A feeling of uneasiness was vibrating from the corridor walls as Mackenzie and Grace searched the school for Freddie. Mackenzie had that horrible gut feeling, telling her that something bad was going to happen, making her desire to find Freddie a little more intense.
"Try ringing his phone again." Mackenzie said to Grace.
Grace took out her phone, pressing it to her ear as she continued to look in empty classrooms for Freddie. The faint sound of Freddies ringtone played from further down the corridor.
"Come on!" Mackenzie exclaimed.
They followed the sound of the tune, finding Freddies phone sitting on the window sill. Mackenzie stared blankly at Freddies phone, she was beyond confused.
"Why would he just leave it here." Grace asked in confusion, picking it up from where it sat.
Something was seriously wrong with Freddie. For all they knew, the serial killer could have drugged Freddie, that's why he was acting so strange.
"You don't suppose he went to the hospital after all?" Grace asked. Mackenzie shrugged her shoulders.
So many possibilities ran through the girls minds, making them feel dizzy. If they didn't find Freddie soon, they would have to inform a teacher of his disappearance. The last thing they wanted was to drag teachers into the situation. They would never believe the girls if they told them that someone bit Freddie and now Freddie had somehow gone missing.
Suddenly, an ear piercing scream came from outside. Mackenzie and Grace ran outside to where the noise came from.
Mackenzie's breathing became quicker, as she stepped back from what she seen. Her eyes were fixated on the trail of blood from the door, towards the middle of the car park.
"No, no, no" Grace screamed, tears spilling from her eyes as she followed the blood further into the car park.
Mackenzie followed Grace, her eyes widening at the sight. Her legs became like jelly and her hands shook as a breath escaped her lips.
Before them was a girl, lying lifeless on the ground. Blood was pouring from her neck and hovering above her neck was Freddie. He turned to face Mackenzie and Grace, blood covering his mouth. He looked delirious. The whites of his eyes and the Iris's had turned blood red and the veins in his eyes were so dark that they were almost black. He had razor sharp fangs protruding from his upper jaw, with blood from the young girl slowly dripping from them. Mackenzie stared in disbelief. Freddie was the serial killer?! But he couldn't be! Freddie was a good person. He never did anyone wrong!
Freddie stood up from the girls body and ran his tongue over his fangs, licking the remaining blood from them. His eyes slowly looked Grace and Mackenzie up and down as he imagined the taste of both of their warm blood. He tilted his head to the side and licked his lips.
"Freddie what are you doing?!" Grace screamed, taking a step backwards.
"Stop this right now, you're scaring me." Grace pleaded.
Mackenzie's hand slowly reached into her pocket to grab her phone, not taking her eyes from Freddie once.
"I'm scaring you?" Freddie chuckled.
Like a flash, he was standing in front of Grace, making Mackenzie gasp, almost dropping her phone. He tucked her soft dirty blonde hair behind her ear and smirked. "You don't even know the meaning of fear." Freddie chuckled.
Mackenzie's eyes darted from Grace to Freddie and back. Her mind became foggy and she couldn't think straight. Was Freddie really going to hurt them?
She clicked '9' into her keypad on her phone, then looked up as Freddie began to speak again, hiding her phone behind her leg.
"I do like you Grace, I really do but I just can't control myself!" Freddie said, with fear in his eyes which turned to hunger. "But I think I'll have a taste of you first." Freddie said as he lowered his mouth towards Graces neck.
"No!" Mackenzie screamed, pulling her bestfriend from Freddies grasp.
"Run!"
Mackenzie and Grace began running for the door, but Mackenzie was stopped by a force, pushing her to the ground. Freddies lanky body, stood over Mackenzie as she quivered in fear. She tried to scrambled to her feet, but her legs were too weak to pull herself from the ground.
"Freddie stop!" Grace cried as she continued to back away.
Freddie turned around to look at Grace, giving Mackenzie a chance to get up. Mackenzie began to run to the door again, only to get grabbed by Freddie once more. He grabbed her by the neck, staring deeply into her eyes, letting out a deep sigh as his teeth gritted together.
"Chasing you only makes this more fun for me." Freddie smirked, throwing Mackenzie to the ground once more.
Freddie quickly placed his hands on both Mackenzies shoulders and lowered his mouth towards her neck.
"Please don't hurt me Freddie." Mackenzie whimpered.
"I can't stop myself." He whispered.
