A Moonlight Sonata

The magical night at the mountain.

The magical night at the mountain.

Nov 30, 2025

"Grandpa! See, I got dragonfly."

An old man who was walking mountain smiles at his granddaughter who is only 11 year old after hearing this.

"That's great, I also used to catch them a lot with my grandpa" says grandpa.

The girl wrinkled her nose in curiosity. "Heh!!!!, you also had grandpa? Where is he now?"

Grandpa smiles towards her and says "Yes I too had grandpa, he has become one of the star in sky".

That little girl tilted her head, puzzled, the concept eluding her young mind.

Grandpa: See we got white lily finally, now we can celebrate the festival tomorrow.

Little girl: Grandpa, why we celebrate festival?

Grandpa: It's like a happy birthday to this island, as we thanks the island for giving us a place to stay and call it home, thanks to it I met my grandpa and Thanks to it I got two best happiness in my life and one of them is you, khushi. There is also an interesting story that my grandpa told me that is there is a bamboo forest in between of this mountain and there is a small lake in between of it. If you reach there, make a wish and reach the mountain peak on the day of festival then your wish comes true, that is why we call this island, Manorath Island.

10 Years later, Year 2026—

70 years ago when India was ruled by britishers, they were colonizing nearby countries and island, turning them into British territory but after the independence of india various islands and places were left in as Indian territory and one of them was Manorath Island just below of andman and nicobar island. Now in 2026, it has become a great tourist spot for its great mountains and especially for beach sides, Every year, the number of visitors are exceeding during their yearly festival on 25th Feb and this year too has many upcoming tourists for tonight's festival. Even if they can't enter in mountain zone due to local restrictions, they still appreciate the beauty of that island. It's amazing that far that island has come since that great tsunami, 10 years ago which shattered the whole island.
Now the next news, India's one of the youngest and talented Artist, Suraj oberoi has announced his come back and will soon be sharing his next work which is creating a huge hype among his world wide fans.

Kolkata—

"AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!, hello! Sir, Mr suraj isn't in his room? He didn't even took his phone or cards."

Other person on phone call: "Mr Joshi, you are his editor and it's your responsibility to find him instead of crying over this phone call, if you didn't find him by the day after tomorrow then we have good news for you, The termination letter will be sent directly at your home so you wouldn't need to come at office".

Ends call.

Mr joshi: "Seems like I would be returning to my blinkit delivery boy job."

Suraj standing on deck of the ship said "Nothing can beat the fresh air in between of middle of sea, I wish this ship keep going for forever. I am sorry Mr joshi but I can't paint any more, it has been 10 years huh... since I stopped hearing those mysterious voices, the voice which made me paint and create those painting, I wonder why ? Why did I even used to paint those painting, they gave nothing but trouble. Everyone around me always looking as if my life is set and I will never experience the hardships during life, whether it was school or college. Poor students, just because they didn't have talent then they blame you for being genius, I wonder how those toppers feels is it same for them as well? Sigh thinking about them is such a pain I should relax myself at this moment since I have already made a mistake because of those dumb teachers who keep suggesting me art college then made me join this shitty painting publishing company."

An announcement from speaker: We are about to reach Manorath Island so everyone be ready.
Suraj asks one of the volunteers what's the last point of this ship and he said the ship will stay at this island till next day morning then we will head back to kolkata.

Suraj sigh in dissapointment and steps on the island seeing a huge crowd,he heads towards forests. He saw the restrictions sign of not heading towards mountain but he ignored it and headed towards it.
A mild cold wind hitting on face , setting his hairs, birds singing the song as oceans waves giving beats from behind. Suraj was completely lost in this atmosphere and keep climbing the mountain while humming then he hears another humming of someone, of a girl. he saw a girl in white frock with blonde long hair which were moving with wind, skin as white as milk, shining brightly and looking towards sky. Suraj stared that scene, inside of him sparked a thought that I should paint this. Then she looked back towards suraj, their eyes met. Eyes as charming as a deer's eyes, a small mouth which smiled towards suraj, a smile that can be contagious.

That girl: You know, you can't stare a girl this hard that can be really scary for us girls, as we girls are very sensitive.
Suraj stuttered as his words didn't come out.

That girl laughed and asked, "What were you thinking while staring me? You were thinking something dirty Hmm..." she says while closing her left eye and with pout face.

Suraj: "No- no -no not at all, I just... I just thought that i should paint you on my canvas, when you were standing and looking at sky, it's amazing that after so many year, almost after a decade I thought of painting something but again my hands didn't move on it's own after witnessing such a scene as they used to. Oh btw I am an Artist, who do painting. My name is Suraj."

