The girl worked through the day, arranging the books within the small hospital they worked in. Despite her working in medicines for villagers during the later evenings, she wasn't entrusted with the actual healing of people; that job was left to the senior nurse, Nurse Reeno, the elderly lady who often spent most her time teaching the girl how to do her job. During the girls earlier years, it was obvious that the fear of the the girls curse concerned the old nurse, however as years went by it seemed that Nurse Reeno had become a bit more tolerable of the girl and lowered her superstitions. The job was an apprentice nurse was pretty tricky at times, however the girl found some peace, being able to study medicines on her own within the hospital...
However the peace within the small hospital as of late, had begin to stir, as the girl's attention drifted to the small group that had appeared by the door of the main room, other young apprentices and nurses peering inside concerned as the girl tilted her head to them.
"Ah... it's another type of that case..." a young nurse whispered as another shook their head.
"Stage four also... How awful..." she noted as the girl found herself straying from her studies, getting iff her seat and walking over to the door curiously.
"Do you really think head nurse is okay to be around a case so severe?" Another nurse questioned as the first gave an uncomfortable expression to those words.
"Unfortunately, with something like this it's a risk we must take..." the first mentioned-
"What is it?" The girl in the mask questioned as all of the nurses and the two small apprentices jumped back from the door, looking to the girl who now stood by them and the door, a look of freaked paranoia on their faces.
"Ah- y-you..." the one stammered nervously as the girl took a long stare at them... before she turned to the door, dictating that if she wanted answers she was going to have to look for herself... "hey-wait-" the nurse went to stop her, however she retracted her hand as quick as she went to stop the girl, a grimace appearing on her face...
The girl peered into the small crack through the doorway, looking in to the wooden room that had mostly been dug into the dirt by the small hillside in which it stood. The head nurse paced about, circling around a small wooden desk in which a figure wearing heavy clothes sat at...
"Beyond this point, there is nothing we can do to slow down the symptoms... my guesses is that you only have a month left..." Nurse Reeno told the figure seriously as the girl watched silently on, realising that the situation in which she had just tuned in to was pretty dire... There was a pandemic going round the village?
"Please Nurse... There has to be something you can do for me? I'm the only one my children have left..." a man rasped weakly from the figure as the old nurse turned her head away from the man with a pitiful expression, unable to give any sort of solace to the man, this silence only causing the man to panic more. "Please Nurse! Anything, please save me- Ah- AHH-" the man's pleads slowly began to change as he raised his arm, his words transforming into horrified gasps. Before then- "ARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH" - The man let out an ear piercing wail that made the girl jump, as she watched something tear out of the skin of his arms like vines, before it began coiling around the very arm it ripped out of in a large coiling mask, the man giving out loud cries of pain. The girl could only watch on mortified, backing up from the crack in the door slightly, as she then noticed the nurses beside her giving looks of distress, the cries beginning to die down. This was not anything like the girl had ever seen before... Did everyone else in this building know about this illness? The girl gulped a little, before she then looked through the doorway again...
And as she did, she found herself greeted by a sharp hazel eye staring straight back at her, the sight if this eye causing the girl to make a cry as she stu, bled backwards, this cry in itself only panicking the nurses more... it was then however that the door opened, revealing Nurse Reeeno to be stood there, staring back at the girl with a disapproving expression.
"And how, do you count this as studying?" The nurse asked sharply as the girl placed her hand to her chest, trying to catch her breath... When she then looked back to the head nurse who was now glaring at the girl.
"I-I was just..." the girl stammered, looking over to the other nurses, who were already back at their stations...When she lowered her head a little."I'm sorry... I have been studying, honest..." the girl went on, cupping her hands together and lowering her head as the old lady raised an eyebrow at her. It was then the girls grip on her hands tightened as she quickly raised her head to Nurse Reeno.
"I just wanted to know, what kind if illness that man had for study!" She the explained onwards, before twiddling with her fingers... "afterall... I have never seen an illness like that before..." the girl went in as the head nurses gazes of suspicion on her began to die down somewhat... Nurse Reeno then turned away from the girl.
"It's nothing that an apprentice nurse like you should get involved with..." nurse Reeno made it clear as the girl twitched to Nurse Reeno's words... But even still... she looked over to the other apprentices who were eavesdropping by the door... She had a feeling that she was the only one left in the dark about this. "Enough messing around, get back to studying..." Nurse Reeno then hurried the girl along as she watched the nurse leave the room silently, not arguing with her commands... Besides... That illness looked like something even she couldn't ignore...
"I'll be leaving now mam..." the girl told Nurse Reeno later that evening, putting on her shoes by the door as Nurse Reeno nodded, sorting through some books on her desk beside a light blue candle light. The girl stared at the old woman, her focus drifting to the examination room door... The patient with the strange illness earlier had long since left, leaving the building completely wrapped in a shawl... She didn't get a clear look at the mans face upon him existing, but it seemed that she had definitely caught his attention upon his leaving... He even directed some short words towards her...
