The dreams I did have were fitful and nightmarish.
I dreamt that I was being chased by a horde of hungry zombies and every time I lifted my legs it felt like they were filled with sand. I was jolted awake when the horde was able to sink heir teeth into me. I sighed when I realized that I was safe inside the fortified jungle gym.
"Bad dream?" Ghost was laying on the ground, his shoulder was bandaged up. His blue eyes seemed to glow brighter in the firelight.
I nodded slowly, "That's all I seem to have now and days."
Ghost nodded in agreement. Nightmares were the only thing that seemed to plague me while I slept. All good, happy dreams has been chased away by leaving me with horrors both in the dream world and the living one.
We sat in silence for a little bit; we didn't speak at all to one another.
"What's your name?" I turned to Ghost, he was now trying to sit up on his elbows only to fall back down, breathing heavily.
"What?" I asked him with confusion.
"What's your name? I realized that I don't know your name. So what is your name?" he asked again.
"My name is Edith. But my friends call me- well they called me- Edi."
He nodded slightly, "That's a nice name. Edith... it works for you."
I felt myself blush, "Thanks. What about you?" I asked.
"What about me?" now it was his turn to give me a curious look.
"Well I'm pretty sure your parents didn't call you Ghost when you were a baby, what's your real name?" I asked him again.
I saw a small smirk pull to his lips, "Sorry Edi, but that's a secret between me, myself and I."
I rolled my eyes at the young man in front of me. "Why won't you tell your name? Is it something embarrassing?" I teased.
Ghost's laughs turned into coughs, "Something like that." He sounded weak and tired.
"You should get some rest." I told him; he nodded in agreement, his eyes already closing.
I couldn't fall back asleep. So, making sure that Ghost was okay, I pushed myself to my feet. I felt a weird lump inside of my shirt. Reaching inside, I pulled out the soft pink teddy bear. I had forgotten I had taken it with me when we left the house. Gently, I leaned over and placed the bear beside my pillows, before leaving it and Ghost behind.
I walked slowly through the jungle gym through the jungle gym from the darkest corners I could see children playing with one another. Small fires burned all around the place in trash-cans, keeping the place nice and warm.
"You're awake!" I turned around to come face to face with the boy who had allowed us to come inside.
The boy had kind blue eyes and handsome features, his smile was warm and inviting. And for some reason it made me uneasy. It was probably because kindness was hard to come by in an apocalypse.
"Yes, I am. My friend thought, he's still asleep." I told him, forcing a smile a smile to my face.
He smiled at me, "Forgive my shooters. They're not used to seeing anyone... alive." He really did sound sincere.
"That's... alright, I guess." I said awkwardly.
"Forgive me, again! My name is Isaiah." and Isaiah held out his hand to me.
I shook his hand, "Edith." I said simply.
"Edith, that's a pretty name." I felt myself blush and I quickly with-drew my hand.
"Thank you and thank you again for letting my friend and I into your... fortress."
"Its the best I could do, I couldn't just let people get torn apart by the undead." Isaiah explained.
"Well thank you for not letting us die." I thanked him.
"Would you like a tour of our little fortress?" Isaiah asked.
I paused for a moment, on one hand I did want to see the fortress, but on the other hand, I did not want to stray to far from Ghost's side. In fear that something would take a turn for the worse.
Isaiah seemed to notice my hesitation and he spoke to me with a soft voice, "Of course, I can understand if you want to stay here and watch over your friend."
I shook my head, "No, I would like to take a tour. I'm sure my friend will be okay."
Isaiah smiled and he held out his hand to me, "Then, right this way."
