Cold.
So cold. The last thing Alice could remember was the faces. The men, the girls who had taunted her for years, and then nothing. And then the darkness came. Endless and black, smothering her in dark folds. She couldn't breathe, couldn't escape. What was the point, anyway? Nothing would change. She was a freak. Inhuman. A monster. She didn't deserve to live. And then there was him. her lifeline in this world of darkness and never ending misery. New energy surged into her as she heard a shout. A cry of desperation somewhere above the water. Strong arms lifted her up, and out of the blackness. "Alice!" The voice said. "Alice, come on, I know you're in there! Fight!" And then she was free. Looking up at him, safe in his arms. Not wanting to let go, afraid to let go, afraid to wake up. She looked up at the sky, once so bright and dotted with stars. I remember, she thought. I remember the stars. I was with him, then. I was safe. I was with him, and I was with him and I was with him and I was safe. She looked up at him, the one who freed her. The one who showed her what it was like to live. She looks up at him with hope shining in her eyes. "Cade...." And then everything went black.
