At an exclusive event for members of a golf club, one would expect something calm and peaceful, right?
Wrong. At least, that would be wrong when describing tonight’s event.
“Have you ever imagined what it would be like if your parents knew I let you come to this kind of event, Kyle?” Yanick asked, lowering his voice slightly as he glanced around the room.
Kyle laughed, the sound light and unconcerned.
“Hahaha. What’s so bad about it? It’s a normal event. There’s music, food, and drinks. Magic shows?” He tilted his head, lips pursing briefly. “That one’s a bit strange, but to each their own,” Kyle replied with a shrug.
“Yes, and don’t forget the part where there are slot machines and poker games,” Yanick added, crossing his arms. “Or the best part of all — striptease shows.”
“Yanick,” Kyle said, letting out a slow breath as he turned to face him, his tone calm but firm. “I know you worry about what my parents think about the way you take care of me, but I’m legally an adult, remember?” A small, reassuring smile appeared on his face. “You were my guardian, and in a way you still are, but you’re also the cool uncle everyone wants to have.”
“At least tell me this is what you were expecting,” Yanick insisted, narrowing his eyes slightly, “and that I’m not taking unnecessary risks with your parents by bringing you here for nothing.”
“I can’t say it’s what I expected,” Kyle admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. “Sorry.”
“Kid, you’ve got to be joking, right?” Yanick snapped, throwing his hands up. “We’re leaving right now.”
“Wait!” Kyle blurted out, his eyes lighting up suddenly. “This is turning out way better than I expected!”
‘AND NOW, ONE OF THE MAIN MALE ATTRACTIONS OF THE NIGHT: PHOENIX!’
Kyle stopped listening to Yanick the instant the announcement echoed through the room.
Phoenix? Hmm… could she really be as intense as the fire she represents — change, rebirth?
It wouldn’t hurt to take a look… I guess?
“Kyle, are you even listening to me?”
“Yes, yes,” Kyle replied quickly, already stepping back, distracted. “Sorry, I need to go check something. Head to the bar — I’ll meet you there in a bit.”
And without waiting for an answer, he turned and walked straight toward the pulse of the music.