She squeezed her eyes shut, waiting for the pain. Dying at the hands of one of her best friends was never a way which Mackenzie thought her life would end. But here she was, in her final moments, about to be murdered by her best friend.
Then suddenly, Freddie let out a cry in pain. Mackenzie opened her eyes to see Freddie pulling himself up from her body. A wooden arrow stuck out from his shoulder. He gripped the arrow, pulling it from his shoulder, tearing the flesh that had almost already healed again. He sucked in the air through gritted teeth as he threw the arrow to the ground, looking up at the man who shot it.
Mackenzie sat up from where she lay on the ground and looked behind her to see a man in his early twenties. He had light golden brown hair, quiffed back. He had a heart shaped face and had a prominent jawline. His eyes were marble grey and a stubble grew upon his chin. He wore a white t-shirt, black jeans and black boots.
Mackenzie's eyes then wandered down to the object that he was holding. In his hands, he held a black crossbow. She watched as he took a few steps towards the group of friends, taking turn to look at each person individually, then he looked down at the dead girls body, raising an eyebrow. He looked up at Freddie and smiled, making Mackenzie feel uncomfortable. Why was he smiling?
"I really did think you had potential Fred." The stranger sighed, loading his crossbow with another arrow.
Anger seeped from Freddies skin as the man continued to walk closer to him.
"You remember that animal that attacked you? That was actually me. I just made you forget about me and believe it was an animal." The man smirked as he looked down at Mackenzie who was still sat on the ground. "Because your just a new little vampire, I can still deceive you and that's also why you can still walk in the sunlight. Your haven't fully transitioned yet." He explained, looking up to the sunny sky, then glancing down at his watch. "I'd say you only have one more hour until your transition is complete. Then you'll go poof." The man said, making an exploding motion with his hand.
Mackenzie had no time to ask questions about what deception was or how this man was able to walk in the sunlight if he was a vampire too. All she wanted to do was get back inside the school where it was safe.
She began to shuffle backwards, slowly moving herself away from Freddie. As she carefully bent one leg to lift her body from the ground, Freddie turned his attention back to her. A low growl escaping his lips.
"Resist the urge! Fight it!" The man yelled at Freddie.
Freddie squeezed his hands into fists, then released it several times before walking towards Mackenzie. He approached her like a lion stalking its prey.
"Please help me!" Mackenzie cried, to the man.
"Freddie listen to me! You don't have to kill her, she's your friend." The man said to Freddie "Just drink from someone else instead." He light heartedly said.
Mackenzies eyes widened in horror. This man was encouraging Freddie to kill people!
"But Mackenzie smells so good." Freddie said sniffing the air. "I want her blood. I need it!" He growled, now towering over Mackenzie.
The man tilted his head to the left, then to the right, puckering his lips as if he were making a decision.
"I can't disagree with you there Freddo, but I also can't have you killing her either." He answered.
Freddie began to hover over Mackenzie's body, ignoring the mans statement. His mouth inched closer to Mackenzie's neck, making her scream in terror. Then a loud thud was heard, as Freddie's body fell limp on top of Mackenzie. She pushed his heavy body off from her and stood up to see her friend with an arrow through his back, penetrating his heart. She looked up at the stranger that still held the crossbow.
His closed lips turned to a smile and he let out a light snort as he looked at Freddie.
Mackenzie scrambled to her feet, stepping away from the stranger. Grace remained emotionless, not tearing her eyes away from Freddies body.
"Some people just weren't cut out for the job" He said, as if that were to reassure the girls that everything would be okay. He looked at Mackenzie, then shrugged his shoulders and beginning to walk away.
Grace tore her eyes from Freddie and looked up at the man as he turned his back on the girls. How could he do this and just leave?! He made Freddie what he was, so he could at least clean up the mess he made!
"So that's it!? Your just going to leave him here with no explanation" Grace yelled.
The man turned around to face Mackenzie and Grace, wiggling his finger at Grace.
"You know what little girl? You are so right." He said, walking straight for Grace "I completely forgot, silly me" He chuckled slipping his palm against his forehead. He was suddenly standing in front of Grace.
He placed a hand on Graces cheek, staring deeply into her eyes.
"You came out and found your friend dead. It must have been another animal attack." He softly said, smiling at his words.
"Another animal attack" Grace muttered after him.
