This Staff's Pick was picked by one of our content editors, Brooke!1. Hi Brooke! Can you tell us a little bit about Dead Flowers?
Dead Flowers is an anthology-styled comic that follows Benu as he collects “flowers” from girls who are suffering in their lives. He’s trying to collect 100 flowers to revive his fiancée.
2. When did you first read Dead Flowers and what drew you in initially?I kept up with it from the very beginning since 2017 when it first released! The art really drew me in at first--I think it’s really beautiful. The story was what kept me hooked--it covers a lot of relevant issues that girls and women have to deal with, and I love the atmospheric storytelling.
3. Out of all the stories told in Dead Flowers, what story is your favorite and what was particularly memorable about it?
That’s a really hard decision to make! But one that stands out to me is “Forty Flowers - Lotus Flower”. Without giving away too much, I think that the love story between the two girls is really tender and compelling, and the creators are brilliant at capturing the atmosphere.
4. How would you describe the art style of Dead Flowers?
I think the art style is really beautiful--it’s simple but elegant, with a melancholy and subdued color palette.
5. Lastly, who would you recommend Dead Flowers to?I’d recommend Dead Flowers to anyone! It covers so many issues that girls face--family, relationships, identity, and more. It’s a very empathetic series with an important message. Readers of The Gap, in particular, are sure to love this series.
