I sped my run to a sprint and my lucky black bag smacked hard against my back. I started to feel sweat drip down the side of my face and run into my mouth. It tasted salty and sucked the moisture right out of my mouth and caused my breathing to become hitched but it didn't stop me, I kept on running.
More guards appeared from the other end of the corridor, cornering me off. One of the guards being Constance Decoux, the French bitch who I hated with a vengeance.
I skidded to a halt, almost losing my balance in the process. My heart was really racing now and I could hear the sound of footsteps coming up behind me.
I was surrounded!
The sound of sarcastic clapping came from behind me and I slowly turned around to face James Knight, in the flesh.
He was two years older than myself, at twenty-five. Tall, with handsome features that could compete with a male model, thick blonde hair styled back professionally and was wearing an expensive looking tailored suit. No doubt, he had every girl falling for his every need.
You wouldn't be able to comprehend how much I hated this rich jerk, just the sight of him made me want to vomit my insides out. From what I had learnt, he wanted to use the bioweapon he created on the city, for reasons I wasn't quite sure yet, but I didn't want to find out.
"Is it too much of me to ask, to see the man behind the mask?" He spoke in his stuck up English accent. "Please."
Did I forget to mention he has a thing about manners. It irritates me to the core. How could such a cruel sadistic man have such good manners?
One of the many mysteries I had learnt about James Knight, while undercover.
He was referring to the bandana that was tied across my face. In fact, it had slipped off my face earlier, when running around but nobody had seen me and I had managed to tie the piece of cloth back around my face.
Knight's sharp green eyes ventured up and down me, he was looking for a weakness but he couldn't find one and nor could he stop me.
There was only two guards behind me, including Constance and one in front of me, along with Knight. I was already forming a plan in my head, I would be out of here in less than twenty minutes. I clicked the timer on my watch.
"The masked man doesn't speak. I wonder why? Hiding a secret are we?" He played with me.
I still didn't answer him. I didn't want to waste my breath on him.
"I'll have the N2 Virus back now, please!" He reached his hand out towards me in a gesture for me to give back the vial I had stolen from him.
So the bioweapon was a virus of some sort. That didn't sound good at all. I laughed at him, I wasn't going to willingly give back such an item that could kill millions of lives.
"It's not that funny when a civilian's life is on the line." He smirked and I immediately stopped laughing.
He motioned with his hands and two more guards came walking in from the corner of the corridor, with a firm grip on Danny Clyde.
My heart sank, Danny was my best friend and the guitarist of our band, Lost Dreams.
He looked scared, out of his mind and was struggling to get out of the security guard's grip. I swallowed nervously when I glanced at him and he looked at me, his brown eyes sharpening with confusion.
Even with half my face covered, and goggles covering my forehead. He knew it was me, he had known me too long to be fooled otherwise. In fact, I would be offended if he didn't know it was me.
"I found him wondering outside the building, looking for someone. Do you know him?" Knight questioned.
I shook my head and shrugged.
"It beats me," I finally spoke.
A repulsive smile formed on Knight's lips, forcing a shiver down my spine.
"Then you don't mind me killing him then."
Out of nowhere, he grabbed Danny by the collar and placed a sharp knife across his neck. My heart started to pound and Danny started to breathe in sharply. I couldn't let Danny die on my account but I couldn't let Knight have the vial either.
One death or millions?
Knight placed more pressure against Danny's neck and his eyes pleaded for my help.
"Everyone has a weakness, Agent One. Yours is seeing other people suffer. Especially, those who are close to you."
"I don't know him." I slowly reached for the gun in my holster, strapped to the right leg of my black combat pants.
"Ah, ah!" Constance pointed the end of her sharp knife into the back of my neck. "Drop the gun and raise your hands." She spoke in her strong, French Parisian accent.
Constance Decoux, was highly trained in all martial arts resolving the sword and an expert at knifes, she was not to be messed with, along with her younger sister Colette Decoux.
I dropped the gun onto the floor and I slowly raised my hands but not without insulting her first.
"Putain!" I spat at her in French and she scoffed angrily towards me.
She pressured the knife deeper into my neck and I hissed out through gritted teeth. I probably shouldn't have said that.
