  • CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: From Webcomic to Mobile Game!

    Mar 22, 2019

Welcome to our Creator Spotlight series, where we talk with fan-favorite artists in the Tapas community. We had the pleasure of sitting and chatting with Joanne Kwan, creator of Demon House and upcoming mobile game Demon House of Dates. Joanne shares with us about her experience becoming a webcomic creator and her excitement on the launch of her first-ever mobile game, based on her hit series. Let’s get to know Joanne Kwan!

1. How did you find Tapas and what drove you to start uploading here?

I actually first learned about Tapas—Tapastic at the time, from a classmate while we were in college. She had her own comic going on and showed me the site. I thought it was pretty neat! However, it wasn’t until a couple of years after I graduated that I decided to start my own webcomic series with Demon House. When I did, I remembered about Tapas and started looking at it more thoroughly and was impressed with the wide range of creators posting here and I thought my own series could probably grab some eyes.

2. Did you ever think in a million years Demon House would get a mobile game?

From the moment I began posting Demon House here, I did not think it would get as large a following as it did, let alone have a mobile game based off of its universe. I thought at most I might get a
couple of thousand subs for it and I would have been happy with that.

3What was it like when you were told a studio was interested in Demon House? How did that make you feel?

At first
, I was in disbelief. I was like, “Really? My silly series? Okay, if you want to take a chance on it!” haha. But after the initial shock, I felt quite humbled that a studio enjoyed my content and that Tapas was willing to champion my series.

4Rumor has it that the game is pretty innovative and not like anything ever done before. Can you give us some insight into that?

I guess I can say that the way players initially interact with the game to put mini events into motion is quite novel. I don’t think I’ve seen any other game like this. But I suppose that’s what all I can say for now! Anyone interested will just have to wait and see!

5How much collaboration was there between you and the studio?

There was and still is quite a bit of collaboration going on! The team over at PalmStorm have been nothing but wonderful and are the true wizards behind this endeavor. I just simply provide context, art assets, and some suggestions. They’ve even written most of the scenarios players will see in the game, I just give my approval and make edits. They’ve honestly helped out so much and really have made the meat of the game, with myself just putting on the garnish.

6.
Any last words for your fans?

To my fans, thank you so very much for sticking with me and every last molecule of support you’ve given! If you’re subscribed from the very first episode I published on Tap, or if you discovered it just last week, I am grateful for every last one of you! I hope you guys will have a bit of fun with Demon House of Dates and you can look forward to my continuing and future works! Readers, ink givers, Patrons,
lo-fi fuelers, customers, supporters of all kinds, and Tapas and PalmStorm, I would not be here right now without you all.
