When we entered the guild hall my jaw almost immediately hit the floor, the place was impossibly large and filled with more things than I could even count. The whole place was lit by several hanging oil lanterns, exactly what you'd expect to find in every stereotypical tavern in existence. The floor was made up of thousands of wooden planks all laid out in neat rows with only a few loose or splintered boards. Lining the walls all the way to the ceiling was a repeating pattern of columns and arches leading all the way to the ceiling, which was a magnificent dome with a constantly shifting aurora of colors painted across it.
Lining the first floor was a few dozen wooden tables, each easily seating twenty people. Seated at the tables were tons of different people, even more diverse than those outside in the field. They were all laughing and joking around, playing games, drinking, eating, and just having an amazing time. One peculiar thing I did notice they all had in common was a glowing golden roman numeral seven, usually on their shoulders, but others had them in plenty of different locations.
On the sides of the building leading up the middle were two massive staircases constructed of the same marble as the exterior of the building. They were each carpeted with a grand red fabric, decorated on the sides with intricate gold designs and symbols. On each side was a marble handrail held up with a similar structure to the building itself, alternating columns and arches. The stairs lead up to a set of tall wooden doors, they had massive iron latches, presumably to open them, but the doors seemed far too big to be opened by any normal person.
As I was walked through the hall I could tell that everyone's eyes were directed at one person, and that person was me. I anxiously looked around the room as everyone starred daggers at me for a reason I couldn't imagine, I had never met any of these people in my life. I looked over to Viktor and Lilith, hoping to find some sort of answer or at least some support because at this moment it felt like everyone in the guild hall wanted to kill me, and I didn't have the faintest clue why that could be.
I turned to the two campers in front of me, they didn't look as angry as the other people in the hall, but they certainly weren't pleased with the present circumstances. Lilith seemed very focused on walking, she was probably trying not to think about anything else other than walking forward. The brown-haired boy, Viktor, was the exact opposite, he was shaking all over and I could see sweat crawling down the back of his neck. They both just kept walking towards the stairs and I followed suit, I really didn't want to get caught alone in this place right now.
"So, what did you guys mean by direct descendant?" I meekly squeaked the words out, barely audible. Viktor turned around and opened his mouth to answer, but before he could say anything Lilith smacked him over the shoulder. She glared angrily at him and he retreated back to his nervous shuffling as we picked up our pace, nearing the staircase. I moved quickly, getting myself a little bit closer to the only two people in the room who didn't seem like they were going to kill me.
The second my foot touched the staircase I heard a loud crackling sound coming towards me. When I looked over I saw a red-hot ball of fire headed directly for my face. I tried to duck, but it turned out I didn't need to as Lilith jump in front of me and smacked the flaming orb away, her hand covered in some strange glowing red coating. As quickly as it had appeared the glowing coating vanished from her hand, leaving it shimmering slightly from the residue. She glared over in the direction the fireball had come from, clearly very annoyed with the events that had just transpired.
"Darius! You are not helping this situation in any way!" Lilith yelled across the room to a buff dude decked out in a black and red robe. He was standing sternly, his still hand outstretched from having conjured the fireball. "What situation? That freak is gonna get us all killed or even worse!" His voice was gruff and angry, like gravel. He was displeased with me being here, that much was obvious, but I still had no idea was exactly I had done to aggravate everyone. The others around him looked away, ashamed of what the man had done, or what he had tried to do.
I wanted to shout out that I had no idea what was even happening and that I was just as scared as they seemed to be, but I couldn't find the words or the voice to do so. I was terrified of what was happening and the uncertainty that everyone had about this entire situation. Lilith could tell I was feeling like shit and she turned to me smiling, saying "It's okay, they're just scared, we're going to someone who will be able to help you figure out what exactly is happening" Her face was so kind and warming, it shocked me that she was being so nice to me. I simply nodded my head in understanding as we continued our way up the stairs.
As we got closer to the top of the staircase I could more easily make out the details of the two giant wooden doors. Carved all up and down the massive planks were what seemed to be elegant intertwining olive branches. The wood was very worn and splintering in several places all up and down the boards. The massive iron latches actually appeared to only be there for decoration as right below them were much smaller and normal sized handles. They were made of the same material as the latches, but were in far better condition, they appeared to have been polished very recently, reflecting the dim orange color of the lights from the hall.
When we got to the door Lilith immediately went up and pulled the handle, opening up another smaller door carved out of the first. It seemed strange to construct such a massive door, but then have the entrance be a tiny portion carved at the bottom. As we passed through the door I looked up and marveled at how precisely cut the smaller door was. The lines were perfectly straight from what I could tell and there was just enough room to allow the door to move on its hinges, but a small enough space that you couldn't tell the small door was there from a distance.
