May got a call from Rex right as she got off the plane from England to America. “Hey, get your ass over here. Irene needs you for something.” He said.
“Yeah, Ok, I’ll-” But he had already hung up. She sighed. It had already been a pain to get out of Europe because of all the assassinations, some by their empire some by others, and she had just landed in Boston. Now Rex was telling her to haul her ass back home because Irene needed her. And that was all the way across the country in California! She could tell she was not going to have a fun day. She and Ace hurried over to baggage claim to get their stuff. And having no ride out of there they had to drudge their baggage over to an empty alleyway and find a fire escape so they could get up to the roof.
“Hey, why do we have to come up here again?” Ace wheezed as he brought his bag up the last step.
“We’re here to get a fast ride home.” May said, scanning the horizon for something.
What? Ace had no idea. He just assumed it was one of the fantasy creatures that she claimed to be real.
“Oh, there he is.” She said, backing up as a gust of wind swept across the rooftop.
“Who is it this time?” Ace asked in an attempt to mock her.
“Gara.” She said simply, throwing up her luggage which landed in midair with a soft thump.
Ace jumped in surprise, still not used to how May did those kinds of things. She must have some kind of levitation power. He thought as she climbed on thin air up to where her bag sat.
“What are you waiting for? Come on!” She beckoned.
“Where am I supposed to go?” He asked. It was not the first time she had done this, on a few other occasions she had ridden air to get from one place to the other because she was, quote-unquote, “too lazy”. He had yet to figure out how she did it but in the meantime, he was skeptical but went with it.
May sighed, “Just walk straight forward when you feel something hard let go of your bag and walk up until you get to me. Gara will take care of the rest.” She was somewhat aware by now that most people couldn’t see what she could so she often found herself having to explain things that didn’t make sense to anyone else but her.
“Uh, ok.” He said, somewhat unnerved as he slowly walked forward feeling for something. Finally reaching something, he let go of his bag and started climbing upward. He felt like he was walking a balance beam, something with a straight yet uneven footing. He watched himself climb higher, seemingly on nothing, until he reached May.
“There you go,” May said, taking his hand to guide him to a stable place as his bag lifted off the ground and was placed beside him as a warm and moist puff of air was blown onto him.
“What did I just walk on?” He asked shakily, collapsing on whatever it was he was standing on. He was scared of heights and the fact that he had just walked up nothing was definitely not helping.
“A wing bone.” She stated, plopping down next to him with her luggage in her arms. “You might want to hold yours too.” She said, nodding her head towards his bag.
Grabbing his bag, he asked, “What are we on?”
They got higher and started moving forward. “A dragon.” She smiled.
“A what!” They suddenly burst forward with more speed. He clamped shut his eyes afraid to fall off, not knowing how large it was, as May laughed gleefully beside him as the glittering blue scales only she could see glistened brightly in the sunlight. To anyone on the ground they would look like a strange bird as they traveled across the country back home. Hours later, somewhere over the Great Plains region, Ace asked, “Hey, you know how it feels to get car sick on a long drive?”
“Yeah.”
“Well, I’m feeling that right now.” He said, looking down at the ground hundreds of feet below them becoming more noxious.
“Well, here. Have some gum.” She said pulling out a packet of mint gum and passing him a piece. “It always helps me.” She said, stuffing a piece into her mouth.
Well, it’s better than nothing he thought, unwrapping the gum and eating it himself.
By the time they got back to their base in Cali Ace had already thrown up about twenty times and passed out from fear. May ended up having to carry him off Gara along with all their stuff and drag him inside. “I’m back!” She shouted through the door.
Irene got up from the couch, where Eric was healing her, and grabbed Ace by the neck and almost threw him across the room yelling “You almost messed up the mission!!! You STUPID RETARD!”
That was me actually. May thought as Irene explained her situation with Luna and Eclipse to May as they walked to the interrogation room.
“So I need you to convince them to join us.” She concluded.
“Huh, well I’ll see what I can do.” She said as she walked in the room. She saw that the twins were awake and trying to escape. Once they saw her they tried to pretend to be asleep again but she had already seen them. “Uh, so… would you like to join us in taking over the world?” She asked uncertainly.