"Fils de salope!" She snapped back at me.
"That's enough with the French!" Knight shouted at us with an annoyed look. "Now where was I? Ah, that's right."
He tightened his grip on Danny, whose eyes grew wide with fear.
"You can say all you like about not knowing him, but the way your eyes met his as soon as I dragged him into the corridor, showed that you know each other. You don't just know him, he's a friend."
He pressured his knife harder against Danny's neck and my friend winced when the blade pierced through his skin and a trickle of red blood oozed out from the cut.
"Now give back the vial or I will kill your friend," Knight threatened.
I looked directly at Danny and I had never seen him so scared in his life. I did not plan for this situation. What was I supposed to do?
"Give him the vial!" Nikki was back online and I had never felt so relieved in my life. "The door to your left leads to an experimental laboratory with its own private fire exit. Do what you do best and cause a distraction. Check your time, you have ten minutes, I'll be on my way with backup."
Of course, the laboratory I had seen when undercover the other day. Why didn't I think of that?
My eyes flickered towards the door and I slyly smirked to myself. I could always count on Nikki to find me a way out whenever I was stuck. I now had the perfect plan.
"I'll do what you want just please don't hurt him!" I started my convincing act.
"No, don't do it!" Danny cried.
Knight slowly took the knife away from my friend's throat and nodded towards Constance. She took her knife away from the back of my neck and took the vial out from my bag.
I slowly reached for my knife, hidden under my bag and just as she passed the vial to Knight, and all the guards were distracted by the transaction. In one swift movement, I kicked the vial out from her hand, threw the knife at the chest of the other guard stood behind me and shouted at Danny to catch the vial.
I grabbed my gun from the floor and grabbed Danny by the collar and started shooting at Knight who dived out of the way before I could hit him.
"The door behind us, now!" I shouted at Danny.
Without question, he opened the door and I ran in after him and barricaded it with a chair but not fast enough to get shot in the leg. I bit down an agonising cry, not wanting to show any pain, I didn't want Danny to worry.
I breathed in slowly and ripped the bandana off from my face and glared at him.
"What the hell are you doing here?"
I limped around the laboratory and started turning on all the gas taps with Danny following me.
"What am I doing here? What are you doing here, with the guns, and the fighting, and the speaking in french? Who are you and why did he call you Agent One?"
"I am not explaining myself until you tell me why you are here?"
"I followed you!" He shouted at me. "You've been disappearing all month, so I wanted to find out what it was you were up to. Because I know you weren't going out drinking. Right now, seeing all of this... I wish it was just you getting wasted at a bar..."
His voice trailed away when he sniffed the air, then looked down at me and finally noticed what I was doing.
"What the hell are you doing?"
"What does it look like I'm doing?" I turned on the last gas tap in the room.
"Trying to get us killed!"
"More like saving our lives!" I smiled with approval. "Come on, this way!"
I dragged him towards the fire exit, with a limp but when I slammed my body against the door the handlebar wouldn't budge.
"Enigma, it looks like I'm going to have to go with the emergency exit plan. Be prepared for a crash landing!" I tightened the straps of my bag.
"I'm on my way and don't set the building on fire when you leave, Agent Miller's orders."
"I'm not promising anything!" I smiled to myself with a plan even Nikki didn't know about.
I limped over towards the window and smashed the corner of the glass with the butt of my gun and placed it back into my holster. I looked out of the window and down to the street below. We were high enough, this could work.
"Do you still have the vial?"
I turned back around to face Danny and he slowly nodded his head.
"Good! Keep a hold of it for me, and whatever you do, don't let the vial smash!"
I quickly grabbed an empty decoy vial from the laboratory workbench and grabbed onto Danny and walked over to the smashed window.
"Okay, on the count of three, we're going to jump out of this window!"
"WHAT?!" Danny screamed and I only smirked at him.
"One..." I grabbed ahold of Danny and jumped out of the window just as Constance barged her way through the door, shooting at use.
The room exploded behind us, projecting the both us further forward than I anticipated and taking me off corse but I could deal with that. I could hear the fire alarms going off in the building and the sound of Constance screaming in agonising pain.
