  • CREATOR SPOTLIGHT: From Novels to Comics! (Ivy Song)

    Apr 26, 2019

Welcome to our third Creator Spotlight, where we talk with fan-favorite artists in the Tapas community. This month, we had the pleasure of chatting with Ivy Song, writer of the novels-to-comics series His Barcode Tattoo and Airplanes. Ivy shares about what it’s like being a young novel writer, her inspirations behind her popular series, and any advice she can give to aspiring writers. Let's get to know Ivy Song!

1. What are some of your favorite things about being a writer?

Writing is one of my favorite things to do and it makes me happy that for some of you, reading a novel or a comic that’s made by me, can bring you entertainment and maybe even make your day! I know for sure that when I’m having a bad day, sometimes, a chapter is all I need to brighten it! (Shout out to
Mushroom Movie for making me laugh all the time!)

2.
Where do you find inspiration? And how do you stay motivated, especially when dealing with writer’s block?

I find inspiration almost anywhere! Books, movies, Facebook memes (yes, even those), Tumblr prompts, and songs! There have been many times where I would be listening to a song that makes me feel some type of way, I’ll have a vague idea of what I want to write about but it always comes together after reading the actual lyrics (some of these songs are so meaningful!).

I’ll admit that sometimes it’s very difficult to stay motivated when I have writer’s block. It could literally be one word or sentence that’s holding me back from writing to my heart’s content! I try to remind myself of the reason why I started this series in the first place- I have a story tell and the scenes that I’m wanting to write are coming! Guys, if you’re ever having writer’s block or struggling to continue, remember why you started.

3. Your fans are pretty amazing (just stating the obvious~), and super active in the comment sections! What are some of the funniest comments you’ve read on any of your series?

I’ve read a lot of wild comments, but I think the most recent one that made me cackle was from His Barcode Tattoo. One of our Tapas staff, Michael (Hi, Michael!), said: “That kid is definitely going to have some abandonment issues.” It gave me a good laugh.

Some of my other favorites are:

“IM CRYING I FEEL SO ATTACKED RN”

“Well, that happened.”

“Please don’t get amnesia. Please don’t get amnesia.” (Seasoned K-Drama fans be like-)

4. What advice would you give to aspiring writers?

JUST DO IT. (This isn’t sponsored by Nike, but it could be, haha). But honestly speaking, just go for it. Whatever doubts you have, drop them, and do what you want to do. Create for yourself before others.

I feel like, in an industry like this, a lot of us are stopped by fear. What if I’m not good enough? What if people don’t like me? Let’s me be brutally honest here, not everyone is going to like you, and that’s okay. Don’t let the small handful of haters overpower all your supporters! Don’t let fear stop you from doing something you love! Go for it! And you’ll have a great time! :D

5. What are some of the things you’re excited about for your next projects?

I’m excited to write more, create more, and comic everything!!! (Alright, the last one is a bit of a stretch) but I am excited to turn
Flawless into a comic. You guys, it looks so cool already! I hope y’all enjoy it! <3

Thank you for chatting with us, Ivy! It's always a pleasure working with you! <3
