S&M: More Than What You Think!

If you’ve browsed the Mature section or even dabbled in Japanese manga and anime, you may notice a number of titles include the letter S or M. Like Scandalous M or No Strings Attached: Welcome to Strawberry M! But did you know that the M isn’t just a random letter, it actually stands for something.

If your first thought when seeing these two letters together is S&M...you’re actually not totally wrong! S and M do in fact stand for "Sadistic" and "Masochistic" but they’re actually used in a non-sexual way. In fact, in Japan, it’s used in place of “Type A” or “Type B” personality! So when someone asks “Are you S or M?” they’re not prying about your sexual preferences (usually) but trying to figure out what kind of person you are.

But what does it mean to have an S or M personality? For S, it’s usually the type of person who likes to take charge and lead in every situation. They may (see: definitely do) also take pleasure in seeing people squirm beneath their glare or immediately straighten up when they walk into a room. And for M, well they’re the ones who are usually following an S personality and tend to wince when an S raises their voice. But don’t mistake it as something they dislike. Typically, M personalities enjoy letting someone else take the lead and make decisions for them. An M personality may also inflict things on themselves; like overscheduling themselves, not saying no even when they don’t want to do something… And the S types will definitely take advantage of this too.

So, now that you’ve got a little bit of background on the meaning of two seemingly innocent letters… what are you? Do you have more S or more M in you?
