When I woke up I was in a bed. For a second I thought I was just in my bed back at home and it was all a dream, I rolled over and snuggled into my blankets. These aren't my blankets.
This isn't my bed.
I shot up in the bed and looked around, it was a much darker and dirtier than my own. It was about the half size of a cheap motel room with a bed pushed to one corner, a single chair at a small table and an area to relieve myself on the opposite end with dusty, wooden floors. The "bed" I was sleeping on was actually an old cot and the sheets I was sleeping under were paper thin and had holes in it. When I looked down I saw that I was dressed in a cotton night gown.
How did I get into this?
They must have sensed something was different in here because a young vampire dressed like she was about to go to a business meeting came in with a dress draped over her arms. She didn't even bother to speak to me, simply threw the dress at me before closing the door and locking it behind her.
The moment the door was closed I rushed over to the door to see if it would budge. It was rickety and no doubt if I was Mike or Luke and had more muscle I'd be able to knock it down and escape.
Luke, where are you?
I looked down at the dress on the ground and studied it in the dingy light from a single window near the "bathroom". It was a simple off white dress with a bit of embroidery on the sides and bust that ended at about my knees. The sleeves were quite long even though they were just tank top straps and slid off my shoulders when I put it on. I pulled my hair over my shoulder to cover my mark.
Glancing down at my feet I saw that they were cleansed from the mud that encased the earlier. In fact, I was completely clean. Not an ounce of dirt was on my aside from what I'd accumulated from walking on the floors. My hair was even brushed out and dry.
I almost wanted to see what I look like but they hadn't left me a mirror. They'd only given me the bare essentials. No more and no less. I wasn't sure what to do so I just sat down at the table and waited.
_____
An hour later I was still sat in the same spot waiting, all of the dust and dirt had been cleaned off the table and swept onto the floor. I'd even wiped it off ever nook and cranny of the chair.
Why isn't anything happening?
I don't know, you'd think they'd come to talk to an "oracle".
Don't be like that.
You shouldn't have let them believe you were Nova. We shouldn't be here right now.
I couldn't let them take her. She's my sister.
That doesn't mean you can dispose of your own protection. Honestly, Holly, I can't believe you would make such a stupid choice.
It wasn't a choice. I had to do it.
I tuned her out before she could reply. She's impossibly to talk to when she's like this. Standing from the chair I was sat in I decided to make the bed.
If I'm being completely honest, I'm a bit of a clean freak. I don't like my room to be messy or disorganized and I don't like to be in dirty places. Being in here is enough to drive me mad alone with out adding in all the dust and grunge.
The bed was simple to make, I only had to straighten out the sheet, they didn't give me any pillows and the mattress itself was about as thick as my wrist. After that I looked at the bathroom area, there was nothing special in it. A toilet that I wouldn't use for all the money in Uncle Sam's pocket and a sink that looked like it hasn't been turned on since the Great Depression.
Neither worked.
I pressed my palm on the window to see if it would break, I'd already checked earlier to see if there was any chance of opening it and climbing out but I was about 10 stories up and there was no way I'm dying on my way out. The window didn't even crack. So much for a weapon. I settled for sitting on the window ledge when I'd dusted it off with my hand.
The sun was low suggesting that night would come soon. I sighed at the sight, even though I was trapped in here I had to admit that it was one of the best views I'd ever seen. There was icy snow everywhere and hills in the distance. It looked like something that King Arthur and his knights of the round table would journey to save his beloved Guinevere.
You read too many books.
I thought you were mad at me.
Yeah, we-
She was interrupted by the door slamming open. A tall vampire with dark hair and piercing grey eyes walked in, she was tall with a willowy figure dressed in an evening gown the same color as the one I wore to the party the other night. With her was a man with slicked back dark blond hair and hazel eyes in a purple button up shirt and black slacks. He had an old fashioned doctors bag on his shoulder but something seemed off about him.
Is it possible he just wants to check me for injuries?
She didn't reply to me. This is bad.
"Hello, Miss. Sterling. I am Hadley Willis and this is Wyatt Greyson. He will be running a few tests on you. I hope you don't mind."
"I do."
"Hopes are for manners and children, it wasn't a request. Please," she gestured to the chair at the table," Take a seat."
"He's not a vampire," I said instead. She smiled at me as if I was a preschooler.
"He isn't, you are correct. Now, take your seat."
"No, thank you."
She let out a sigh of despair and snapped her fingers. Two large vamps came in and took me by the arms. They pinned me to the bed and bound my wrists and ankles to the frame.
"Your cooperation is greatly appreciated," Hadley told me before walking out of the room with the two men in tow and Wyatt still in the room. He opened his bag and pulled out viles and needles and knives.
"Please, don't do this to me," I whispered. My fear wouldn't allow me to speak. He ignored my comment and put a needle in my arm, I felt myself getting weaker immediately.
"Don't worry, Nova. It's for science. It will all be worth it."
Before my sight left me I spotted the Aurora Borealis outside. Bright greens and dull blues merged with the ground and the stars danced right before I lost consciousness. Again.
