Brian was shocked. Was something wrong with Maya? She didn’t see me, he thought. His eyes stayed on her for the rest of the class. When the bell rang she was out of the rom before anyone else.
The school day seemed to take forever. Brian couldn’t find Maya at lunch and was worried. He had also noticed she was in almost everyone of his classes. He thought it was strange until he asked a teacher.
It was now the last class of the day. Gym. Brian had seen Maya go into the girls locker room so he already knew they had the class together. He had also seen she was carrying a quite big bag with her.
When Brian came into the gymnastics hall he couldn’t see Maya anywhere. The bell rang and the last of the students came into the room. Still Brian couldn’t see Maya.
“Run laps around the stadium until I say so. And don’t run in front of the new girl.” the coach shouted. The students looked at each other confused. “You’ll see what you get out.” he said annoyed and hurried them outside.
Brian was one of the first to get outside. He didn’t expect to find Maya doing what she was doing. She had headphones on and she was building something?
“What is she doing?” James asked Brian. “I have no idea.” he answered. Scott was also standing with them. The teacher was getting annoyed. “Move!” he shouted. They all jumped and started running.
Brian could now make out what it was Maya was building. It was a bow. Like a real competition bow. She wore some kind of protection on her arm and on her fingers. There was a belt with a quiver on it around her waist. The other students had also noticed and they were staring while they ran. Brian also noticed a target about 70 meters from where Maya was now preparing to shoot.
The arrow went flying and everyone stopped in their tracks. The arrow hit the target, and Brian gasped in surprise. Right in the middle. Bullseye. She hit bullseye. The coach was staring at Mayas as she got ready to shoot again.
Everyone watched as she shot arrow after arrow. People were mesmerised. Brian couldn't believe his own eyes. As he and the others watched her, a girl walked up to Maya. The girl looked shy. Because of Brian's wolf hearing he could hear what was said between the two.
“Excuse me.” the girl said poking Maya’s shoulder as she lowered the bow. “Oh. Sorry.” Maya said and took of her earphones. “I was just wondering if I could try?” the girl asked. “Yeah, of course you can. Here let me help you.” Maya mumbled as she took of her protection gear, and helped the girl put it on the right way.
Maya now stood behind the girl, guiding her arms and feet, to be in the right positions. “Close your non dominant eye and aime trough the little red dot. When you feel ready just let go and move your hand against your neck.” she instructed. Brian felt a bit jealous.
“Like this?” the girl asked and Maya nodded. The girl looked extremely focused on her task. Her arms were beginning to shake. It doesn't look that hard, thought Brian.
The girl let go of the arrow and it hit the 3 point ring on the target. “Good.” encouraged Maya. “Thank you. I’m Valarie.” she said and gave the bow back. “I’m Maya.”
“What are you training for? The coach said something about it.”
“I’m competing in a few weeks. And it's the only sport I like.”
They laughed together. It seemed they were becoming friends easily.
“Can I try?” Brian asked. Maya looked up at him and smiled. “Want me to show you how to do it?” she asked. “No I think I got it.” Brian said smugly. Maya just laughed at him. Valerie laughed to. “It's harder than it looks.” Valerie giggled. “Sure.” Brian said.
“Let's make a bet.” Brian said mischievously. “If i get 5 or more you'll go on a date with me.”
“And if you louse?”
“Than you can decide a punishment for me.”
“Deal.” Maya agread and watched amused as Brian tried to pull the bowstring. He was struggling.
Brian let go of the bowstring as fast as he had placed it under his chin. Maya knew he let go way to fast. Brian looked to see where the arrow had landed. “Shit.” he murmured. “The muscles being used to pull the bowstring are not the ones most people think to train, and my bow is very heavy to pull.” Maya said smirking. “Better luck next time.”
Brian didn't even hit the target. The arrow was standing in the ground much to far to the left.
“So, what's my punishment?”Brian aske dreculantly. “Wednesday, come to my house at six. Wear comfy clothes.” was all Maya said. Brian looked confused as he turned around to start running again. “Okay.” he said. Is this a date? Brian thought to himself.
