My eyes snapped open when I heard the door to my room open and close quietly. It was dark outside and the room was pitch black. I heard footsteps shuffle on the other side of the room. I hadn't been imagining the sound. I sat bolt-right in my bed, the teddy bear slid off my chest and landed next to me. I searched the room, looking for who could be inside. I nearly screamed when I saw Ghost standing in the corner; he moved quickly across the room and clasped against my mouth. Ghost brought a finger up to his lips, the universal sign to stay quiet.
"They're in the house." Ghost didn't need to explain, I knew what he was talking about. The undead had broken through the door down stairs. Slowly, he lifted his hand off my mouth and went to working on the window. Quickly and quietly, I pulled on my shoes, and grabbed my pole by the door before returning to Ghost's side. My eyes strayed towards the where the teddy bear now laid and without a second thought, I scooped the bear up and held it close to my chest. It was like innocents lost, never to be found again.
Ghost pried open the window. He pushed himself out before turning back to me. He looked from me to the bear and gave me a quizzical look.
"What's with that? are you ten?" he moved back so I could climb through the window.
I glared at him, but I kept the bear close to my chest as I followed him along the roof of the house. We reached the tree where Ghost had shimmed up earlier today; he stepped across the thinner branches, checking if they held. He turned to help me across. I tucked my shirt down into my pants before shoving the bear down the neckline. I took Ghost's out-stretched hand and he pulled me to him. I would have slipped off entirely if he hadn't grabbed my elbow to keep me steady. From here, I could hear the moans and groans of the undead from inside the house. From my spot in the tree, I could see that there were still a lot of zombies still trying to shove their ways inside.
Ghost leaned closer to my ear and whispered, "We'll have to go around them. There's a lot more than I had expected." for a second, I thought I saw a flicker of doubt flash before his eyes, but as soon as it was there, it was gone.
