Relic From the Past

Relic From the Past

Jan 10, 2018

At a very wide dusty road, that made of cobblestones, wide enough that can fit 2 small houses together, lies not even a single person in sight. The roads are empty, the buildings looked dead, it is practically a ghost town.

But, at certain inn ahead nearby, it was quite lively. People were gathered at the inn eating and drinking, rejoicing themselves. Above them at the 2nd floor a person who looks like in a hurry is panicking, as if searching for something or someone.

"I can't believe i lost it..."

The person then look out the window with melancholic eyes.

"I wonder if she's okay... it's very unlike her to be late or maybe not..."

After keep wondering for a while, searching for something, the person suddenly snap their finger as if realized of something.

"Oh right!! I'll just ask him!"

The person then move searching for certain someone and found him. He wear a cowboy hat and 2 large belts that wrap his shoulders, making an X at his chest, the belt is usually filled with bunch of knives- but not this time.

"Mr Bronze!!"

"Oh, what is it Hemeth?"

"What time is it?"

"Time? No idea."

"Huh? Well.. let me see your 'Titel'."

"What's that for?"

"Time - Teller!! How could you not know that!?"

"I knew what Titel is, what i meant is what's that thing gotta do for me?"

"Well.. its telling time..? It's very important."

"We adventurer live free, not bound ourselves with such thing."

Hemeth shocked when said that proudly, in Hemeth eyes, their cool images of adventurer is starting to crumbles. What Bronze says is just outright stupidity, in their world there's no a single thing that can measure time but Titel.

"Titel is the most common thing people have!! Even Vali has one!"

"Geez, of course Vali has one. She's always running short of it (time)."

"That's not the point Mr.Bronze!! It's the only way we can tell when or where to meet and planning something, it is very important! losing track of time is like... losing your own existence!!"

"I keeping my track of time Hemeth, I'm just using much simpler method."

"Simpler method? That is..?

"Feelings."

"..."

"Aw c'mon Hemeth, I always work alone, those things probably important for group like yours, but not me."

"We need to go out now."

"Not waiting for Vali? She said to get prepared so we can do the next hunt as soon as possible after she check another equipment Bernam place right?"

"She's always on time and its already past that. I worried because of it, we should check her."

"Huh? I thought you lost your Titel? That's why you asking for mine right?"

"Well..."

"Did you used my 'method'?"

"...We're both going out now! I'll buy Titel for both of us!"

Hemeth grabbed Bronze arm with both hands, and started to drag him downstairs. But, as they reached there, they noticed it's quite crowded, and people were seems having a joyful feast, as if they celebrating something.

"OOh Hemeth! Going out?"

Said one of the people there, which soon be followed by many others.

"We in your debt again Hemeth and Miss Vali!" "I hope she beat the crap out of those Gambits!" "I heard that most of them already noticed her visiting, so they all regrouping to their camps."

"What do you guys mean?" Asked Hemeth.

"Huh? Miss Vali didn't told you? She's going to talk with the Gambit leader right now, it's about time we fix this place."

"What!?"

"Hmm I thought she wants no part in this matter? I don't think she's the type that love helping people anyway." Said Bronze.

"There must be something happened."

"This' Missy' seems a very reliable person for you guys huh? You all seems pretty assured that she will fix yer dead town while you guys doing celebration."

The atmosphere at the place turned quiet, people stopped with what they were doing and just staring at Bronze.

"Instead of helping her right now? Talk about dignity, these people is lower than 'Filken' I ate this morning."

(Note: Filken is small animal that commonly eaten, they had instinct to running away at anything that approaches them, commonly known for its cowardice.)

The people start to goes upside down, they glares at Bronze, enraged by his taunt and start shouting.

"Shut up! you're just an outsider!!" "You don't know anything about us or this town!!" "The Gambits itself is also Miss Vali fault!! It's just natural that she fix it herself!!"

"Mr.Bronze, we need to go there fast!"

"Sure Hemeth, we should.... HELP OUR FRIENDS INSTEAD HAVING A PARTY right?"

Hemeth looks at Bronze then at the people in the inn. He saw they became somewhat silent.

"...Yeah."

As Hemeth and Bronze leave, the inn gone silent, same as any other buildings. It truly is a ghost town at this very moment.

"Hemeth, slow down a bit! I havent digested the food properly this morning!"