She was in a trance state. Her eyes looked at his eyes and only his eyes. She didn't blink. She didn't move. She just looked into the strangers eyes.
He removed his hand from Graces cheek and turned to face Mackenzie. Grace still remained in her trance while Mackenzie backed away from the man as he walked towards her.
He quickly grabbed her shoulder to stop her from moving, tossing his crossbow to the ground and placing his other hand on her cheek too.
Mackenzie felt very uncomfortable as the man once again said "You came and found your friend dead. Must have been another animal attack."
Mackenzie quickly glanced away, as she grew more and more uncomfortable. The man removed his hand from Mackenzie's cheek and looked at her in shock.
"Did you just break eye contact with me?" The man asked in anger.
"I..uh..." Mackenzie stuttered.
He looked down at the necklace that Mackenzie's father gave her when she was 11. It was a small, pale blue rock attacked to a black material.
"Shit." He muttered, a hint of fear evident in his voice. "You listen here sweetie." he said, grabbing the collar of Mackenzie's denim jacket. You wont tell a soul what happened. And if you do, you'll end up like your good pal Freddie here." He threatened her, nodding towards Freddie.
The man grabbed his crossbow and walked towards Freddie, pulling the arrow from his back, then bit Freddies neck to make it look like an animal attack.
Mackenzie looked over at Grace then back to the man but he had vanished.
"OH MY WORD, FREDDIE!" Grace screamed.
Mackenzie watched her bestfriend run towards Freddies lifeless body and cradle him in her arms, as she hysterically cried.
"KENZIE GO GET A TEACHER! TELL THEM THAT THERES BEEN AN ANIMAL ATTACK" Grace ordered Mackenzie.
Mackenzie was so confused. How did that man make Grace forget everything that had happened. Is that what deception was? Mackenzie had seen in books and movies that Vampires could hypnotise their victims, but never did she think that they would really be able to do it. Heck, she didn't even think Vampires existed never mind their ability to wipe people's minds!
"Don't you remember what just happened?!" Mackenzie asked, trying to jog Graces mind.
Grace had to remember. She witnessed the whole thing!
"Of course i remember what happened! We just saw an animal kill Freddie!" Grace weeped into Freddies chest that was covered with blood.
"And the man?" Mackenzie asked.
"What are you talking about?! There was no man here. Look, theres no time for your silly delusions, go and get someone." Grace shouted, growing angry at Mackenzie.
A tear slid down Mackenzie's cheeks as she ran inside to get the first teacher she seen.
Mrs Whyte followed Mackenzie outside and gasped at the sight of the two bodies.
"Ill call an ambulance straight away." She said rushing back inside.
Another two 'animal attacks' hit Addington and oh how the civilians hoped that authorities could soon capture the creature. Little did they know, what they were looking for walked among them. These monsters looked just like you and me. They were impossible to identify and capturing them anytime soon was very unlikely.
Mackenzie leaned against the cement wall as another teacher rushed to her aid. She so badly wanted to tell the teachers what happened. She wanted that man locked up for what he had done to Freddie and everyone else, but she could never say a thing. She was sworn to secrecy. The last thing she wanted was an arrow to the heart, so she would keep her mouth shut, dealing with the unsettling truth alone.
*
Mackenzie looked around at all the unfamiliar faces. There were police cars, two ambulances and animal control. A car sped into the car park and Freddies parents jumped out of the car, they ran towards the stretcher that Mackenzie's father was pulling towards the ambulance.
She watched as Freddies mother spoke to her father, then Jason pulled the white sheet from Freddies face to reveal his pale skin.
Freddies mothers shaky hand rested on her cheek as she fell backwards into her husband.
"My precious boy!" She screamed as she fell to the ground as her legs gave in beneath her.
Her husband pulled her close to his chest and he cried with his wife, they were in unimaginable pain. Losing a child was something that no parent should ever have to go through and unfortunately for Freddies parents, they lost they're son to a tragic accident.
Mackenzie watched as her father pulled the cloth back over Freddie's face and loaded his body into the ambulance.
Mackenzie rested her head against the wall that she leaned against. She swallowed the lump in her throat and shut her eyes.
Her heart raced at the thought of having to lie to her father about the attack. After seeing what that man could do to Freddie and Grace, she didn't want him coming after her.
Then her mind began to replay the moment back in her head. Why was the man so moody about Mackenzie's necklace? Was it the reason for him being unable to hypnotise her, like he did with Grace?
