  • Oh My Otome: All About Otome Games!

    Oct 29, 2020

Before you get ready to step into the world of Villains Are Destined to Diewe want to give you a quick 101 on the world of Otome gaming! Why are we looking at Otome games? Well, you’re going to see a lot of familiar references to the gaming styles in Villains Are Destined to DiePlus, it’s a popular gaming genre that is often referenced in comics and manga.

Upon first glance, an Otome seems very much like a dating simulation. And it is. But it’s also not. Otome games are story-based visual novels that are primarily aimed at the female audience and feature handsome looking men with a generic female MC (main character). Much like a dating sim, you are attempting to win the favor of your desired AI boyfriend, but it’s not as simple as ‘saying the right thing’ necessarily. Many Otome games consist of complicated storylines that even one wrong decision can set you on a path towards the dreaded bad end! Or the boring, normal end. There’s an art to picking your choice to get not just the character you want but the right ending with him.

That’s right. It’s complicated.

Otome games were primarily popular in Japan but recently, back in 2016, the Korean mobile game,
Mystic Messenger debuted on the scene. And suddenly, everyone was interested in Otomes. This game had it all: attractive male companions, one strong and capable female companion, a ditzy MC making really dumb choices (why would you follow the advice of a stranger texting you???), and a story that goes deeper than you could even ever imagine! Mystic Messenger had players waking up at all hours of the night just to keep their storylines on the right track. It was addicting! But that, is the power of Otome.

So how does an Otome game work?

The standard Otome game will have your MC wind up in a situation where she suddenly has four suitors (and more could show up too!) that she is expected to interact with and eventually, win the hearts of. Each suitor has his own unique personality and challenges that you must cater to if you want to win him over. The character tropes will likely be the following types: the rich heir, the pretty playboy, the shy and timid one, and the one with the most tragic backstory (personality varying from overly hyper to super edgy and dark). You know you love them all, don’t lie.

T
o win favor with your chosen beau, you have to answer questions correctly. But this isn’t just “Do you want to have lunch?” these are questions that could test your attention to detail or sometimes, even just general common knowledge! Either way, they will keep you on your toes.

And no, without a guide, there’s not always an easy way to tell which answer is right for the path you’re hoping for. But that’s ok, you’ll have a lot of interactions and chances—unless it’s a crucial question that could completely determine whether you’re on the bad, normal, or good ending. Don’t worry though, you’ll still get to play through the rest of the storyline before you discover your fate. And there are so many ways to play in the game! Basic choice-based conversations, fun mini-games, private messaging, and sometimes, like in
Mystic Messenger, phone calls! Based on the choices you make in all these interactions, they’ll determine what kind of scenes you wind up seeing. Which makes the games great for constant replays, because after all, you have to see what EVERY ending is like, right? Right. Also, Otome games take a lot of trial and error...unless you use a guide. But why cheat when you could take your risks and get a bad end?

So while yes, in the end, you’re trying to date your favorite character, there is plenty of strategy, skill, and surprises to expect in Otome games. There could be a bomb in the apartment, your pet dog could actually be a hot guy, or you’ve been sent back in time and find yourself winning the hearts of Sherlock Holmes, Frankenstein, or Van Helsing. One thing you can expect is that they will never be just a linear story.

You can play Otome games on your phone, computer, or favorite console! Companies like Konami, Genius Inc., Cheritz, Otomate/Idea Factory, Koei, and more have released so many games that you’ll have your choice of just about every theme, trope, and guy types. And of course, reading Villains are Destined to Die will give you an Otome experience of a different kind!
