We climbed our way down from the tree, careful not to alert the flesh-hungry dead where we were. We paused at the side of the house; from where I was, I could see all the undead that were still coming towards the house. Ghost nudged my shoulder, "We'll go around them. Follow me." and he didn't wait for me to reply, he was already silently skirting around the large horde. I followed as closely and as quietly as I could. My heart hammered in my chest and would jump to my throat every time I thought one of them heard us.
We had almost made it to the tree line when everything seemed to go to shit. Ghost and I hid behind a small flipped over car and just passed the was a wide gap before the tree-line.
Ghost turned to me, his hands tightened the strap that kept his rifle to his back.
"I'll go first. Wait here and I'll tell you when to go." His voice was barely above a whisper. I nodded and he turned away from me. Ghost paused for a moment before sprinting to the cover of the trees. I stared intently at him; the sun was just barely rising over the horizon, making Ghost look like a person made of shadows.
With sweaty palms, I readjusted my grip on my pole, waiting for Ghost's signal that it was all clear. When he did give the signal, I got jumpy and when I got into a crouch, the pole in my hands banged against the car's door. A loud ring from metal hitting metal rang through the air and for a terrible second the chorus of moaning stopped, before starting up again, this time louder and with more intent. From across the gap, I saw Ghost stand, cup his hands around his mouth and yell, "Run, Red! Run!"
The moans grew louder and I didn't let myself hesitate any longer. I pushed myself to my feet and made a break for the tree-line. I looked back as I ran and I knew Ghost and I were really in deep. The undead grew larger than I could ever imagine; undead filled the streets, they were clumped together like sardines and now they were all coming after us!
Ghost and I ran through the woods, dodging around trees and fallen branches, trying to get as far as possible from the horde. We ran until we came to a clearing, and placed right in the middle was a large, three-story reinforced jungle gym.
"Get to the jungle gym!" Ghost yelled at me. It would have been funny if we weren't running for our lives.
