  • Brand New App Update for iOS and Android!

    Mar 06, 2019

Hey hi hello!

We’re incredibly excited to release the newest updates for the Tapas apps available for iOS and Android, which will showcase a variety of features with a focus around ease of use, a larger emphasis on community or “free to read” comics and novels, as well as some larger visual updates.

When you open up the app, you’ll be greeted by a brand new splash image featuring everyone’s favorite mascot!

Right away, you’ll notice some big changes starting with the addition of a persistent search bar located at the very top.

We’ve found that a large number of new readers add their very first comic or novel to their library through the search function.

So, in order to improve the usability of search, we’ve introduced Trending searches which showcases frequently searched comics and novels by the community for that day, Tag based search results, along with a history of your most recent searches.

We’ve received some feedback in the past in regards to the difficulty distinguishing between comics and novels on Tapas. It also doesn’t help that a number of our most popular comic titles are adaptations of novels! We’ll be introducing new iconography to help you tell whether a series is a novel or comic much more easily. The open book icon will indicate that a series is a novel while the panel icon will indicate that a series is a comic:

Alongside these updates, we’ve also introduced a number of modules on the homepage including:

Continue reading - have you ever read a series you were super into but forgot to add it to your library? Well, we've got you covered with this newly added feature that will keep track of series you've recently enjoyed!

Trending now - a modified version of the Trending section that we know and love from the website

Top charts - algorithmically generated from an editorially curated list of series. Please be patient with us as we add Free to Read Novels in an upcoming update.

Top genres - the genre pages will now be organized on new trending algorithms and update in regular intervals to promote even more series and keep the genre experience feeling fresh. We've also added Novels to this section to help with more visibility for novels. This section will also adapt towards a reader’s personal interests, so if you’re a reader who loves fantasy or romance, these genres will be prioritized in this section.

Binge-worthy - a curated list of completed series or series with a ton of episodes. We'll be coordinating with creators to add completed series to this section regularly.

Creators we love - originally in the Explore tab, we're excited to debut Creators We Love on the homepage and highlight new and exciting creators publishing on Tapas.

Daily calendar - we've made some minor visual updates to the Daily calendar and are working towards adding Free to Read comics and novel to this section in the future.

Not only did give these modules some visual updates, but we changed the homepage to have a brighter theme to help contrast with the newly introduced Premium Tab.

The brand new Premium Tab along with genre-specific recommendations that you can choose when logged in. We hope to take more steps towards customization and personalization with future updates. And check out the new mascot icon for the Premium Tab. Looking real spiffy, Tapamon!

We’re testing out larger previews on the Premium Tab to help readers sample stories! You might have seen us testing these on our Instagram (link).

Finally, we’ll be introducing Fresh Episodes on the Explore Tab, which will showcase newly updated comics and noels that meet a 15 subscriber threshold. We previously set the threshold at 150 subscribers, but after discussing with the community and listening to feedback, we've rolled back the threshold to better support up-and-coming creators, while still maintaining some safeguards.

We're hoping that this update will help readers like you discover even more stories and bring more awareness to the Tapas community. If these updates sound like something you'd enjoy, then head on over to the iOS and Android app stores to download and update the Tapas app! Leave us a review and stay tuned for even more cool updates coming your way soon.
