“Garcìa! Meet me in my office, now!”
Dalian froze where he was and turned to face his superior, “Yessir!” He shouted back, standing straighter and saluting. “Be right up, commander Imari.”
“You better be,” Imari growled, sending shivers down the newbies backs. He may seem scary, Dalian thought, smiling, but he had been working under Imari since he had first started out at D.B.S., The Department of Supernatural Beings, and he knew it was all just for show. Eventually, so would the rest of the recruits.
He gathered his things and walked up the short flight of stairs to Imari’s office. He opened the door to find the large, dark man, grinning wildly at him. “Come, sit,” Imari gestured to the hard wooden chair opposite of his. He spoke with a lilting African accent, a remnant of his childhood in Burundi, before he immigrated over in his early 20’s.
Dalian sat down, “How are you, Imari, how're the kids?”
Imari’s eyes lit up like they always did when talking about his twin girls, “Wonderful, little Ada just started ballet practice, and Kali got 2nd place in her spelling bee.” His smile dropped and he became serious, “But we aren't here to talk about me, we're here, to talk about you.”
Dalian smiled nervously, “Er, sure sir, what's up?”
Imari leaned in as if suspicious someone was listening in, “You remember how I used to work as a security guard for the Valstorms?”
Dalian knotted his brows, “Um, yeah, what about it?”
Imari frowned, “I need you to keep this on the down low, but,” he leaned closer and whispered, “Mr. and Mrs. Valstorm were found dead in their beds this morning.”
“What?!” Dalian exclaimed.
“Shhh!” Imari hissed, “I said to keep it on the down low!”
Dalian blushed, “Sorry, I just- What happened?”
Imari rubbed the bridge of his nose and leaned back in his chair, “Strangled, both of them.” He raised his hand, stopping Dalian from asking his next question, “We don't know exactly what went down, but you remember their kid, Robert, right?”
Dalian nodded, “Yeah, wasn't he the one who ended up having Telekinesis or something, so they took him away to check him out a few years back?”
Imari nodded, “Turns out, he escaped the facility about a week ago, they suspect he killed them as revenge.”
“Revenge? Revenge for what?”
“For giving him to the DSB. For not trying to get him back, we don't know. Anyway, uncommon knowledge is, the Valstorms also had a younger daughter.”
“What?” Dalian was confused, “I never knew that, how did such a big family like them keep that a secret from the public?”
“It was difficult, but they did. I only know because I met her while working there.”
Dalian whistled, “Wow, this is...wow. So what does she have to do with anything?”
“They think Robert might target her next. And that's where you come in.”
“Me?”
Imari nodded, “Some old friends who were working the case alerted me. They want to protect her from Robert, but also the DSB. I can't go take care of her because I have to run this building, so I decided I'd ask my best officer to take the mission for me.”
Dalian was shocked, “You mean, you want me, to guard Ms. Valstorm?”
Imari nodded and pushed a small file over to Dalian, “Her name is Alexandra, she's living in a college dorm near Pitt currently. She’s going by a fake name, Allie Forthwall, so keep that in mind. She also doesn't know about her brothers escape and her parents death. We wanted to keep this out of the news for as long as possible. Here, this file has some info on the both of them.”
Dalian flipped through it and frowned, “It's rather short.”
Imari sighed, “Yeah, like I said, Alex was kept on the down low, and the DSB doesn't like to divulge too much info on their, ‘patients’.”
Dalian nodded, “Yeah, that sounds like them. So, when do you want me to leave?”
“Immediately. We don't know how close Robert is to Alex right now, so she needs protection effective immediately, understood?”
Dalian nodded, “Understood sir.” He stood up, “I’ll leave now.”
Imari nodded, “Good, and Dalian?”
“Yes?”
Imari smiled sadly, “Be careful, I don't want to lose my best officer and friend.”
Dalian smirked, his dark eyes twinkling, “Don't worry Imari, I'm not the best for nothing.”
And with that, he turned, and walked out the door.