That girl: "Suraj hmm, I am Roshini, seems like I wasn't cute enough to wake the painter inside of you." She looks little mad(?) as she says this.
Suraj: "No,it's no like that. I already said it's amazing that I felt after so long to paint something."
Roshini : "so you found me cute huh, that's make my suspicious even more stronger, that you were feeling it while staring me" Fufu, Roshini continued teasing him.

Suraj: "Actually, I can't paint unless I hear that voice".

Roshini: "That voice?"

Suraj: "Yes, since I was little, I can paint really well that I even got the title of being youngest artist but it was only because I used to hear a lady's voice as if a witch is casting a spell on me to paint but soon after I stopped hearing those voices, I dunno the reason and I have very vague memories of my childhood as well. I also never got the urge to paint again once those voices disappeared, I know it may sound weird to you but that is all true".

Roshini: " I believe you, everyone has something in their life that can be magical to them, some may think it is negative while others think of it as positive, it's all upto your perception that how you perceive that magic. Well then, would you like me to be your magical fairy for today? To show you some magical places that may bring your magic too." She said with huge grin on her face, putting one finger on her lips.

Suraj silently nodded, but deep inside he asks why? Why I agreed on it? Did I fell for her or do I really want to paint again?

They both moved ahead and climbing the mountains then they enters in bamboo forest and right after reaching the middle of it they saw a lake reflecting moonlight on it.

Roshini ran barefoot toward the lake, the soft earth cool beneath her feet. With a sudden, joyful abandon, she kicked at the water, sending silver droplets leaping into the air. Each splash caught the moonlight, scattering it like tiny stars across the surface.

Suraj stopped, breath caught in his chest. In that instant, she became more than human—a vision of something ethereal. Her golden hair streamed behind her in the night wind, shimmering like spun sunlight, and in his eyes, she seemed to sprout wings, fragile and luminous, dancing across the lake like a fairy conjured from a dream.

The world shifted for him. A memory—vivid and unbidden— flashed before his mind’s eye: a lady seated at a piano, her fingers gliding over the keys as she played the Moonlight Sonata. Suraj could feel the music trembling through his chest, wrapping around him, resonating with the moonlit ripples of water and the soft rustle of bamboo leaves.
And then, a fire awakened inside him—a new, consuming desire.
The desire to capture this moment, this impossible convergence of light, motion, and music, on canvas. Every detail, every shimmer of water, every flicker of golden hair, every ripple of moonlight, every note of imagined music—he needed it all.
His heart thumped with urgency. The world was waiting to be painted, and in that instant, Suraj knew what he must do. He must translate magic into color, ephemeral beauty into brushstrokes, the soul of the night into art.

And so, beneath the stars, beside the dancing lake and the barefoot fairy, the desire to create was born—bright, insistent, and uncontainable.

But Roshini interrupted suraj by asking him to join her.

Roshini: "It's great to see that you still want to give another chance to painting, We human can break easily but we need others to help and fix us that's why we live our life with someone, that's why we fell in love otherwise coldness of loneliness can be chilling at first but it will eventually freeze you at some point. I don't know If I will be able to help you start painting again but I will definitely cast a spell on you that this moment shall be engraved in both your mind and heart. That whenever you look back, you will atleast have this moment to go on and find what's truly important to you."

Those words sounded like blessings from heaven to him and this moment too felt like a dream, after so long he felt like he was living at that moment.

As the night comes, they both reached the mountain peak and that's where suraj saw the town, decorated with lights, brimming with culture, various people shining with their smiles as they spent their time with the one they love and seeing all this he looked back towards Roshini, She smiled at him. Her words that she told him beside lake popped up in his mind that's when he felt to paint, he pull out the canvas and colors from his bag and start painting the town, that was celebrating their festival. As he draw on canva, a huge smile was on his face, his hands were moving on its own, splashing the colors as the fireworks blooms in sky.

He finally drew it after a whole decade but he fell asleep right after completing it, he was smiling while sleeping.

Next morning when he was about to leave island he looked towards roshini and said "Thanks for yesterday, thanks for helping me, thanks for making me live yesterday."

Roshini: "That's not a good thing, A thanks isn't sufficient." She looked directly in his eyes and continues "You have to come back and this time you have to help me."

Suraj widened his eyes then he says "Sure, I will be returning soon."

Roshini : "Promise me that you will not forget."

Suraj nodded and said "hm ,It's a promise".

Roshini ran towards forest and suraj head back to his home and company to publish his new painting.
