This was the first time that I tried to save such a physically injured person, with his body almost completely burned, with that expression of pain and anger at the same time, his screams pierced my ears and froze my being, my student, Heinrich, he was petrified, my team was doing their best to stay calm but things were getting out of hand, my assistant was not coordinating and I was about to burst into tears, my senses were out of place, my mind was very troubled and the storm outside only made my situation worse.
First of all, my day had been very quiet, there were few people and the sisters were enjoyning the warm weather, a day like few others in this region, as we usually do every day, we got up early to enjoy some exercise and then pray to God for our sins. At breakfast, Sister Mirra told us that the economic situation of our small town was on the rise thanks to the trade and export of milk from the Schrurer farm, which made us happy alot because things had been going from bad to worse for months and this monastery had no support beyond the donations of the good Ernst, grandfather of the owner of that small farm.
The day continued its course and as the hours progressed the sun seemed to drift away. It was 6 pm when I was doing a routine checkup on one of my regular patients and a good friend, Mr. Rubrech, who for weeks seemed to be losing weight and lucidity, looked haggard and seemed to have difficulties articulating words, his physical condition made me sad because he used to be a big, stocky man, a great ex-soldier and hunter, who had been feeding the neediest people around. During his review, we were talking about the last time he went hunting, the day he began to notice a deterioration in his body.
- It was a Tuesday, I went out to the forest to hunt some animals to take home, but this time everything was strange, the birds were completely silent and there was no wind, the ground seemed to be virgin, there were no tracks or traces of any animal living there, which is completely impossible because I have been hunting in the place for years, even since before the war my family used to hunt here, but this time the place seemed completely different, I tried to make a deer going out by shooting to the sky a couple of times, but it was useless, there were not even birds that flew away with that roar. I kept walking around the place as it started to get dark but I didn't find any trace of anything, I just found my own footprints ...
It was when I saw a blinding flash on the horizon behind the hills and saw a luminescent figure approaching from the sky on direction to the forest, then I dropped my gun and started to run, I ran like never before, the unknown of what was approaching and If it could destroy the area, I thought of a meteorite, or maybe it was a crashing aircraft, that led me to think that it could be another attack by the northern commandos and then I remembered the horrors of the recent war ...
Then nothing.
I woke up on the ground and it was daytime, everything was normal, there was a warm dim light between the trees and the landscape was revitalized, the grass was green and had a vibrant tone that seemed magical, many flowers around and the animals were back, the deer, the rabbits, the birds, those damned birds that I hate so much. My heart returned to my body and I was able to sit up, I wanted to take advantage of the situation to hunt something but I had dropped my gun before and I had no idea where I was, when I tried to walk I noticed an intense pain in my back, the one you attributed to the bite of a wolf, it was since then that I have felt this way.
- I thought about claiming the evident omission of details from that time, but due to the nature of the matter, I understood the reason for his actions. I proceeded to prepare the syringes for a further blood test and when I was about to end, the nurse abruptly burst into the place screaming in terror ...
- Doctor, quickly come to the surgery room, there is a very wounded and delirious man who arrived in the company of Miss Vodor!
- Just at that moment a lightning bolt fell and gave me the chills, and with all the pretended calm that I could show, I advanced towards the nurse and gave her the syringe while Rubrech murmured - God...protect us - I walked quickly down the corridor where my apprentice Heinrich was, who I asked to enlist and meet me in the operating room.
Once there I asked to be informed of the situation and Daniel my assistant began to give me the data ...
- A middle-aged man with severe burns throughout his body, an apparent state of shock and an exposed wound in the abdomen, was admitted approximately 8 minutes ago in company of miss Vodoor, who says he was found on the outsides of Schrurer farm.
