Long ago Three-Eyed Cąȶ lived in Nӕse, the world that encircles the people’s world where the great Deity and other spirits live. Now Three-Eyed Cąȶ was the smartest of the Deity’s creations. So smart in fact that they often became bored. It was always dangerous when Three-Eyed Cąȶ became bored. One day as Three-Eyed Cąȶ watched the world of people below them, Three-Eyed Cąȶ became bored. Rolling onto their back, they let out a sharp yowl as they flicked their tails back and forth.
“Deity!” Three-Eyed Cąȶ whined. “I am bored!”
“Play with the animal spirits, Three-Eyed Cąȶ,” Deity instructed.
Doing as they were bid, Three-Eyed Cąȶ went to play with the animal spirits. Yet soon Three-Eyed Cąȶ bored of them. They were too fast for the large animals and too big for the small. The cautious animal spirits refused to play with Three-Eyed Cąȶ, wary of their eyes. Many years before Three-Eyed Cąȶ had been blessed by the Deity with three eyes. These three eyes saw everything. One eye saw the future; one saw into the soul and mind; and one saw the complete present. Such a blessing made it so Three-Eyed Cąȶ always knew what others were going to do, allowing them to always win at games. Bored again, Three-Eyed Cąȶ returned to the Deity.
“Deity!” Three-Eyed Cąȶ cried. “I am bored!”
“Play with the elemental spirits,” Deity instructed.
Once again Three-Eyed Cąȶ did as they were told, but it was not long before the elemental spirts failed to entertain Three-Eyed Cąȶ.
“Deity, I am too fast, too skilled, and too smart for everyone here,” Three-Eyed Cąȶ complained. “And I am bored still!”
Thinking for a moment, Deity smiled.
“You are right, Three-Eyed Cąȶ,” Deity nodded.
Reaching behind themselves, Deity pulled their shadow free. Placing their shadow in front of Three-Eyed Cąȶ, Deity continued to smile. Confused, Three-Eyed Cąȶ watched without speaking. Tails twitching, Three-Eyed Cąȶ tried to see the shadow clearly as it took form, but not one of their eyes worked on the shadow. When the shadow became solid, Deity spoke again.
“Three-Eyed Cąȶ, this is Death, who has always lived as my shadow. They will play with you and keep you entertained,” Deity said.
“What strange creature is this, Deity?” Three-Eyed Cąȶ asked. “I cannot see its future, its mind or soul, or the details of its present.”
“That is because Death is always present, is always everything and nothing. Death is like me, only known through unknowing.”
