A Thief's Voyage Across New Seas

Prologue

Prologue

Apr 10, 2026

Ivy held the cumbersome scepter in her hand as she ran up the tower steps. Armored footsteps clanked on the pavement beside her. If she just had a second to herself.

She reached the top of the tower, panting. She was in a small room. Ivy slammed the door shut, before planing her sword in it, hoping it would be enough. But she was trapped in here, like a prisoner. Closing her eyes, she cursed. This was why she never involved herself in these coups.

The scepter was a long stick made of gold, with a black stone carved into the shape of a moon waiting on top. Ivy curled her hand. The darkness responded to her, like some ethereal being awaiting her command. Releasing a slow breath, she tried to pause. She had the abilities. Why couldn’t she just shift.

The armored steps came to a halt outside of her door. Ivy pulled the scepter closer, and in just a brief moment, she pulled her sword back. As stupid as it was, she would need it. She could connect to her magic, she just needed time. Or at least, that’s what she had told her self.

Doors bursting open, the guards came in. One of them raised his sword, ready to deliver a blow onto her head. Ivy countered with her own blade. Meanwhile, she did her best to focus on her internal energies. If she could just escape. The otherworldly energy gained traction in her mind. A second guard appeared, drawing an arrow.

The arrow whizzed toward her, but it would never reach her. In a moment, the tower, and the guards disappeared, giving way to a cliff overlooking a vast sea. With the scepter in one hand, and the sword in the other hand, Ivy would be exploring the new world with a few things.

At 23 years old, Ivy has been struggling with life. Her parents disowned her, and it's an uphill battle pay for rent, let alone keep a job. When she's backed into a corner, she agrees to help with a dangerous mission: to steal a scepter from the king. When the mission goes awry, she takes the magic item and shifts into another realm, right into chaos-ridden kingdom of Rathos.

Looking for a way to survive, Ivy joins a pirate ship. Her new life seems to stabilize, but she is given a task that takes her straight to the feared pirate queen, Lavender. Upon first meeting, Queen Lavender is cold, critical and crude. But when Ivy saves the woman's life, they become connected in a way that Ivy despises. As politics change, Ivy becomes the pirate queen's guard, although she's not pleased about the change.

And yet, as the two women face various challenges together, Ivy's perception of Lavender changes. Against her better judgment, Ivy finds herself drawn to the pirate queen in other ways.