“Uh… No.” The boy said confidently.
“Eh he he.” May whined. “Do I have to torture them?” She called back to Irene.
“What, do you have anything better than DOING YOUR JOB!?” Irene answered.
“But I don’t feel like it.” She muttered in despair as she slid into a chair, a chain on her pant’s clanking against its metal. She pulled out the watch, looking at the skull design on the front for a moment before clicking it open. “Pff, not time yet.” She slipped the watch black in her pocket and turned her attention to the two in front of her. “So what are your names?” She asked
“Like we’re telling you.” The girl sneered.
May sighed. ”Hey, Irene! What are their names?” She shouted through the door.
“The boy is Eclipse and the girls is Luna. Their last name is Sulfur.” Irene shouted back.
“So they’re siblings.” She muttered to herself. “Well, how old are you? Telling me isn't going to hurt you.”
“Seventeen.” They said simultaneously.
“So two years younger than us.” She muttered as she studied their faces. Huh, they look vaaaaaary similar. “Hey, are you twins?” She asked.
“Yeah, what’s it to you?” Luna glared.
“Oh my god!” May said, her face lighting up. “That’s so cool!” She shrieked. “Will you please join us?” She asked, getting back on topic.”
“No.” Eclipse said, raising an eyebrow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone get this excited over twins. He thought, quietly impressed by May’s enthusiasm.
“Aw, why not?”
“Uh… because you’re killing people?” Eclipse answered.
“Well, you don’t have to kill anyone.” She suggested. “We already got two people who aren’t going to do any fighting.” She said, nodding towards the closed door. “One’s just intelligence and the other’s gonna help with the government stuff. I don’t really like politics.”
“Well, that doesn’t change the fact that you’re killing people.” Luna retorted.
“Yeah, well it doesn’t really matter unless you experience it yourself.” May said
“What do you mean!? Of course, it matters!” Luna cried.
“No, it doesn’t.” May retorted. “Your government kills people every day and you still support them. People all around you die and you never really care, do you? They’re just strangers after all.”
“No… I-” Luna started.
“She has a point, Luna.” Eclipse said, breaking her off.
“But that doesn’t make it right!” She fired back.
“Yeah? Well, our neighbor was shot down last week and you didn’t care.” He retorted.
“No, I cared.”
He shook his head. “No, you didn’t. You even laughed.”
“I- uh, fine, you win.”
“See?”
“So you’re on board?” May asked hopefully.
“Sure, why not.” Eclipse shrugged.
“No.” Luna said.
“Well, why not?” May asked, unzipping her hoodie, pulling out a toaster pastry and taking a bite of it.
She opened her mouth to say something but closed it.
“Have you got anything better to do?” May asked.
“No.” Luna grumbled, slouching under her restraints.
“Have social ideals finally gotten into your head?” Eclipse asked his sister.
May gave him a perplexed look. “What do you mean?”
“Well, most of the time she has no problem with death and even jokes about some pretty violent things from time to time.” He answered.
“Oh, really?” She asked in surprise. “That sounds kinda like me and my brother.” She said thoughtfully. “But with that in mind, why don’t you join?”
“I-” She let out a sigh. “I guess… It’s not like I’m completely against it and I’d prefer not to be against my brother. So why not.”
“Yay! Hey, Irene! They’re in!” May shouted, still seated out of laziness.
“What? That was fast.”
“So can I release em now?”
“Yea.”
“Key doke.” May said as she pulled out some daggers from the inside of her hoodie, throwing them at the twins to release them from their restraints. “There you go!” She said, getting up and waltzing out of the room leaving the twins alone in the room. “I’m hungry. What’s in the fridge?” They heard her say.
“I don’t know.” Responded an unknown male’s voice. “Go look for yourself.”
“Well, that was…” Eclipse started.
“Not what I expected.” Finished Luna.
“Uh... yeah.”
“Hey! You two coming out sometime?” The voice called out to them.
“Uh, sure.” Eclipse muttered unsurely as he and his sister walked out of the room.
