I walked over to the literature section and ran my fingers along the bindings.
"I love the smell of books." I said smiling still walking a long the book shelf.
He smiled watching me.
"Admit it. You think I'm strange." I peaked over my shoulder at him.
"No," he said shaking his head, "I'd say you were interesting, not strange. Not what I'd expect really."
"Good." I smirked, "I'll just keep you guessing and surprised I guess."
"Maybe." He nodded.
I stopped grazing my hands across the books when I reached Anne Rice. I pulled out one of the books, one I haven't read before.
"Anne Rice," he asked, "You're into Vampires?"
"Werewolves actually. But I appreciate genius when I see it." I said peaking at him. "Ever read her stuff?" I asked handing the book to him. He took the book and looked it over.
"Not, really." He confessed
I turned to fully look at him this time, "You make me sad."
He laughed
"Do I amuse you?" I teased reaching over to nudge his arm.
"A little, yes." He nudged me back.
When I finally chose a book, I purchased it and we decided to walk to the park and sit for a while.
"So, are you going to Ottawa?" He asked.
"Of course. I'm looking forward to it." I said
Every year the Animation Senior class got to go to the huge animation/film festival in Ottawa, Canada. It's pretty much a requirement, all expenses paid by the school. So there is no excuse not to go. It's awesome. You get to meet some of the artists, there are parties and more.
"Who are you rooming with?" He asked
"Well it was supposed to be Lesly and Sara, but last minute they told me they had no room." I sighed, "So, I'm rooming with Matt and a couple of other people. I'll have Maggie with me too. Thank God."
"That was pretty shitty of them." He said.
"Yeah, well I don't think Lesly likes Maggie very much." I said pulling at a piece of grass.
"Why?" He asked.
"She doesn't think Maggie is a very good friend, and I don't know?" I shrugged. "I guess she's a little too wild for their taste." I confessed tossing the blade of grass.
"Still pretty crappy and kind of hypocritical. Don't you think?" He said.
"What do you mean?"
"Well isn't Lesly being a crappy friend ditching you?"
"It's alright," I said laying back into the grass, "Not everyone can handle Maggie's no BS personality. Who are you rooming with?"
"Andy, and a couple of the guys."
The name shot through my spine like a lightening rod.
Andy.
"Oh?" I asked "I thought for sure you'd be rooming with Derek."
"No, he's bring his girlfriend. They're getting their own room."
"Oh," I said still staring at the sky.
"I didn't know you and Andy hung out."
" We don't really." He said laying down beside me, "He had space available, and needed a couple of roommates."
I felt like I could breathe a little again. "So they aren't close," I thought. But I still wondered if Andy ever told anybody about us. It wasn't something I was proud of, and it still stung a little. Especially, when Andy still wanted to remain good friends, in our small department. It was something we just didn't talk about again. It was like we never happened. To be honest there wasn't really a "we". It was more like a, “well that happened."
"Hey, are you okay?" Daniel asked waving a hand in front of my face.
"Oh yeah, hi. I sort of zoned out for a bit."
"Yeah, your phone is ringing." He pointed to my pocket.
"Oh crap, sorry." I said
I sat up and pulled out the phone.
Maggie it blinked
"Hey, what's up?" I answered. "Sorry" I mouthed to Daniel.
He waved his hand away.
"So, are you in love yet?" Maggie teased
"Are you getting out of work soon?" I asked
"Do you want to marry him?" She kept going
"Yeah, maybe I'll go home tonight instead." I sassed
"Don't be a bitch!" She laughed, "No, you're coming out with me! And you're going to tell me everything."
"Okay, what time am I meeting you at the station?"
"Well, I get out in about 5 mins. Start heading to the train and I'll be there by the time you do." She guessed.
"I won't be there for about 45 mins. If I walk fast, and catch the first train."
"Sounds good babe." She responded, "love you."
"Love you too."
I hung up the phone.
"So is this where we end today?" Daniel asked
"Yeah, I guess it is. Especially when Maggie is my ride tonight." I shrugged
"Okay, well. This was fun." He said standing up.
I stood up and brushed the grass from my jeans.
"Yeah it was." I said
"We'll have to hang out when classes start and in Ottawa."
"Yeah, definitely." I nodded. "Well I have to go this way."
"Okay, I'm heading back to school, Derek just moved back into the dorms."
"Alright." I said nodding.
I reached out to give him a hug. It would have been really awkward if he didn't hug me back, but he did. And not just one of those loose little hugs. He gave me a real hug, and I just melted into his spiciness. Literally melted. What gives this guy the right to smell this good. Like Irish Spring soap and something I couldn't quiet put my finger. Just, yummy boy.
“Well, okay.” I said “Bye”
“See you later.”
And we parted ways, but not before I peaked over my shoulder and sure enough he was still watching me walk away.
He smiled and waved
