It’s around six when my alarm to wake me up starts going off, its high-pitched sound pierces my ears as I struggle to wake up. I lay on my bed for a few seconds the sound of the alarm still going off. I let the alarm keep ringing until I can’t stand it anymore, my hand rushes to my phone to shut off the dreaded noise. I sit up slowly still a little groggy, but the grogginess soon goes away, instead the feeling is replaced with irritation as realization sets in as to what day it is. The first day at my new school.
I start to get ready for the upcoming day I pick an outfit I know I won’t standout in, though I only hope that it works. Me and my family moved to this little place in Iowa called Carlisle, its small and quiet so I don’t mind it. We moved here this august from san Diego California, so it’s a little different then what I’m used to. My mom found a good veterinary job here after her old clinic had to make “budget cuts”. I was a little sad when I heard the news that we were moving I had only known san Diego, I had to say goodbye to all my friends and family but I knew this would be a good opportunity for mom. Since dad died mom has been trying her best as a newly single parent with two kids, but since we moved here everything seems like a new chapter in our life. Though since we moved here at the begging of august I wasn’t able to meet new people, so I don’t know anybody at my new school.
After I get done getting ready, I head downstairs to greet my mom and little brother, as I go down the stairs, I can hear my mom rushing to get ready for work. I turn the corner of the stairs stepping on the main floor and head towards the kitchen. I see my little brother sitting at the table eating some cereal and my mom looking at and gathering papers, “Buenos dias mama” (good morning mom) “Buenos dias mijo, (good morning son) did you sleep well last night?” “yeah” I reply, I then turn to my little brother “are you excited for your first day of school Felipe?” Felipe’s face goes big with a smile “Si, I’m going to make a bunch of friends” his confidence radiates from him putting a smile on my face. “I know you will” I reply happily, I then go and grab some breakfast. “what about you Enzo, are you excited for your first day of school?” my mom askes “Ummm I guess” I say sounding unassured. My mom looks at me with sad eyes, I know she’s thinking that I miss san Diego, that we shouldn’t have moved here and left everything behind. “But since it’s the first day we won’t have to do anything so it will be an easy day” I say trying to reassure her. She gives me a smile then turns to Felipe “are you ready to go Felipe?” she asks. Felipe jumps from his seat, grabs his bag, puts his dish in the sink and starts heading to the door with mom. “I probably won’t be home till five or five thirty so don’t forget to get your brother from school Enzo” “okay bye love you” “love you too” she says before walking out the door.
As I walk to my new school I can feel the hot humidity up against my skin with no sign of a breeze in sight, it seems that this is normal weather in Iowa because it has pretty much been like this for the past two weeks. As I approach the school, I begin to feel a little nervous I try reassuring myself by remembering how I won’t be the only new kid here. I put on a poker face and walk through the doors. As I walk in I can see people walking in all different directions, flooding the halls. I look at the time and I realize that its 8:24 “WHAT! class starts in one minute!” I pull out my schedule and look at the room number for my first class “235”. I then go to the first door I see with a number on it and look at the number “218, yes I’m close” I say in my head, not a second later I hear the ringing of the school bell. I rush down the hall scanning very room number I see. There were still some other people trying to find their classes as well. I take a right down a hall and I can see there’s a classroom at the end of it with the numbers 235.
I walk towards the room not to quickly but not too slowly. As I enter the room a strange feeling comes over me, it’s as if I am about to faint and go numb. I rush to a seat just in case I really do pass out which would not be a good image for me on the first day of school. The feeling seems to go away after I sit down, two boys had fallowed into the classroom behind me. The teacher doesn’t seem to care that we’re late, after a few minutes more people came into the class and the teacher finally starts. “Alright let’s do attendance” he says in a chipper voice, he’s not big or intimidating teacher. He’s short with a bald head and looks easy going. As he’s doing the attendance, I look around the room to see what my classmates are like. None of them seem very talkative and look like they don’t want to be here, but then again who dose. I chose to sit at the left side of the classroom in the second row right next to the window. After taking a quick look around the room, I turn to the window next to me as the teacher continues to call out names. “Elena Aaker” “here” “Adrian Adams” “here” the voices called out. Looking out the window I watch the trees blow in the wind it’s calming and serene.
