“Shhhh!” She said, “He’s coming!”
We heard big, thundering footsteps ram on the wooden floor and then the door opened.
It all started about a month ago. I was working at the detective agency for a summer job. For a 15 year old, it was great pay. We rarely got any calls, and if we did, it was just some boisterous teen having a party. In Raven Field, nothing ever happened. Everyone there was normal. The weirdest person we had was a woman who claimed to be a witch. She lived in the penthouse of an old apartment. By old, I mean really old. The thing was older than the oldest elders here in town. Nobody knows who built or currently owns it. You check in by computer, and nobody ever sees another human being there. All of us think it’s haunted. Instead of getting evicted, bad guests would just suddenly disappear, never to be seen again. Why do I still live here? Other than the apartment, I promise you, swear by my heart, that this place is normal. Just then, I got a call. Everyone else was in another room celebrating the birthday of Mr. Barely, one of the people that works here. I had the urge to just leave the call and go join them, I mean, it was chocolate cake and all! But, something told me that this wasn’t going to be a normal call. As I picked up the phone, I heard an unearthly buzzing, electric noise in the background. Nothing was said, but I’ve been trained to hear the slightest of noises.
“Help,” I heard a young voice squeak, almost silently.
I knew I needed to get help for this. I hung up the phone and ran towards the party room. The door was locked. I pounded on the windows, but it appeared it was locked from both sides. I heard Mr. Barely yell and fall. At that moment, black sludge filled all of the windows. I heard all of them scream, and then the whole building went silent. The door creaked open slowly, and I creeped into the room. Black sludge was everywhere, and there were a few black feathers on the floor. There was not a single person in the room. The flower candle that had been lit was still creepily spinning and playing the birthday song at a pitch so high, it would make a dog deaf. I ran out of the building, breathing heavily. I needed help. Now. Nothing was making sense today. I ran towards the garage where all of the vehicles were. I couldn’t drive a car yet, but in Raven Field, I was old enough for a Vespa. I hopped onto one a shade of light blue, with the company’s logo of a raven surrounded by a green wreath imprinted on both sides. I got the keys and sped off towards the location of the call. Weird. It’s changing. I merged onto a highway. Thankfully, it was midnight, so the few people that even drive around here would be in bed sleeping. Woah! The navigation suddenly glitched. Static filled my screen. It turned black. 2 red eyes glared at me through the screen. I blinked once, and then the screen went back to normal. The red pin signifying the call’s location suddenly started moving. It went much faster than anything I’ve ever seen. After about 30 seconds, I felt a big gust of wind. My Vespa fell over, and I luckily didn’t hurt myself in the fall. Once I got up again, I noticed that the pin suddenly stopped. Weird. It was in the middle of the Blackbird Forest. I shook the Garmin and it still showed the same pin. Stubbornly, I drove through the highway until I reached the entrance to the forest. The whole place was shaped like a triangle, and for some reason, the staff made the maps that way, too. I took a pizza-shaped map and suddenly remembered the party. I needed to find out what was going on. I raced into the woods until my garmin started beeping wildly, indicating I was in the right location. But, nothing was there… Suddenly, I felt another big gail of wind, but this time, it was much, much stronger. Obviously, I fell onto the wood chipped ground. When I got up, I saw a giant raven with feathers as dark as the night itself in front of me.