"We're in a hurry Mr.Bronze! But, if you really need a rest you should relax a bit..."

"You know I'm new to this town right?"

"...right...oh! Let's go here then!"

"Heh?"

Hemeth took a turn and entered a building, Bronze looking at it. The building has many random engraved numbers scattered all over it, and in the middle is a sign with word "Time will tell, TITEL STORE." On it.

"Really?"

It only took a few minutes until Hemeth pops out from the building, Hemeth then gave some sort of device to Bronze.

"Ugh..."

"What?"

"My way of life..."

"You're part of the group now Mr.Bronze, like it or not you have to use it!"

"Fine,fine."

"Okay lets go."

"Sure."

"Wait... now I'm the one who exhausted..."

"Seems the adrenaline has running out eh?"

"I gotta rest for a few minutes."

"...sure."

Meanwhile at the same time,in a very large tent with many camps surrounds it, and many people all around, Vali entered the Main tent.

The tent is abnormally huge, it has many guards and weapon stash, like an armory. And at the middle of the tent, there's a big chair like a throne, with a man sitting on it.

He has spiky brown hair, with dead sharp eyes and sharp eyebrows. He wears big armor and has a very big sword leaning at the side of his chair, and at his hand, is some kind of device that has glimpse of lights emmited on and off at it.

There's something off about the people there, all of them looks like a lifeless man, except for the guard that stand next to the guy at the throne. He is different than surrounding guards, He's bigger, with large shield at his back and a curved sword - a very weird combination.

"Kale."

"..."

"I'ts Vali."

"...Liberator..."

"You seems out of shape."

"..."

"I heard your people givign the town a hard times, what happened?"

"..."

"If you won't say anything then I'll just take my leave then."

"Wait." Said another person, its the guard that stand next to Kale.

"...?"

"My sincerest apology miss Liberator, but it'll took some time for Lord Kale to-"

"There's... nothing left for you here, Liberator." Said Kale suddenly

He still looks down with his shoulder that seems giving up on him, he looks like would fall over the chair at any second.

"...?"

"You should heads toward lower levels, while you still can..."

"And that implies?"

Kale lift one of his arm, the one that holding glowing device, up to Vali. The guard that next to him startled quite a bit with what Kale did. Vali noticed it but she still have no idea what exactly Kale is holding.

"You see this...?"

"...?"

"It will bring end to all morgue."

"And what is that?"

"Not just morgue, but all level two along with it..."

"If its something that dangerous I won't let you."

As Vali was walking towards him she noticed that something is not right. The guards aren't even trying to stop her, include the guard that next to them, It's like all of them already put into despair. Vali then took the device from Kale, she snatch it just like that, it was that easy.

"...what is this? What's going on?"

Kale then began to shed tears, with his dead eyes, he looked like someone who lost his soul.

"...Airis..."

"?"

"Airis my daughter... is dead."

"..."

"She's the last of my kin... the last family... the last Gambit. And she's gone..."

"..."

"The thing you holding... It's all because of it... it's the reason Morgue kept chasing us all the way here is because of it."

"What is this...? It looks like a small crossbow. But, with a hole on it's tip, you put arrow on this?"

"Why don't you try shoot it like a crossbow...?"

"..."

Vali looked at Kale, she saw him looking at her, even though it was a glimpse, but his head was moved just for a bit. She then decide tu pull the trigger, but the guard that stood next to them stopped her.

"Miss Liberator please..."

"... you can just call me Vali, Bartlett."

Vali know him, he's not a mere guard, he's Gambit general, They fought side by side during battle with morgue after all.

"Lord Kale is not thinking straight for many days now... I hope you understand."

"... I'm very sorry to heard your loss, Kale."

"The thing you currently holding is a very dangerous weapon- a relic from ancient technology." Explained Bartlett.

"Is it truly possible for this to do thing he said?"

"It's very possible."

"I'll leave it to you then."

"Thank you again... Miss Liberator."

"... where I can visit his daughter?"

"...? She has.. no grave."

"Huh?"

"She's died during your-"

"Performance." Said Kale suddenly.

"Caught in the blast then..."

"Yes... the fact my lord saw it himself is what caused such devastation on him."

"But he was fine when the battle is over."

"He wasn't believed it at first, Airis where about was always a secret, only main family knows it. And since they all died, it leaves my lord and her daughter remained."

