The car, a mid 90's Beetle, moved through the dark. In the passenger seat, a boy slept with a knitted yarn Viking hat pulled crookedly over his head. He was fourteen, small and rumpled, worn out from a night at the movies. Behind the wheel, his sister Jenny, eighteen and pretty, talked on her phone in a low voice.
"..Yeah...in September?...New York is awesome, I can't go though....The Booger Machine is awake," she said. "I'd better go." She snapped the phone shut just as he stirred.
He blinked around at the dark shapes of the dashboard, the road, the two of them alone in the car. "Where am I?"
"In the car, duh. You fell asleep during the second movie."
His hand found the hat on his head before his mind found an answer. He pulled it off, looked at it, and smiled in recognition.
"Second movie?"
"We went to the drive-in. Remember?" Jenny answered.
He held the hat to his chest for a moment, then put it back on, smiling in a way Jenny found strange enough to comment on. "Weirdo," she said.
He looked at her for a long moment. "Jenny? This must be a dream."
"You are making zero sense."
"I remember this," he said. "I won five free movies in the summer of two thousand and one. We picked a retro for the first one. 'Blazing Saddles' and 'The Great Silence'."
"Why those? You're too young for them."
The boy smiled "Snuck out of bed to see the TV version of Blazing Saddles. Wanted to see the real thing.
Jenny laughed. "Glad to see I'm being a good influence."
"You always were," he said, and then, quieter after a yawn, "I miss you so much."
Jenny glanced over in confusion, "What?"
But he had already drifted back to sleep. Jenny watched him for a second, then opened her phone again and dialed. "Hey, it's me again. You'll never guess what the Booger Machine just said... yeah... he can be so weird..."
