A Song in the Darkness

Author Welcome and Content Warning

Author Welcome and Content Warning

Mar 30, 2021

"A Song in the Darkness" is actually four full length novels, plus many shorter supplemental tales that will be presented between the main works. "Darkwalker" and "Denzai" introduce readers to Tarriq and the world he lives in, while "Sins of the Father" and "Reap What You Sow" introduce a new narrator and take place five years afterward to conclude the saga. All four novels will be posted here, in their proper order, so readers will not need to search for parts or have to worry about reading them out of order.

Content Warning: This series is intended for adult readers, and includes strong themes of emotional and mental health issues. Some chapters contain scenes of physical assault/violence, child abuse/neglect, suicidal thoughts/ideation, and PTSD/anxiety attacks. Chapters including these themes and/or any overt sexual content will be flagged as Mature and an explanation for the flag will be included in the comments at the end of the episode. About the author: A freshman novelist and proud queer, J Hawk Hamilton is chasing a dream of someday seeing their work in paperback. They may not know what pronouns are best for themself (seriously, it's like spaghetti; throw pronouns at them and see what sticks), but they are 100% certain they are an asexual werewolf wearing a human disguise. You can usually catch them reading webcomics or playing World of Warcraft. They like long hugs, short queue times, and singing karaoke while sober.

Hello! Welcome to the world of A Song in the Darkness! This is my first undertaking in publishing my work, so please be kind. I would encourage you to give this a couple of chapters to get going before deciding if it's worth your time, as there's some world building and character introducing that has to happen.

You can support me by clicking on the ko-fi link and buying me a cuppa; if I get enough interest, I'll be posting links to short stories set in this world over there.

If you like the art you see here for the banner, cover, and thumbnails, please give my artist a visit. They do great work and I would love to hear that they got new supporters or commissions.

And if you think I won't read the comments, think again! I want to know what readers think, so let's have some interesting conversations about your theories and if you think I'm any good at this writing thing.

The city of Londinium is made up of several thousand people scraping out an existence in a man-made cavern. With Earth’s surface uninhabitable, the sub-city relies on highly sophisticated life support machinery for their continued existence. Keeping all that machinery in working order is a difficult task, considering it’s been in place for close to a century.

On one hand, Londinium has Tarriq to oversee the upkeep of the systems that make continued life possible. He’s a specialist when it comes to this. On the other hand, Tarriq is an ill-tempered misanthrope. If he could live a hermit’s life with his partner Meshani, he would in a heartbeat. But the sub-city desperately needs his unique skills.

Unfortunately, no matter how hard Tarriq tries, the machinery needs more and more upkeep with each passing year. Multiple unexpected equipment failures have Tarriq running himself ragged. He can keep jury rigging the systems for only so long, as they really need to be replaced, and that job is entirely too big for just one person.

After an unexpected encounter with his boss’ son, Tarriq now finds himself having a hard time keeping *himself* together when faced with a mentally and emotionally abused young man with nowhere else to go. But befriending Kellen might prove to be critical in getting the failing life support systems overhauled before they completely shut down, an eventuality that would doom the only home they’ve ever known.
