“Get up.”
“Get up, get up.”
“We need to go. Now.”
My ears were still ringing and my vision blurry. Stop yelling at me.
“Get up! We have to go. Now!”
Oh my god stop yelling! Can’t he see the ground is upside down? I can’t get up when the world is down.
“What are you… ?” Hmm, that's weird, I can’t seem to make my mouth and my brain work together.
“Fine, I’m going to carry you. Just stay calm.”
He lifts me up with a deceptively strong grip. With everything spinning, it was difficult to keep my head up. At least when I was on the ground I was spinning with it. Now everything seems to be orbiting me. I will probably vomit soon.
“You’re probably about to puke. Please don’t. We have to get going.”
He started dragging me along. My feet wanted to move in a similar direction, but they just couldn't seem to agree which way that is.
“I’m going to take you to your place. Do you think you can stay awake to help me get you there?”
“Hands… I will… Yes… Where are… Squeezing, okay?” Still not able to get full sentences out. I wanted to tell him that he’s squeezing me a bit too tight but it’s all just a jumble.
“Hmm, a slight concussion too. Just stay with me.”
He seemed sure of himself. But why was I on the ground? And why would I have a concussion? What just happened? What is that crumpled shape on the other side of the alley?
Oh right, that heap on the ground was actually a man. Or what looked like a man. He attacked me. But why did he attack me? He was very large and angry. Like really angry. I remember walking past him, hearing a sudden clank as something metallic hit the ground, then loud ringing.
I remember the right side of my face exploding in pain, my feet struggling for purchase with the ground only to be denied. I remember the grit from the bricks rubbing my skin raw as I slid down. The smell of urine as the wet alleyway came up to meet me.
Actually, how did he manage to defeat that monstrosity? Why was he here now? Was he following me? None of this was making any sense. We had a terrible coffee date and now he's saving my life? He knows karate or something?
Everything was definitely jumbled in my head right now.
"Look, we're gonna keep moving this way. Can you at least try and lift feet?"
"WHO ARE YOU!" I said way too loudly, but my head was pounding and I was very annoyed at how forceful he was being right now.
"It's me, Ben," he said as if I didn't recognize him.
"NO WHY... why were you here? What... was that thing?" I demanded.
"I can explain when we get you home and out of danger," he said continuing to drag me along.
I didn't try to argue with him at that moment. My head still hurt and talking actually made it worse. So I concentrated on how to move my feet. I also ignored the fact that he was taking me directly to my place as if he'd been there before. Which for the record was very weird.
