Chapter One

The Perfect Life

The morning sun poured through the wide glass windows of the Afolayan residence, painting the living room with a warm golden glow. Soft music played in the background as the aroma of freshly brewed coffee filled the air.

Idris Afolayan adjusted the sleeves of his navy-blue suit while standing before the mirror.

At thirty-three, he had become one of the most respected financial executives in Lagos. His colleagues admired his intelligence, his bosses trusted his judgment, and his integrity had earned him a reputation money could never buy.

Behind every successful man, people often said, stood a supportive woman.

For Idris, that woman was Damilola.

She walked downstairs elegantly, dressed in a cream-colored gown, smiling as she wrapped her arms around him from behind.

"You look handsome," she whispered.

Idris smiled at her reflection.

"And you look like the reason I work so hard every day."

Damilola laughed softly before adjusting his tie.

"You always know the right thing to say."

"I only speak the truth."

She kissed his cheek.

"I made your favourite breakfast."

"Now you're spoiling me."

"I'll spoil you for the rest of our lives."

Neither of them knew those words would one day become a painful memory.

Minutes later, they sat at the dining table, talking and laughing over breakfast.

"Don't forget," Damilola reminded him. "My birthday is next month."

Idris pretended to think deeply.

"Birthday?"

She folded her arms.

"So you've forgotten?"

"Oh no..." Idris chuckled. "I was only wondering whether I should buy you another car or finally get you that beach house you've been talking about."

Damilola's eyes widened.

"You mean it?"

"When have I ever broken a promise?"

She smiled happily.

"I love you."

"I love you more."

Their laughter echoed throughout the house.

To anyone watching, they looked like the definition of a perfect marriage.

After breakfast, Idris picked up his car keys.

As always, Damilola walked him to the entrance.

"Drive safely."

"I always do."

"And don't overwork your personnel try."

She waved until his black SUV disappeared through the gate.

Unknown to both of them...

Someone else was already waiting for Idris.

•••

The headquarters of CrestPoint Holdings stood proudly among the tallest buildings in Victoria Island.

Inside the executive boardroom, directors rose to their feet as Idris entered.

"Good morning, Mr Afolayan."

"Good morning, everyone."

His humility never changed despite his position.

The quarterly financial presentation lasted nearly two hours.

When it ended, the chairman smiled proudly.

"Ladies and gentlemen, thanks to Mr Idris Afolayan's financial strategies, this company has recorded its highest profit macentren six years."

The room erupted into applause.

One director leaned toward another.

"That young man is a genius."

"I heard two multinational companies have tried to recruit him."

"They have."

"So why is he still here?"

"He said loyalty means more to him than money."

The chairman turned toward Idris.

"The board has approved another performance bonus for you."

"Thank you, sir."

"You deserve it."

Outside the boardroom, several junior staff congratulated him.

"Congratulations, sir."

"Well deserved, sir."

Idris smiled warmly.

"Thank you, everyone."

As he walked toward his office, someone called his name.

"Idris!"

He turned.

A broad smile spread across his face.

"Tunde!"

The two men embraced like brothers.

Tunde Balogun had known Idris since university.

They had studied together, built dreams together, and eventually found themselves working in the same company.

To Idris, Tunde wasn't just a friend.

He was family.

"What are you doing here?" Idris asked.

"I came to congratulate the company's favourite son."

Idris laughed.

"Stop teasing me."

"I'm serious."

Tunde placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I'm proud of you."

"Thank you, brother."

Neither Idris nor anyone around them noticed the brief look that crossed Tunde's face.

It lasted only a second.

A smile on the outside...

Envy on the inside.

•••

That evening, Idris arrived home carrying a beautifully wrapped gift.

Damilola opened it excitedly.

A diamond necklace sparkled under the living room lights.

"Oh my God..."

She stared at it in disbelief.

"It's beautiful."

"It belongs to the most beautiful woman I know."

Tears gathered in her eyes.

"You didn't have to."

"I wanted to."

She hugged him tightly.

"I don't know what I did to deserve you."

Idris smiled.

"You loved me when I had nothing."

"I'll always love you."

He believed every word she said.

Later that night, as Damilola slept peacefully beside him, Idris stood alone on the balcony overlooking the city lights.

He smiled quietly.

A loving wife.

A successful career.

Good friends.

Financial stability.

Everything he had ever prayed for had become reality.

He closed his eyes and whispered,

"Alhamdulillah."

Far away, inside a dimly lit office, another man stared at Idris's personnel file lying on a desk.

Beside it rested several confidential financial documents.

The man slowly smiled.

"Enjoy your happiness while it lasts..."

He picked up his phone.

"It's time."

The call ended.

Outside, thunder rolled across the night sky.

The storm had begun.
