Oracle of Wolves

Jan 28, 2018

Sorry for all the POV swapping, but I want to be sure that you get what everyone thinks is going on.

Mike's POV

Have you ever had that feeling where you really, really wanted to punch something? Doesn't matter what. You just need to inflict pain upon something.

That's one and the same as the feeling that has been inflicted upon me from the moment that Tyler came into our territory and mated with Nova. My Nova. When he disappeared, I thought that it would let up.

Then she missed him.

One look at her face was enough to see that she wasn't happy. She wanted him. I thought that she was finally starting to get better, get over him. Luke said I should stop being a coward and talk to her.

"Tyler's gone, man, he's never coming back."

"Yeah," I retorted," And what if he does? Or, better yet, what if she never gets over him?"

"She will," he raised his beer and smiled at bit," Trust me."

I rubbed my temples in annoyance for a minute, thinking about it. What if she's still mad about my yelling at her? No, Nova's not like that. Likely she was never too upset anyway.

I decided that I should talk to her. I waited for a while, being the procrastinator I am, until she seemed at least a little bit happier with life. Going to her room in the morning was the easy part, the hard part was seeing him leaning against her bed frame watching her sleeping peacefully.

"What the hell are you doing here!?"

Nova jumped straight up, my screaming waking her immediately. She looked around frantically for a moment before Tyler put his hand on her ankle, the closest part of her to him. She stopped looking around and looked at him, a relieved smile on her face.

"Why are you here," I asked again, much quieter this time.

"I asked him to stay," Nova replied in a gentle voice, a vain attempt to calm me.

"I don't think that's a good idea," I turned to him," I want you out of my pack by sun down. No questions asked."

"But, Mike-"

"I said," I shouted at Nova, her whimper making me silence myself for a moment before softening my voice," No questions asked. I won't have a hybrid in my pack, their dangerous."

Nova looked on the verge of tears but Tyler just hung his head. He'd been expecting this, I can see it in his eyes.

I turned and left before Nova could say anything in the defense of her mate.

____

"I have no idea what you're talking about it."

Kian rolled his eyes at me before throwing his dart at the board. It's been almost 2 hours since I gave Tyler his eviction notice, in the meantime I decided to go down to the basement, aka the game room. Kian came down half an hour ago and decided to hang with me. He has this weird thing where it's almost like he can sense when I'm in a bad mood.

"You're being jealous for no reason," he replied simply," Having a mate isn't nearly as simple as you seem to think it is. It's- all consuming. You don't have any control over it, if I did then don't you think I would have chosen a girl who I hadn't grown up with? It was so weird in the beginning, Holly was like a sister to me and now she's my girl."

"It's not Impossible to reject your mate, though. It happens all the time," I retorted, annoyed with the blissful look on my little brother's face.

"Maybe, but it's a lot harder to reject them when you don't want to," he threw his last one, hitting a bull's eye," And Nova obviously doesn't want to reject Tyler."

"You just don't get it."

"What don't I get, Mike? The territorial feeling? I'm a wolf too, I get the same enhanced emotions you do. Not being in control? I'm the Alpha's second son, for god's sake! I'll always be a hairs width away from power but never able to grasp it. How about the jealousy? Holly wasn't exactly willing when we mated."

My brother stared at me with obvious fury standing just behind his black eyes. I took a deep breath, screaming at my baby brother isn't going to help the situation. I just need to put him in his place.

"You don't get being rejected."

He scowled and turned to leave, before exiting the door he craned his neck to face me.

"Apparently you've forgotten about Heather."

I blinked for a second. Heather was Kian's first girlfriend, a cute little thing but she turned out to be a traitor. She left him the moment she'd found out the information she needed, revealing her true identity and telling Kian her true feelings before leaving. It absolutely devastated him.

"I'm sorry, K-"

"Rule 1: Never apologize for something you aren't sorry for."

He shut the door and ran off. I sighed and sat down, knowing that I'd never catch him. The only one who had a chance of calming him down now was his mate. The rule he had said was a direct quote from what our father called "the rules of the alpha."

"Dumbass."

I looked up to see Joshua, my future Beta and best friend. He's very straight forward and honest, he says it like he sees it and is never sorry about what he says. I like that about him.

"Why do you always have to come at the wrong times?"

"Why do you always have to say the wrong things?"

"Good question."

"Even better one," he walked over to me and sat down," Why are you here instead of apologizing to Tyler and Nova?"

"Why in the hell would I apologize to Tyler," I asked my friend. He smiled widely at my dumbfounded expression.

"Why? To make Nova happy of course," he leaned in closer," And to prove that you are the bigger and better man."

"Better man, huh?"

The gears were all but grinding in my head. Nova is the typical oracle, all around good in every way but very hard to receive forgiveness from. She only wants the best for everyone unless they cross her. So if I were to apologize to Tyler and her, maybe invite Tyler to stay, then it would only be so long until he slips up and says something to Nova that she doesn't like.

"This could work," I muttered, turning to my best friend. I placed an overly dramatic kiss on his cheek and he wiped it away in disgust," I love ya, Joshy! You might just be my salvage."

He sneered at me for a second before throwing an arm around my shoulders and smiling.

"No problem, lover. You know I'd do anything for you," he held up a finger and added seriously," As long as I remain your main squeeze."

I laughed at him and pushed him off of me, jogging out of the room and breaking into a run at the stairs. I have to catch Tyler before he leaves or else I'll never get back into Nova's good gracious.

"You shouldn't be here," I whisper-yelled to him.

"I shouldn't," he agrees.

"I should let them kill you," I added as he began to walk slowly towards me.

"You should," he tucks a loose strand of hair behind my ear," But you won't."

I'm about to argue that I will when he brings his lips down to meet mine in a slow, thought-halting kiss. Then another. Then another.
____

Do you know what death is like? I do. I've lived through a million deaths a million ways, it's all the same. There is no angel standing next to you to help you up, no bright light, just a cold feeling followed by something I can only describe as numb. I can't complain though, I was born to see these things. I was born to see death and to stop it. That's what oracles do.
So when I foresee the death of the entire wolf race, I need to find a way to stop it. Only to find out that the one who ends the race is, in fact, my own mate. Can I find it in my heart to let him be killed? Or can I stop the end from coming another way?

This is part of a series, you can get by without reading the first book but be warned that it contains spoilers if you read the previous one later. Book 2.
