"Are you still spying on them?" Price whispered. The room we sat in was incredibly large, we had our own quarters but it was mandatory to stay inside this specific room on occasion. We sat atop the rafters of an equally incredibly large bed. Blade sat outside, on the balcony railings. I had been staring at them, examining their figure once more. I had noticed new details of their physique: their slim leather armor was fastened together using several silver buckles, they were well balanced; sitting on a ledge, suspended several hundred feet in the air and yet they would walk along the rail carefree.
"Why bother?" He asked.
"You didn't see what I saw."
"You don't even know what you saw!" Price turned to face Blade.
"You despise them because of their rank." I spoke.
"How does someone go from Private to Second in Command on their first day?!" Price's voice raised an octave. He pushed aside his dark, raven colored hair, it had been shaken when he expressed his anger.
"You're just envious because he knocked you down from Second." My eyes narrowed when I noticed Beast step into my sight. He began talking with Blade.
"Sorry, an opportunity cannot be wasted." I dropped from the bedframe and fell into the mattress. I quickly stepped off. My feet were no longer bare, I had acquired long black boots shortly after I joined the force. No more bruises. Not ever again. I stood by one of the set of doors, I focused my hearing on their words. I was unable to hear Blade, Beast's voice was loud enough for me to hear.
"Think, why would they have us locked in a room for the entire day? They are trying to hide something from us. We are the most dangerous people in this wasteland and yet we bow our heads to such weaklings as the the Queen?" His twisted words had some level of truth behind them. Our team could easily overthrow the kingdom but none of us wanted to rule a kingdom. We weren't concerned with the outside world anymore.
Blade spoke, their words were too quiet to travel to me.
"But that's just the thing: this place isn't good. I can't talk to the others, they don't get it. But you, you get it. You see the queen for what she is, I know you know she's not as good as everyone thinks..." A sudden silence was brought upon the scene.
"Why should we take orders from them? They don't care about us, you know the-" Beast froze.
"How do you?..." I caught on too late: Blade had sensed me. Beast sprinted around the corner. His clawed hand shot into my throat. Lifting me above the ground, he was enraged.
"What do think you're doing?" His sharpened claws began to dig into my throat. I was oddly calm in this moment for I knew I could end him in a second if need be. Slowly, a hand fell upon Beast's shoulder. The bandaged and wrapped appendage led back to Blade, who was gracefully making their way around the corner as well.
Blade's eyes examined me, they shrugged their shoulders and turned back to face the room. A new figure entered the room, it was the queen's General.
"Stop screwing around, you've gotten a new assignment." Beast dropped me, I slid to the round and began to gasp for the precious air.
"Only three of you will be going on this mission: Willow, Beast, and Blade." Beast's body grew tense.
"What's the mission?" Beast spoke up.
"A family is suspected of committing heinous acts against peace, your job is infiltrate and eliminate the guilty." The General answered.
"What are they guilty of?" Beast was unsatisfied with the answer given.
"Murder, kidnapping, and cannibalism!" The General had already been fed up with his nonsense. At this moment, Beast leaned over to blade and whispered into their cowl.
"See? Just like I said..."
"What reason do you have?" He asked.
"Your job isn't to ask why or what! It's to—“ “To blindly follow your orders? Not to ask questions. Do what we're told?" The General seemed to have lost the battle. Gritting his teeth, he backed out.
"Get ready. You're leaving tomorrow night." He left the room which now had an awkward atmosphere. Beast has had arguments before, short outbursts here and there, but never to the General. He only ever questioned the smaller ranks that couldn't answer; the easier ones to target.
"You were right." Blade whispered.
Like winds on the sea, their voice was cruel and cold; void of empathy and passion. By those few words I was now able to determine Blade's gender: male. He was a young male, maybe seventeen or so. His voice held a certain maturity that would match that of an elder yet had the lilt of youth. I had grown to become an expert in speech and yet his words gave me even more questions. Much like his eyes, they held a certain mystery to them that beckoned my curiosity.
An odd one this one was.
