Don't Go West

Chapter 1

Chapter 1

May 03, 2026

With a gasp, she awakes, inhaling a breath as if it's her first ever, then panting for more.

She has a shiver, but not from the cold, the kind you get where you wake up from a nightmare but can't remember the details of it, only that it scared the life out of you.

She feels her head where there is still a throbbing pain. As she rubs her hand over her head, she notices her hair, short, extremely short. The word "buzz" comes to her mind.

She looks down at her body, which seems to be encased in some type of outfit. Light pink in color, calling it form-fitting would be an understatement. No curve or crevice is hidden in this thing that covers her from neck to ankle.

Her mind searches for reasons why she was in this outfit, did she put it on, or did someone put it on her? Her surroundings become clearer to her; she is in a forest lying by a large tree.
There is a spear next to her, and she recoils, did someone leave it here? she wonders, will they be back, is it hers, no, she thinks, she would remember, or would she?

She tries to remember anything, not just why she is lying in the middle of the forest with a bruised head, in a skintight outfit and a spear, but who she is, where she came from, but it hurts when she tries to remember anything.

She moves her leg to try to stand when the heel of her foot bumps into something, a rock that appears to have been used as a paperweight for some pieces of parchment.
A wind gust comes and scatters the pieces, but instinctively she collects most of them, believing they may have a clue to her predicament.

As expected, there is a message written on each of them, but in a language she shouldn't be able to understand, but somehow does.

First message: You are a Ponu, a wild and beautiful creature of the forest and wasteland.

At that, she has a slight giggle; Is this a joke, she thinks. She doesn't feel like some beautiful creature, and what is a Ponu supposed to be? The name sounds weird, something she has never heard of. Nothing makes sense.

Second message: Geeryo will be coming for you. It knows you are missing.

Sounds ominous, but what is Geeryo, a person, thing? At the very least, they could have told her what Geeryo looks like, she thinks, and is it coming for her a good or bad thing?

Third message: Beware of the humans also, they will kill you if they find you.

This one is the only message that gives her pause. Beware the humans, it says. I am a human, she thinks, aren't I???? A fear grips her momentarily, she looks at her hands, feet, body and rubs her face and hair. She feels human, she feels normal, but how can she be sure when she can't even remember what normal feels like to her.

The last message gives her a choice.
Fifth message: Stay with us if you like. Signal you understand us by breaking the spear next to you.

Fifth message? She realizes she wasn't able to collect all the messages; one must have blown away. But more than that, was there someone watching her now? Whoever was giving her this choice must be watching her.

She grabbed her spear and, with haste, moved towards the sun just beginning to set. She had an instinct that safety was in this direction. Whoever wrote that message, she thought, they could have done this to her. The more room she put between them and her, the better.

What she doesn't see...In the same vicinity, on a tree, is the fourth parchment....
Fourth message: If you want to leave, do not go west, the humans are there, and even worse, Geeryo hunts for you.

As she leaves, small creatures hiding in the bushes look at each other. Their small gray limbs moving down to their side with sad expressions. Sad because of the choice she has made, but also sad at the implications. They wonder if they were wrong to nurse her back to health and let her live. They wonder whether they have unleashed more evil upon the world.