"Then...?"

"Until month ago he received news from level two that Airis was running away from her hideout, trying to follow his father during the battle.

"..."

"From your eyes we probably looks having a victory over the battle, but no... for us its a downfall. We were once a great family, a very strong clan, even rival the level two empire it self. But, now we're just waiting to perish, all our hopes and dreams died with Airis, and left us with a broken man..."

"Aren't Kale just said that he will kill all the Morgue?"

".. He's just saying things, he believe he still want to have revenge on them, but the grief is too much that's not even had space for revenge."

"..."

"He's broken, he say things sometimes, but won't do anything. Like most of his loyal guards here- they just... stand there, not even eat for the past few days. They probably fell if you poke them.

"Then what about you?"

"I... actually want to asked you a favor...an unreasonable one... but perhaps you can cast miracle on us once more."

"What?"

"I want you to check level two, if Airis just might be still alive."

"That's..."

"I know... but i just want to cling on hope, no matter how small it is.."

"For a general to 'hope' is kind of funny. Besides, why would I do that? don't you have many peoples?"

"All Gambits members are hunted and banished from level two, all the people on Gambit I trusted already has their face knows to all level two. We really don't have anyone to trust with such task except you."

"This will cost you alot."

"Anything you asked."

"That relic then."

"...!!!"

"No?"

"IF..!!! If you can bring her alive..."

"Also traveling expense."

"Yes."

"Vali then looks at Kale, right in his lifeless eyes.

"We all lost someone important that day."

"..."

"And it doesn't stop me."

"..."

"..."

Bartlett, may I 'test' the weapon somewhere it could be tested?"

"I'm not sure... I never saw it works, just from my lord description... so I think it's a very bad idea to even 'test' it."

Kale face once again lifted slightly, just until he can barely see Vali's face.

"You can... use it here..." Said Kale again, suddenly.

"..."

Vali then swiftly took the weapon from the General hand, and shoot the weapon upwards while he still startled. The weapon makes a beep sound, then ray of white light emitted from within, then sprayed outside, followed with bright red radiance over it. It's a laser that shoots all the way up.

"WABAGHJODEUR!!!!!!!!"

The general was so shocked he chanting words that sounds like a cursed spells.

Vali stopped the shooting immediately, she realized by Kale mean he can just destroyed level 2 with it or even whole other levels.

"ARE YOU MAD!!?"

"Calm down general, it doesn't hit the level ceiling.. but I'm sure if I shoot longer it will reach it."

"YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED IF IT GOES THOUGH THE SURFACE RIGHT!?"

"End of the world?"

"!!!!!"

"Like I said calm down... it's what Kale wanted to show me. Besides, you're terrible liar Bartlett."

"I- The weapon power must remain secret! It must not be known!!"

"Is that the reason the weapon isn't used during the battle?"

"N-no... the relic, even though has great destructive power, it required a very long time to recharge it's power."

"I see.."

"It's still an unknown device, there's no one know how is it work or even exist yet... except those Morgue and us of course."

"That mean the weapon was used before?"

"Yes, it was used during the war at level two... It keep recharging since then, until few weeks ago."

"How long is it shoot?"

"I.. don't know, probably few minutes."

"But, even though it's that dangerous you seems not lying about giving it to me if I found Airis."

"...Ai...ris..." Said Kale faintly speaking.

Vali then gets closer to Kale, She's bent a bit, looking Kale face closely. And amidst the despair looking face with dead eyes, Vali know the man is still struggling inside he just need his "cure" to win it.

"You're still there aren't you Kale? I'll get your might be still alive daughter so just wait."

"..."

"And General."

"What?"

"Please get your men together, they've been causing many troubles to the town."

"It can't be helped with our current situation... but I will try."

Vali then stands up, she's about to give the weapon back to the General, but then she noticed some kind of ancient word engraved on the weapon.

"Bartlett, can you read this?"

"Do I look like an archaeologist to you?"

"...I'll be leaving in two hours, please prepared for my expense at the main town entrance. Also Airis description, would be favorable if someone can draw her face."

"Will do!... and ... very much thank you , for this."

"She's most likely dead, so don't thank me yet."

After said that Vali leave the massive tent, and on the outside, she greeted by Hemeth and Bronze who already waiting there.