We entered the room and I was immediately taken back by the sheer amount of noise produced by several dozen people all seated around the room. It sounded like a football stadium full of angry horses, I had to cover my ears just to be able to think properly. The room itself was not too different from the massive hall outside, it had the same dim orange lights and wood flooring. The difference here was the walls, which were made of a brilliant white marble which reflected the orange light making the entire room glow. Seated all around the room on wooden stools were tons of people who all seemed to be waiting for something.
Through the muffled roar I heard Lilith shout "Erith! We need you right now, it's extremely important!" Her voice was shaking slightly and I could see that she was very nervous, her shoulders were trembling. From the back room came another woman's voice "Lilith dear, everyone's matters are important, you're just going to have to wait." The woman's voice was kind and nurturing, like a mother's touch. "Erith, come out here and bring your glasses, I'm sure you'll agree this is important..." Lilith called back to the woman.
Before long a woman came out from a behind a divider. She was dressed very casually, wearing a simple white jacket and yellow shirt embroidered with the roman numeral seven, similar to the campers in the hall. She had very messy blonde hair the stuck out in every direction and covered a golden rimmed pair of glasses, the lenses were exactly the same as those in the goggles Viktor had worn. However, her response to seeing me was far different from his, instead of fear and anxiety she seemed concerned for me.
She slowly glided over to me and eyed me up, the same as everyone else, however once again, she seemed to be more concerned than anything, like a mother whose child had just scraped his knee after a fall. She looked back to the group of other people gathered behind her and said "Children, please leave us, there is a matter that us four need to discuss privately." The many campers looked around, a little baffled, but they did as the woman said, quickly filing out of the room, leaving the four of us alone in the room.
Erith immediately turned to me and asked "So, what is your name child?" She held the same look on her face as before, but had seemed to calm down slightly. I choked back a yelp and manage to say "Avien... Avien Ventilius... ma'am" She nodded "That's a beautiful name Avien, do you mind if I ask you some questions" I simply nodded to acknowledge her request. " First of all, how old are you?" I steadied myself, almost falling over thinking about it "I'm 16, my birthday was today" The woman smiled brightly at that "That's great... next, do you know who your father is?" A heated lump formed in my throat as I heard the words. "No, I have no idea who he is, he was never around and I never met him" my tone came out much more bitter than I had intended, but it felt like the right tone for thi matter. Erith nodded "That doesn't surprise me, but I don't see any problem, other than the obvious one"
It was at this point that Lilith chimed in "That's the thing, he has no knowledge of our world at all" she was still trembling, but had calmed down enough to talk normally. Erith was shocked by this "How is that even possible? How has he survived?" A pit formed in my stomach, everyone kept saying that I should be dead or not even exist. Lilith simply answered with "I really don't know..." Suddenly Erith's face lit up, she seemed to have an idea. "He has the eye of the observation; Do you think we could give him a history book and have him instantly read it?" Lilith sighed "I highly doubt that, he doesn't know how to use it" I sighed "Yeah, I don't really know what it is..." My voice was hollow.
Erith shrugged "Well, we can't teach him everything just yet, but we can tell him the most important parts, I'm sure he has many questions" My ears perked up at this, I was finally going to be able to some of the answers I desperately needed. "First of all, why is everyone so disappointed that I'm alive?" The question came out much more depressing than I had thought. Lilith answered me "A long time ago six beings known as the masters of magic made a deal that they wouldn't have any more children for a bunch of different reasons, and we have strong reason to believe that your dad was one of those masters. Obviously, you know that one of them breaking that kind of deal could lead to some serious problems." I backed up so quickly I almost fell over a chair. "My dad was some magical being?" I blurted out frantically, the question was met by several nervous nods.
I anxiously scooted forward "Was his name Zeraph by any chance?" Everyone's expressions turned right to dread and worry "Where did you hear that name?" Erith looked at me with even more concern than I thought was possible. "I had a dream about two men, Zeraph and Sengario..." I squeaked out. The entire group looked at each other with frantic glances. "What were they talking about?" Lilith inquired to me "They were mostly just yelling at each other. Zeraph mentioned the children and me, apparently, he knew who I was and what was special about me. He also seemed to think that something was going to happen, something big. What was he talking about?"
The all gave me nervous looks, there was clearly something bad they didn't really want to tell me. Before either of the two could say anything Erith said "I don't know, I'll have to gather the cabin heads together to discuss this. For the time being..." She looked to Lilith and Viktor "You should give our new camper a tour of the grounds" Before they could say anything she pushed the three of us out of the room, locking the door behind us.
