After the Last Dawn

Prologue

Prologue

Mar 16, 2025

Speedy clicks of the keyboard filled the room as a figure hunched over, cans of soda strewn over an extensive setup of screens that displayed code only a specialist in the field would understand.

In the background, a news anchor delivered revolutionary breakthrough news made by the scientists of the country in a monotonous drone. "We are here interviewing Dr. John Algomy Smith, a fellow researcher who was part of the team of scientists that led this massive discovery project. What would you like to tell us regarding the achievement and where do you see yourself going from here?"

He tuned out the news, clicking on a link that sent him straight to a domain, the title under his account name showing "Admin" and he immediately pressed on the link titled- "Project AUREUM: Are the citizens just test subjects for the government approved operations?"

In the background, Dr. John Smith continued, "Well I would like to start by saying that we have pretty much achieved history. Through laws of quantum mechanics that have been a mystery up until now, we are gradually evolving and adjusting to the changes our earth is going through. Through this project we have calculated an estimate of 50% decrease in use of fuel and electricity due to majority of the buildings now being powered by solar power. We reached this result after years of thorough research in quantum tethering..."

The volume was lowered to a faint buzz as Silas huffed out a breath and set his hair in the reflection of one of his dull lit screens with minimum effort before clicking on "start streaming".

"Good evening, guys. Today we are talking about the Area 51 mystery and how some of the data points towards secret operations being conducted in the area. Before elaborating, I would like to stress on the streaming rules that are the same as usual. Please do not share these videos on any social media platforms as for some reason they track me down to my channel and take down these videos despite them not breaking any guidelines."

He rolled his eyes and sent a knowing look at the camera. Some of the live comments in chat sent exclamations of disbelieve and mirth while the rest tried to guess what the topic of the day would entail. Silas briefly glanced at the comments, and once satisfied with the replies, continued.

"I make these videos because I believe in freedom of thought and critical thinking and this place exists for people who enjoy questioning the order of things. I wholeheartedly encourage your opinions, whether they are the same as or different from mine so let's keep this community of independent minds thriving."

"Anyway, today's topic is based on a few encrypted files I found online regarding a new project the government is seemingly investing heavily in, all headquartered in- you guessed it- Area 51." Comments flooded the chat, a few catching his eye -

"Bro knows too much for the govt to leave him alive."

"If he disappears tomorrow, we know what happened."

"Is this even real, lmao. His entire platform seems like a conspiracy money grab to me."

"How does he get this info? "

"Area 51, my ass. Dude just shows up with his face card hoping that people will buy the bs he's spitting. Women smh."

"Now, now, let me finish." Silas drawled sardonically. The harsh comments came with the job and with the amount of research and skulking he had done online; he wasn't about to let it go to waste because some people decided to click on the video and leave their single braincell worth of commentary in his chat. "And don't worry, I haven't breached the classified information...yet."

He stared deep into the camera for a second before breaking into a sly grin. "All jokes, all jokes. Going back to the topic, the new project seems to be an extension of the solar power tethers recently created by our brilliant scientists. This time however, they claim to have found a way to reduce global warming by making a few tweaks in the existing mechanical tethering theory. Let me explain-"

As Silas felt himself get excited to explain his findings to his viewers, the streaming screen suddenly went blank. A second later a large message popped up on his screen. "Your account has been temporarily suspended due to violation of creator's guidelines. Kindly ensure further compliance to avoid getting your account permanently banned." He just stared at the message in incredulity for a few seconds before breaking out into unamused and frustrated laughter.

"This is the third time, you assholes..." he muttered. Realizing that him suddenly going offline would prompt questions from his viewers, he took to his social media to share what had happened and reduce chances of unnecessary rumours spreading. The last thing he needed was for them to think that the FBI had busted into his room to arrest him again.

Once the message had been sent and the followers had been pacified with promises of double the number of streams next week, he let his fall back to the support of his chair, closing his eyes and taking soft breaths to ease the annoyance and fidgetiness building up.

As the room descended into silence, Dr. John Smith's voice once again became faintly audible. Silas's ears caught onto the words easily since those where pretty much part of his research and he turned up the volume, giving in to slight surprise. Whoever's decision it was to speak about the new project openly, they were clearly taking the risk of facing backlash and letting confidential information leak.

"Project AUREUM is a very personal project for me. We have put in unimaginable amount of work into this, and I can't wait for the trial testing phase to be over so that we can finally introduce it to the world." Dr. John was pretty much gushing. "The numbers we expect emissions and temperatures to go down to is astronomical! This could spell a whole new era for the planet..."

Silas raised an eyebrow and muttered, "Indeed, it could."

The sun is gone.

No warning, no explanation - one moment it blazed at the center of the sky, and the next, darkness claimed the world. The air grew cold. The days and nights turned to one and a cold dread enveloped the earth, land and water alike. Torches, batteries and other sources of light became the new currency and the warmest of lands turned frozen.

In a world where survival means staying one step ahead of the creeping dark - and the horrors it unleashed, humanity's bets have been placed on an unlikely trio.

A soldier who's scars even the dark can't hide, a tech guy who treats the end of the world like a science fair project, and a kid genius whose last experiment may or may not have locked the sun behind a cosmic firewall. By no means is it a dream team, it's damage control...and the sun's not their only problem.

The night holds more than just shadows. Something hunts. Something whispers. A cult spreads word of vanished suns and eternal damnation. And somewhere in the wreckage of a failed project lies a hidden key - a fragile thread of hope.

Because the sun isn't gone. It's trapped.

And the fight to bring it back has only just begun. They just don't know it.