I had to blow that room up, it was where they were creating the virus and all accounts of it had to be destroyed.
Danny started screaming his lungs out, while I couldn't help but laugh at his reaction. I pulled on the cord string, which was connected to the strap of my bag, and a parachute shot out from a compartment in my lucky bag.
A rush of air flew past my face and whipped my hair into my eyes as we base jumped. The entire time Danny was still screaming as I gripped onto him tightly.
We landed with a thud and I made sure to smash the decoy vial just as Nikki drove up the road. This was the only chance to hide the last vial in existence.
"Danny, promise me you will keep a hold of that vial for me, hide it in a place no one would ever think to look for it and don't let anyone know you have it. Do you understand me?"
He nodded his head immediately without question.
Nikki stepped out of the car along with Agent Miller, the boss of the agency I worked for and a complete asshole.
During the time I had made my escape, the boss had managed to corner off both ends of the street to stop any civilians from entering, to make sure everything was hush-hush from the public.
He marched up towards me with a stiff upper lip and an up turned face. More black cars parked behind him and agents marched out of their vehicles and headed into the building to arrest James Knight. At least the back up came, better late than never.
"Agent One, I thought I told you not to blow the facility up!" he shouted at me and looked at the smoking building, alarms still blaring away.
"Technically, it was Mademoiselle Constance Decoux who set the trigger off." I smirked, then flinched from the sudden sharp pain in my leg from the shot wound.
He glared at me. "This is not funny, Agent One. We needed as many samples of that bioweapon we could get our hands on!"
I looked at him sharply. "So the department can make a weapon out of it and use it against our enemies and kill thousands of innocent lives in the process. I saw the plans in your office back in Langley."
Miller's upturned lip trembled with anger.
"That is a securely locked office, which is impenetrable without the correct security measures, how did you get in?"
"I penetrated it with my dick that's how!" I yelled at him and I heard Danny snigger from my classic response.
At least my friend was smiling again and not trembling with fear. After what happened to him with Knight, I wouldn't be surprised if he had nightmares for the next couple of weeks as a result.
Miller looked at him, after finally noticing that he was stood there and looked back at me.
"The vial please." He lowered his temper slightly but still looked back at Danny suspiciously.
"It smashed when I landed." I pointed to the glass on the floor. "Bye, bye virus. Well, it looks like no one is going to be tampering with it for now, which I think is for the best."
Millervwas fuming and full of anger, which unfortunately he channelled all on Danny, the poor guy. He'd been through hell tonight, now Miller had to yell at him.
"Who is he?" He pointed his finger at a very confused Danny.
"Just a civilian who got mixed up in it all."
"Hi!" Danny smiled, with a small wave of his hand and I elbowed him to shut up.
Miller's eyes turned to slits as he looked suspiciously between the two of us.
"Agent Kane, who is he?" he ordered.
I pleaded with Nikki, with my eyes, not to say anything but I knew her all too well. She stuck by the rules, which I couldn't really complain about. Her non rule breaking had saved my life plenty of times, which had made her the best partner I'd ever had while working for the agency.
"He's called Danny Clyde. He is the guitarist of Lost Dreams and a friend of Guy's."
My heart sunk and Nikki gave me her apologetic eyes. With eyes like those, I couldn't be mad with her, she was only doing her job.
"So you bring your friends on missions now? The board will hear about this!" He gave me a deceitful smile and I scowled at him.
"He followed me. I didn't know he was here but you should be happy because now you have a key witness to use against James Knight, no harm done. In fact, it's all in your favour. Now, would you excuse me, my friend has a bleeding neck, my leg is bleeding out and we should be heading to a concert..."
I looked at my watch.
"Shit! We're half an hour late. Mikey is going to kill me." I looked at Nikki. "Can you drive me?"
"I can drive, my car is right around the corner." Danny pointed in the direction of his car.
"Sorry Danny, but Nikki is the best driver in the agency and I have a lot to explain to you on the way. Now, let's go!" I grabbed his collar and limped over to the car, then turned back to look at Miller.
"Don't bother with the board, I quit!" I threw my CIA badge onto the floor.
"You can't walk out on us, Guy Black!"
"Watch me!"
