pocket, and scribbled something on the pad. When he was done he ripped of the top sheet and folded in in half. With a flick of his wrist, it disappeared in a blue flash.
As soon as it was gone, he pulled out his phone, the only thing he had from a previous time. The dull blue devise had been a gist from Toriel, the very first time any of this had happened, back when he thought they would all get a happy ending.
Within seconds he found the number he needed.
“Alphys? It’s me, Sans.”
Yes i realize that we are in the middle of a crisis, thats why im calling you..”
“No, im fine. In fact, you can call off the emergency. Start bringing everyone back.”
“Yeah, i found the human. It’s….Complicated.”
“No, They aren't going to hurt anyone. In fact, check the MTT resort. You might find something that will shock you.”
As he said this, he shot Chara a meaningful look. Getting his meaning, she bent over, concentrating. A burst of energy left her, shooting out the door, towards the resort. Sans nodded at her, and she gave a weak smile.
“No, it’s nothing bad. Just send someone over.”
“No, that’s not why i called you. In your lab coat pocket you will find a note. You’ll need to power up the machine with those exact settings, as well as have the other things listed on hand. “
“The note will explain everything.”
There was a brief pause, presumably as Alphys checked her pocket. After a moment a voice blared out of the phone.
“No, i'm not kidding. I think we have a chance here. If we can do this…”
No, of course i'm not sure. But do you remember that paper you showed me?”
“But this may be our only chance.”
“Please Alphys. We have to try.”
“Ok. i’ll be there in a few minutes.”
Sans ended the call and walked back over to Chara.
She still lay on the floor. She had resumed sobbing, muttering something about ‘Demon,’ and ‘No good’.
“Chara?”
She looked up at him, tears in her eyes.
“Can I talk to Frisk for a moment?”
She nodded, before her eyes rolled back in her head. When she focused again, her eyes where a light brown.
“Hey Sans.” Frisk Mumbled. “You look like crap.”
For the first time, Sans looked down at himself. His jacket was ripped in dozens of places, and a couple of his bones had nicks.
“Have you seen yourself lately buddy?”
Frisk laughed. “Good to see you haven't changed. So what’s going on now?”
“Im taking you to Dr.Alphys.”
Frisk frowned.
“How come?”
Sans smiled. Frisk didn’t waste any time reassuring him she was alright. She just got right to the point.
“Well. it may have something to do with the passenger you’re carrying right now.”
Frisk reached up to touch the heart shaped locket hanging over her chest.
“Is that where she is, when she isn’t being you?”
Frisk frowned. “Sort of. If I took the locket off, she would still be here. It’s more a…. Symbolic connection.”
Sans nodded.
“She’s really scared you know.”
Sans looked at frisk.
“She knows that what she did was wrong. That’s why she agreed so easily to my plan to just ‘store’ all the monsters. She didn’t want to hurt anyone anymore. She seems to think it has something to do with my soul…”
Sans grinned. “Chara is one smart girl, i’ll give her that. Remind me to show you Dr. Gaster's notes at some point. He had some good thoughts on it. To answer your earlier question, Alphys is going to perform, well, I guess you could call it a transplant. She’s going to move Chara from you to something else.”
Frick nodded. For once Sans thanked the repetition of this world. Due to being aware of each and every one, Frisk had as much experience and maturity as a much older human.
“Now if you will hold my hand…”
Frisk grabbed onto his hand without question. She had probably guessed what he was going to do.
They began to glow with a blue light. In front of them, a glowing doorway appeared. Through it they could see a cluttered lab, covered in a slight layer of dust, with various huge machines scattered throughout,
They stepped through, and into the lab of the royal scientist, Dr. Alphys.
