Donnie barely slid his still wrecked converse over his feet before Kan, quickly followed by Corey, flew past him, backpacks rattling behind them as they raced out the front door. He heard a laughter-filled voice call through the door. “Come on, Sunshine, first through the front doors wins! You comin' or what?” Kan, perched in front of an already out of breath Corey, was sporting an almost overwhelmingly content smile.
Donnie had stuffed his pack in his locker, books and all, figuring he wouldn't need it, so without a weight over his back, he had a significant advantage in this race. He tied his off-white laces, and with a teasing grin and a single look up, he sprinted out the door, barely managing to close it behind him as he leaped over the wilted wooden stairs. His shoes skidded against the concrete sidewalk as he landed, darting ahead towards their shared highschool. The giggling from the two teenagers behind him brought a grin to the surface of the milky kid's face, the first in a while.
Kan had won the race. He may or may not have feigned an injury or two in order to get ahead of Donnie, but still, Kan had won the race. After Donnie scolded him for being a cheater, the three entered the school. Students stared, their faces recognizable as the ones pressed against the cafeteria glass. One girl in particular was especially creepy, eyeing Kan with a toothy snarl. She had long, raven hair, half tied up with a ribbon. Either not noticing, or ignoring their gazes entirely, Corey trotted ahead, turning around to talk to his friends, leaving himself to navigate through the crowds backwards. “Let's go, the wondrous room of knowledge awaits us!”
“Wondrous room of knowledge” should have been the first hint that these two were complete geeks but as Donnie followed the two to the library, picking up his backpack on the way, it didn't quite cross his mind. Corey led the way, acting as their Sherpa, pushing through long tables and chairs before they arrived at the far corner of the library. They led him to the corner of the library, currently looking at the edge where two bookcases connected. Donnie was very confused and he knew it showed on his face. The broad smile that Kan flashed him certainly didn't help as Corey made his way up the shelf, crouching atop the maroon case before dropping behind it, disappearing from sight. Donnie stood, wide-eyed, somehow further confused. Kan gestured towards the case, offering Donnie the honor of going first. After standing there, just shocked for a minute, Donnie shrugged a little aggressively, taking his turn up the thick shelves. The view from the top of the case was oddly interesting, gazing over the people below made him feel a little like a giant. Kan was waiting for him to move ahead, settling at the top of the surface. So, with a faintly scared expression, Donnie jumped into the space between the shelf and the beige wall. After successfully landing on his feet, Donnie was met with a door shaped tunnel. Well, it'd be door shaped if you were a hobbit. With a look back to Kan at the top of the bookshelf, he made his way through the tunnel. The tunnel wasn't very long, only slightly thicker than a wall, so he was quickly faced with a navy blue blanket, serving as a curtain. Pulling the cloth over, Donnie got the first view of their hideaway. The space was fairly small, posters of movies as old as they were lined the entirety of the barely square room, the pasty white drywall underneath hardly visible. Two bean bags lied against the far wall, a small, dusty side table not far next to it. A Darth Vader headlamp stood proud and tall on the small wooden thing, the eyes of the lamp a glowing red. The blanket that covered the doorway turned out to be covered in space ships, and Donnie wouldn't expect anything less from these two. A rug lied in front of the bean bags, an old, brown thing that definitely wasn't a part of either of their design. The hardwood squeaked under strain, the room obviously quite old. An oval-shaped section of polished wood took it's place right atop the space themed rug, serving as a coffee table, covered in figures and magazines. Donnie wondered how the hell they got all this down here. Corey plopped himself on the "coffee table", somehow avoiding crushing any of the contents on top.
“Welcome to La Fort Te Chaotic!”
“-La Fort Te Chaotic?” It was official. His friends were the biggest geeks in the history of existence.
“Came to me in a dream.” Kan chimed in, striding into the room and placing himself in the lime green bean bag.
Donnie admired the space for a bit, lifting small knickknacks placed around the small space to study them. It was quite admirable, what they'd done with such an odd room. He picked up one of the comics lying on the wood-rimmed, glass table. 'MARVEL: ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN ISSUE 002'. With a snort, he took a final sweep of the room before looking to the older kids with a side grin.
“It's a pretty impressive set up, I gotta say.”
Neither had the chance to accept the praise, because a shout came from outside their now mutual hobbit hole, leaving the room quiet to listen in on the upset soul behind the bookshelves.
“God, don't cry, please don't cry, you're so goddamn pathetic – you fucked up bad this time, you're a fucking monster – but this isn't the first time, right, idiot-? -You always do this, you're such a fuck-up – she hates me now doesn't she-? God, how couldn't she? Fuck!”
The three's eyes shifted between eachother, as if deciding who should go out there first, or if they should go out there at all.
“She'll never forgive me for this – she thinks I'm a freak!”
Out of impatience, Donnie's small form shoved Kan through the blue blanket, forcing him to leave first, the others following not too far behind. He peeked his head over the dark maroon bookcase, revealing the sun-kissed girl, a distressed look taking over most of her face. Her thin, chin length and coffee colored hair swayed as she frantically paced back and forth in the small corner of the library, a gray beanie wrapping most of her skull. The crappy light in the room barely gave her olive skin, obviously of Hispanic nature, any justice. She wore a jean jacket, one side hanging off of her shoulder a bit, slipping off even more as her distraught pace back and forth quickened. Underneath was a rose patterned tank top, lace lining the top and bottom hem. Fish nets trapped her long legs, only visible through the rips in her blue jeggings. The white, fluffy orbs that hung from her shoelaces flopped against her dusty brown boots, her hands running through her hair as she paused against the case, appearing on the brink of a complete breakdown. Corey and Donnie soon joined their friend, Donnie on Corey's back in order for him to see properly. Kan thought about how much of a struggle Corey probably went through to convince Donnie to let him do that. The girl mumbled to herself, currently banging her head against the bookcase she'd been steadying her weight on minutes ago, forearms placed on either side of her face.
Kan spoke first, quiet and hesitant. “..Are you alright-?”
She startled to her feet, searching around for the voice before her sight caught on the three boys. Her body heaved, brown eyes wide. “-Shit, where the hell did you come from-”
She stumbled back a bit, head in her hands. “Fuck, I'm sorry, I didn't know anyone was back here, I can't-”
That's all she wheezed out before she bolted away from them. They saw her leave the library with her face hidden in her arm from their place on top of the shelves.
“Well, that went great.”
Kan punched Corey's shoulder, almost knocking Donnie off of his back. The freshman scowled, prepared to punch Kan as well. Kan retreated back a little, before escaping over the top of the bookcase.
