  • Black History Month: Celebrating Black Creators

In celebration of Black History Month, we’re excited to spotlight stories by Black creators! We also asked them about their experiences as a creator and how they're celebrating Black History Month. Check out their responses below!


1. Jamie

At his aunt’s wedding, Jamie, a hopeless romantic, bumps into Aiden, a socially awkward boy who easily steals his heart. After discovering Aiden goes to his school, Jamie decides to find the quickest way to win him over.


“I love to create for myself, but it really sparks something in my heart when readers tell me they relate to my stories!”


Celebrating Black History Month: "I have been obsessed with Black skaters on social media and recently I have bought my own pair, so I plan on going out and skating on the weekends to some great tunes more often.”


2. Hellbound

When Mike's brother, Sean, gets sucked into a portal to Hell by an evil demon king, Mike must brave the underworld to bring him back, even if that means teaming up with an actual demon to do it!


Besides being able to create characters that I feel a connection to as a trans Black person, I wanted to push the idea that even if you can handle a lot of things, it doesn't mean you should always be expected to.”

3. TOM N ARTIE

Each contract Tom and Artie take is a wildly different adventure. Follow these two interdimensional best buddy mercenaries as they fight and trick strange characters.

 

We made the series a perfect candidate to curl up to after having a long day and cozy up to some zany action and funny adventures with your snack of choice.”

4. Vampire Girlfriends

Poppy & Tabitha are two vampires living their lives in modern days!

 

As a Black person, you have to put in that much extra work to get noticed in the comics industry. It's hard being a Black woman in comics so I really hope this can change!” 


Celebrating Black History Month: "One thing I do like to do is educate myself on Black history that they didn't teach in school! Last year, I learned so much because of Black people on TikTok."


5. Rise in the East

Aderran wakes up in a strange house with a strange woman. With time, he learns about his new surroundings from his new “mother,” Sonta. When a mysterious man enters into his life, Aderran discovers the secrets Sonta kept hidden.

“My aim as a creator is to inspire and uplift more BIPOC creators and tell our stories in more imaginative ways.”

Celebrating Black History Month: "I’m releasing my second series, which is set in New Orleans, a city dear to me steeped in African American culture." 


6. Long Exposure

A nerd and a bully are forced to work on a class project together. After an incident at a strange research center, they start developing superpowers...and feelings for each other. 

 

White and light-skinned characters in art are more common and popular, so drawing characters that are brown or being brown while making art always has some risk, but do it anyway.” 

 

Celebrating Black History Month: "It's hard to want to celebrate these days with all the death and violence against Black people, but I'll probably spend it swapping interesting Black history facts with my dad and uncle over text.

 

7. Some Short Stories

For a long time, I told myself I needed to get better at drawing before I could start drawing comics. When I discovered webcomics, I saw various art styles at different artistic levels that gave me the confidence to become a comic creator.”

8. Our Universe