"I guess we are on in the same huh..."
The girl was now transfixed on that door, not saying another word... what was that exactly meant to mean...?
"It is best that the young don't let their minds stray where they are not needed..." Nurse Reeno cut the girl out of her trance, the girl flinching at the old ladies words... Before she then turned her head away from the door.
"Y-yes... I'm sorry..." the girl nodded, turning to the small shelf in the side, grabbing her bag. Nurse Reeno kept her eyes on the girl, watching her finish off getting ready, before she gave a slightly unsettled expression...
"You know, tonight is the brightest the night sky will have been in thirteen years..." nurse Reeno mentioned as the girl paused in getting ready, turning back to the nurse... "You were found upon the last time the night sky was like this... Be sure to truly take it all in. Who knows when you shall see it again..." the old woman mentioned as the girl remained silent to these words, seeming to think a bit more about what they brought up...Before a small shy laugh came from behind her mask as she nodded.
"I'll be sure to..." She responded as the nurse then simply replied with a nod. Going back to her books.
"Then be safe on your way home tonight... And at scavenging tonight..." she told the girl as the girl went to reply with her own farewells. When quite suddenly the door at the front of the small clinic opened.
In walked in a rather tall old man, with a rather thick white beard. Hid head was balding, the remaining on his head retreating to that of his beard as his light blue eyes with a scar upon the directed themselves at Nurse Reeno. Unlike most of the other villagers, his attire seemed a bit more luxurious, a tunic embezzled with gold and a large red cape drooped over his shoulders. Behind him followed two servants dressed in capes of their own. Nurse Reeno seemed just as dazed as the girl was at first... Before he expression softened as she went back to sort her books.
"Head chief... I was not expecting you to arrive so early..." Nurse Reeno mentioned as the village leader's expression remained rather firm.
"Yes well, quite a bit has happened. There's much we need to discuss..." the village leader replied as Nurse Reeno shut her one book, giving a small sigh.
"And here I was hoping that I could take in some of the skies light tonight... But very well, I was just closing up anyway..." Nurse Reeno responded as the leader's eyes narrowed faintly in thought.
"The brightest sky huh...?" He muttered, his eyes now turning to the young girl, who backed up a bit upon being noticed by him. It was then that the village leader turned his attention back to nurse Reeno, walking inside fully. "Let us hope that this time, the goddess leaves us with a blessing... Heavens know we need one..." he added, both he and his followers now entering the building and following Nurse Reeno to the examination room. The girl quietly walked over to the front entrance herself as soon as they had left, before leaving, she took a moment to watch them enter the other room, a tinge of curiosity seeming to ride through her stare... However, it was then that she pulled her backpack onto her shoulders firmly, leaving the clinic without any words...
The flames of a fire crackled quite fiercely as they made it their task to not only cook the food boiling in the cast iron pot above it, but also give warmth to the room. In the other room dimly lit by light blue glowing candles, there came the sloshing of water, suds flowing along with the water that fell among the stony floor, trickling down into holes at the side of the room. The girl stood amongst it, the darkness of the room mostly obscuring her. Her mask lay by the door just outside of this room, as she reached for a small rag upon the small seats engraved into the wooden walls of this shack. A handkerchief tied around her head as she started to dry off...
The evening was always quiet in this house now, the girl sitting by the fire with her stew, letting the fires hest dry off her hair for her as she raised up her mask slightly to eat. It was such a strange atmosphere this building gave that this girl had only gotten used to as she proceeded to eat...
'You know, tonight is the brightest the night sky will be in thirteen years...' Nurse Reeno's words rang through her mind as she faintly recalled a memory sitting before this fire, a man chuckling in the chair before her, rubbing his hands together.
"You were the blessing we received on a starriest of nights!" The man chimed, before with the crackle of the fire next to her, the image of his memory broke away, flowing away like the smoke coming from the fire.
The girl out down her stew, remaining silent, when she then looked to the door, a bright otherworldly glow shining across the land in which lay within her view of the windows outside... It was then that she got to her feet...
There was very little need for her to go out scavenging this night, she had already got plenty of supplies, from her hunt the night before. However it was as Nurse Reeno had said, it was best to take in the views of this night. And there was no better way to truly do that, then to go out exploring. The girl now stood at the door, her backpack back on her back, and a lantern over her shoulder, giving off a light blue light just as all the other lights had. She held a small purple sphere within a silver made box within her hands, flicking it a little as it gave of a small purple glow, sparkling a little when she gave a confident expression, heading out the door... Nights like these were said to be a blessing, so she was hoping to find something truly wondrous...
